Strength:

Very Easy to make Multi-Region , Picture Quality and Sound.

Weakness:

Does not play CD-R, No audio button on remote.

I have a JVC XV515 DVD player, this is exactly the same as the XV 511 model only gold in colour(Although not the US model which I believe has Component outputs). I purchased this model in early December and it has a serial number begining with 154kxxxx...

I purposefully went out and bought or rented the problem disks mentioned in this forum or other similar websites(DVD times). I had no problems with any of the disks, from Matrix to Armageddon. What seems strange to me is the differing accounts people are giving using the same model. I have come to the conclusion that the performance of the machine must depend on period bought (older/newer generation machine) or the DVD disc themselves being so varied in format.

The review of the machine itself in my accounts. Excellent low budget machine, good sound, good picture, good features and excellent multi region capabilities. Top stuff JVC, keep up the good work with your next models soon to be introduced on the market.

Cruel Intentions did not work on the 501 model and also this one. The Matrix had 3 scene skips. Menu select option is slow. Decent SFX for this low budget player.

I bought this player at the Circuit City for $299.
The biggest complaint I have about this unit (and the reason I returned it) is that after playing a few movies on it I noticed that the video sometimes freezes for a few seconds when going from on chapter to the next. This happened with many different movies and at different times, Alien 3, Enemy of the State, Twelve Monkeys (DTS). Once it even dropped the sound for a second.

It only has analoge stereo and an optical outputs (no coax), but DD and DTS playback worked great (I hooked it up to an Onkyo TX-DS575 reciever and it had no problems with either DD or DTS DVD's and apart from the problems below CD's played fine).

This unit plays back CD's but it does so poorly. Many CD's that playback fine on my Philips CD player skip or even hang while playing back on this unit.

The picture quality is ok, it looks fine during the movie, but subtitles and text are sometimes shaking a bit.

Fast forward and slow motion playback are kind of jerky (it seems to only play the keyframes at fast forward speeds). The Sony DVP-650D (which I only saw in a store) seemed to do this much nicer.

The on screen display feature is really cool (the movie keeps playing scaled down while you change settings). However it akward that you have to switch to the OSD to change audio tracks.

Overall I rate this player 3 stars. If you don't care about playback of CD's and you don't mind the picture freezing now and then the player is not a bad buy for $299.

I bought this unit fro Ubid at a good price and so far it has been worth it. Setup was easy except no coaxil ,optical only which was kind of a hassle. So far it has plyed well. There has been some freezes for a second or two in the matrix but there was a problem with the matrix anyway. The mummy froze for a second only once but played without a hiccup the rest of the movie. Othe DVDs it has played without a problem so I am very happy wioth this product so far and was a good budget buy.

Strength:

Great Buy for the buck. Excellent picture.

Weakness:

None

I did plenty research before I decided on making the purchase, and I must say it was a great one. Bought it for $289.00 from PC RICHARD AND SON and it was worth every penny. Some reviews I saw on this DVD player stated that it froze on certain scenes. I've had it for over 6 months now and it has never happened to me. I highly recommend this DVD player to anyone that does not want to spend too much money on a first DVD player. The picture quality is simply amazing. SHARP, SHARP, SHARP. Some reviews also stated that the remote was a waekness. Not true. It is small, but everything you need is right there. To me, it is a perfect, solid remote. I am very happy with my purchase.

Strength:

Good bang for the buck, decent performance.

Weakness:

Setup instructions for 5.1 sound sparse.

After going crazy researching the web on DVD players and finding nearly all of the entry level players to have some glitches, I decided on the JVC. So far I am impressed with the feature set, and the audio and video performance seem fine. I have run into a couple movies in which the picture will freeze for a fraction of a second (not layer switching....), but the same scene would not reproduce the symptom...very minor but noted. JVC's response was in the lack of solid standards in DVD authoring. I have noted some Moire patterns on certain scenes, but will have to do more research on which scenes to use for comparisons. $499 CDN with no freebies ofetn thrown to our Good American friends......overall recommended.

Strength:

Component out.

Weakness:

Skips, menus may be slow.

I got this player about 1 year ago as a refurbished model. It provides a nice picture on my 27" JVC TV, but does occasionally skip on DVDs. The skipping happens on brand new DVDs; I'm guessing that the problem is the player.
I've also had hesitiation problems with the menus on the Matrix, as others have mentioned.
Overall, I'd shy away from this model. The Toshiba SD1600 is a nice machine. I purchased this for my father and am thinking about getting one for myself. I may hold out for a PS2 or X-box, though.

Strength:

Features,reliability,value,picture quality.

Weakness:

No digital coaxial output.

Have had the player for 6 weeks, never had a skip or any of the problems I have heard of from other reviews. I have played approximatly 50 different movies on it without a hitch. For the money I could not think of a better player. Anyone kicking around the idea of getting a dts reciever I highly recommend it. This player with a Dolby Digital, DTS reciever make a great start to a home theater system.

Strength:

Price, optical output, solid transport, JVC reputation

Weakness:

Doens't read CD-R, CD-RW

I purchased this unit after getting an AC-3 compatible reciever. I needed a digital input for both movies and music.

I got it from ebay for $160 + SH.

I have had only 2 "lock-ups" since purchasing it. It performs quite well with nwer CDs, but can be finicky with loder, heavily scraped CDs. I have to still use my older JVC CD player to play scratched CDs...this is common for entry level DVD players because of the different wavelength laser they use to read multi-layer DVDs.

Over all, this thing was a steal. I am not ready to upgrade. I like to ditigal output (uses Toshilink cable) for all audio. I am a hardcore JVC fan and even though this is an entry level DVD player, it's still worth it. Great bang for the buck!
