Strength:

Good Value for the price, nice looking gold case. Good name brand, my '85 JVC radio/amp/EQ still runs like new and I expect this to be the same.

Weakness:

Occasionally skips/gets hung up. After just reading some recommendations the disks be cleaned before playing possibly this will correct it? Does not seem to happen that often.

5 Stars for value because of fairly low price for options, only 4 stars for quality (may be 5 if cleaning disks improves things).

Strength:

format compatibility, styling, ease of use

Weakness:

menu(just because i liked the previous JVC menus though)

I selected this unit because of price and ability to play multiple cd formats. This is being used as my main cd player and dvd player in my bedroom system. It functions easily and displays a very good picture, getting the full resolution once setup properly. I will say I prefer Toshiba and panasonic to this unit, but they couldnt do the different cds. But I do like this one better than the pioneer, as I never liked the menu system of pioneer players. The remote is typical JVC, fairly easy to use and it can work my TV(if i didnt use a learning remote that is). The jog dial is a nice feature and it is all very easy to use for my girlfriend, who like the gold finish. I got it for a real good price too.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound, classy look

Weakness:

No Jog Shuttle on Remote

I had this player for about 6 months, and so far it did not give me any problems. I paid $199.00 delivered from Camera World of Oregon, I think that was a good deal. It has an excellent picture and sound. I only use it for DVD discs, so I can't say how good it is for other formats. My only complaint is that I wish it had a Jog/Shuttle wheel on the remote.

Strength:

Super quality sound(DD/DTS) and picture. Plays VCD, DVD, CD, CD-R, and CD-RW. Low price/high quality. havn't run into a single prob yet

Weakness:

remote does not have jog shuttle

I just got this last week for $180(including shipping) from UBid. I thought that I would have to pay at least $300 to get a DVD player with these features - good picture, good sound(when DD/DTS digital output hook to AV receiver with decoder). I have been looking at some Sony models, but form the reviews that I have read here I thought that I would give the JVC XV-523GD a shot. I still can't beleive I got this for under $200. It has not disappointed so far; I love this unit. It handled the Matrix without a single glicth. I think that this is a steal at under $200.

Strength:

Price, looks, works as advertised

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet

Just bought this puppy yesterday after pouring over the DVD reviews here. First disc "The matrix" played great no problems. Have it connected via S-video to a Pioneer RPTV, and the picture looks better than my Dish network DBS (barely). I have the JVC Disk Network DBS and a high end JVC SVHS player which have performed flawlessly und heavy use. Looks like another JVC winner. As far as setup (as with anything) just remember to RTFM.

Strength:

Nice quality picture, works well with JVC tv compulink

Weakness:

Freezes up

Bought one, had continual 1 second video freeze ups during play, especially after 1 1/2 hours into a movie. This was quite annoying as we couldn't determine if it was the player or the DVD itself. It didn't seem to freeze up at the same places in the movies (Mission to Mars, Final Destination), but usually towards the end.
I had the player for less than 30 days, so took it back to the store and exchanged it for the same model. IT DID THE SAME THING during the first day of play. Took that one back as well and gave up on JVC, bought a Sony DVP-S360 for about the same price. It plays flawlessly, with just a tad of lesser video quality.
It's a shame, I was a big fan of JVC equipment, but apparently the DVD players were not a fan of me. A big thanks to stores like Circuit City and their generous return policy within 30 days. I had read beforehand of a similar JVC DVD player with similar problems, but thought I was immune with this model.

Strength:

plays variety of formats very well

Weakness:

ease of remote

I think it works great for the price, especially considering it plays all kinds of VCD, as well as DVD, I have not tried CD-R/RW yet...remote does not seem to entirely shut off TV, only power to TV, and cannot program TV channels into remote. Has several audio settings, and theatre, dont know if this is standard on other DVD players, or not...

Strength:

plays audio, VCDs, XVCDs and hi-rez (640x480) XVCDs burned on any cd-r/rw media. very useful digest feature for X/VCDs with multiple audio/video clips.

Weakness:

picky about smudges on dvds.

won this unexpectedly on ebay for $176, shipped, but more than pleased with the features and its appearance. it's a lot less tolerant of smudges on dvds than my toshiba players, but nothing a good cleaning has not resolved. did seem to take a little longer to load some DTS titles. there are a lot of refurbished ones for sale on the 'net. we'll see how it holds up after a year...

Strength:

Easy to use, looks good, logical remote

Weakness:

Remote commands not learnable by many receivers

I really like this unit, but I've been frustrated trying to get receivers to learn the remote commands. I had a Kenwood VR3090 that learned all my components except for the 523GD. Then I recently purchased an Onkyo 575X and it also learned all my components except for the JVC 523GD. Anyone else have similar problems? I did have success with a borrowed remote from a Denon 3300, so I know it's not impossible to learn the remote codes.
