Strength:

Worked great for a while

Weakness:

Same as everybody else

I ordered this online 3 months ago. It was my first dvd player. I couldn't find any reviews, but similar JVC models were reviewed ok in Consumer Reports. It worked great, until a few days ago. The unit just locked up on the Terminator 2 disk on Saturday, and now no dvds will play.

I found this site on Sunday. Wish it would have been sooner. Now I have to try to return it or something. I just got a stack of dvds for Christmas. All I want to do is watch my movies. I guess I might have to buy another player.

I would also like any information on the class action law suit. JVC better not get away with selling this garbage.

This is ridiculous.

Awesome features, and compatability

This is more of a comment then a review.
The manual must be read "before" using and a EEPROM reset should be done, when taken out of the box. JVC has the procedure which can be printed. I went to their website.
I cannot give an honest review as most of what I am reading ignore the fact that a lens cleaning was not done. This procedure is common with all DVD players.
Also, the EEPROM rest procedure(from what I have read)was not done BEFORE the unit was ever used.
I have a JVC TV, and a tape deck; it is safe to say that no all makers of DVD players do not say everything needed.
Lastly, I see no posting of any lens cleaning done; any reason why not?
I am trying to present an objective appraisal here, not to criticize.

Strength:

Was a nice player for a year....until the warranty ran out.

Weakness:

Broke down after 1 year, player is now useless

Player worked well and had great picture and sound up until a month or so ago. The player then froze on the special feature section of Cider House Rules (Not exactly a complex disc) My wife and I chaulked it up to a Glitch with the disc. The next weekend, it happened again, this time acompanied by a loud squeeling sound when the player locked up. Well, here it is about a month later and the player can not go more that 5 Minutes without Locking or Pixalating. After reading posts here I tried the reset feature and it did nothing. It is now useless for movies, I have disconected this thing from the rest of my system (who knows what it can do to the rest of my set up if I leave it hooked up!) Here are the symptoms I experienced:

Picture Freeze (Plug Must be pulled to clear this as unit completely locks up)

Player displays "No Disc Message" after putting in Saving Private Ryan (a dis it has played in the past without error)

Disc Drawer will not close after disc inserted

Etc, Etc.

I did write to JVC on their web site to let them know of my disapointment, but from what I have read here, I do not expect to here from them at all.
I have purchased a SONY 560 to replace this unit, I hope I have better luck with that.
Synopsis: This player is obviously flawed and JVC offers no information about it on their site. That is all I need to know about this company, Bye Bye JVC

Strength:

There are no strenghts that you could not find on any DVD player

Weakness:

Reliabilty, quality and overall performance. If it is the last DVD player available, stick to video tapes.

This is the worst piece of electronic equipment I have ever purchased. Design issues aside, the remote is awful and the player is clunky. It has broken twice since we have owned it and JVC is no help at all. They direct you to places where you can get it fixed, they did not charge me for the part the first time however, I paid 75 in labor. The DVD player was 6 months old then and it was some optical thing that went. The man at the repair business said he has seen it many times on this model. I have contacted an attorney to see if a class action suit would be appropriate.

Strength:

Makes a good book end

Weakness:

Everything

Well I finally purchsed a new DVD player, so I thought I'd post another one star review to lower the rating on this player, which unfortunately is way too high. Interestingly enough, there really hasn't been a solid review of this player since it's initial ones.

I finally reached someone at JVC customer service and tried to explain my plight. She said she/they were aware of recent problems with the 501 and said it was because I tried to play the DVD dinasaur in it. She said that the laser in the 501 is "out of date" and I would need to take my player to be fixed, not under warrenty of course.

I hope JVC isn't going to blame the poor construction of their faulty player on the "changing technology of DVDs". Of note I found a closeout Sony DVD player from the same year that plays every disc my jvc had problems with flawlessly. I still feel like a ripped off consumer with little recompense.

I left a complaint with the BBB in new jersey. I encourage all to do the same as you can do it on the web.

Strength:

Beautiful picture, great sound, plays all my DVDs, plays CD-RWs, works great... when it is working.

Weakness:

Stopped working.

I posted a different review here in December 99 (See below)

My JVC worked fine from June 1999 until March 2001 (1 year, 9 months) when it started pixelizing and locking up after about 3 hours of use. Now it starts garbling the picture about 20 minutes in, and can't even play audio CDs. Lens cleanings and leaving the cover off didn't help. I even tried the "adjust the laser screw" technique described here.

I bought an Onkyo DV-S525 to replace this out-of-warranty player.

Strength:

Looked cute, had cute knobby things
was one of first players with DTS

Weakness:

Died completely 3/01 (2 years after purchase)
from the start, I'd have to power off to reset occasionally
Joystick a bit finicky
select button did not always work.
Some special features unplayable.

I wanted to add my name to the long list. The weaknesses I listed say it all. At least I know I'm not going crazy and know to forget about trying to get it repaired. And to think I cancelled my Netflix membership because I thought it was their discs! I just sent them an apology/notification email.

I would not recommend this unit even if free, except to my worst enemies, not even my mother-in-law.

I just placed a review a few days ago, and still have had problems with more DVD's not being read by my XV-501. I had checked the JVC service web site before, but missed the right area. Today, I happened to check it again before calling JVC Service, and found their FAQ area which includes EEPROM RESET procedures for all JVC DVD players. It simply involves unplugging the unit, pressing "On Screen" and "Title" keys, then "Enter". Turn the unit OFF, then back ON and it's reset. I tried this with my unit, and now it is playing "bad" discs! For more information on the 501, 511, 701, 1000, and 2000 players, go to this web page: http://www.jvcservice.com/custrel/DVDfaq.htm.
It may not solve some of the particular problems I have read below, but it should help those of us who have been happy with the unit only to find it suddenly not working any longer.

4 Stars for having the information available online. (5-stars if we did not need it!)
