Strength:

Good basic player.

Weakness:

Remote is a little weak and hard to use

My dog Gizmo likes to curl up on the couch and watch TV between my wife and I, and he is much happier now that we have this player.

This guy is a solid performer, not a barnburner, but definitely a big piece of our couch potato, movie watching lives. Easy to use, except for some of the functions hidden behind two or three buttons on the remote control.

Strength:

Ease of use and set-up

Weakness:

Some delays using the menu settings with The Matrix.

I have used this unit for over a month now and I'm very impressed with it. I haven't had any problem playing any DVD. The only problem I have had was using the menu settings when playing The Matrix. When I would press the up or down arrows the display highlight would skip. ( It would move up or down 2 places instead of 1 ) Picture quality was great compared to my Sony DSS.

This is a definite Recomend for a first DVD Player.

Next purchase will either be a Denon 3300 or Onkyo 777 so I can hear what I'm missing.

Strength:

Value; color output; good remote; quiet transport; CompuLink feature

Weakness:

Lack of coaxial digital output; manual is complete, but confusing in some areas

I am very pleased with the performance of the JVC. It has worked flawlessly. One of the first DVDs I watched was The Matrix. Although it was a little slow reading the menu, it worked perfectly. I have watched 10 or 11 different movies in less than a month, and watched all or parts of The Matrix many times (the lobby scene is incredible, as is the helicopter crash). SPR was also fantastic. The only hesitation I have experienced was on The Thin Red Line and I suspect it was during a layer switch (it's almost a 3 hour movie).

The video output and color saturation are very good. I have not noticed any artifacts. The color is much livlier than other comparable players. It won't pass PLUGE on the VE disk, but I still was able to set up my TV brightness correctly.

The lack of a coaxial digital output may be a problem for some people.

Setup was easy, although the manual is a little confusing as to which setting to use for the digital output and on how the 3-D Phonic feature works. The remote is very well thought out, although I wish it had an audio track selection button. You have to access the menu to change the audio track. Audio CDs play well and sound better than when played on my thirteen year old Magnavox CD player.

The CompuLink feature is nice because it automatically turns on and changes the video input on my JVC TV. (My wife hates having to turn on and change settings on different audio/video devices).

I picked this up at Onsale/Egghead for $191. A great value, considering Circuit City has it on sale right now for $279. Overall, a great value and a decent, entry level DVD player.

Strength:

Great picture quality, great sound (even with built-in DAC), good compatibility, a lot of features for the price

Weakness:

Only Optical Out

This player is GREAT. After four months of use I am very pleased with it. I use it with an Harman Kardon AVR100 receiver avec five cerwin vega speakers. The sound is great! The picture is also top notch!

Yes i got a couple of bugs with it (menu not controllable, etc...) but an unplug of the unit solved it 100% of the time. Did not have to do the reset thing...

But NO SKIPPING in sound... It never happened to me! And i played a lot of movies with it !!!

For the price, it's a perfect DVD player! Buy it and you would be pleased!

Strength:

Loaded with features

Weakness:

Skips 4 or 5 times every DVD, growing number of problem discs

My wife got me this player for Christmas & I was thrilled. It wasn't long though before I started noticing the problem mentioned here already of the scene freezing for a half sec or so & the sound keeps playing. This happens 4 or 5 times a disc (even new ones). I've also been reading of lot's of problem discs on Usenet. The only one I encountered was Arlington Rd. The place that sold it too her screwed up & gave a 501 remote, manual & registration card with the 511 (it was a shelf unit), so with all things combined, I returned it. A shame because I did like the features, just seems to be getting an unreliable reputation. I now have a Panasonic A320 on order.

Strength:

Lots of features for low dollars

Weakness:

Many issues with DVD's not playing

Since I have purchased this player approximately 6 DVD's have failed to play. Each and everyone has failed during the initial reading. "To cancel out press the 'Open' button then wait, it takes about 15 seconds." By waiting you don't have to unplug and reset the player.

A couple of the movies that I can remember problems with are the newest 007 and The Beach.

Other then the DVD's not playing I love the player, the component outputs are awesome. And compu-link makes everything work amazingly well together.

Strength:

Sounded and looked awesome for 10 days.

Weakness:

Conked out on day 11

I blame myself for being a cheapskate and getting this refurbished off UBID.com. After perfect performance for 10 days (watched probably 8 movies), one night it began freezing up at the opening credits. I thought it was just the disc, but the same thing happened with every one. I took it to my local JVC authorized service center. FIVE WEEKS later (today), I picked it up, and the guy said that it had been worked on before when it was refurbished, and it was a mess inside with lots of sloppy soldering. He said they couldn't fix it and I would have to take it to the regional JVC repair center. After five weeks of hassle, I'm just going to throw it in the garbage and write it off as a learning experience. I've had a JVC vcr that has been awesome for about 6 years, but this product (at least in its refurbished form), was about my worst experience with consumer electronics.
