Strength:

Good when it plays

Weakness:

Unable to detect disc

My DVD player no longer recognizes the disc. I suspect the fault lies in the Circuit Board. Has anyone tried replacing the Circuit Board ? If so, have any idea where I can procure the internal circuit board ?

Strength:

It plays?

Weakness:

Whenever there is an on screen explosion or loud noise or bright flash of light the picture rolls or jumps. The sound cuts out when there are scene changes or main menue selections are made.It doesn't play burnt cd's.

Having experianced the biggest pain in the a** because of jvc's inferior product,i had to submit something to warn every consumer i could about this particular model.I bought the JVC 720 in the late winter of 2001 and couldn't wait to get it home and experiance the wonder of progressive scan and dvd audio. This exitement was quickly replaced by confusion and then stress as i fiddled around with the machine and my 10.000$ tv to find out why the picture would roll and flicker every time there was an explotion, bright light or loud noise on a dvd.I turned down the sound...nothing...i took the machine over to a friends house and the problem persisted. So off i go back to future shop a week later after i aranged a ride and got another one and low and behold the same problem. This time i had to wait 3 weeks before i could get a ride,i'm visually impared you see so i have to rely on friends to drive me.So i get there and find out a month has past and the return policy is invalid. So i have to fork over cash for a new machine in order to be able to return the old one and get my money back. But when i get the new one home it has the same defect,so now i have two defective machines.PLEASE do not take the chance on any of the dvd players in this line if you know what is good for you!

Strength:

The look of the machine. The reliability. The great picture. It plays well.

Weakness:

Won't play CD-Rs. Not much else.

Lets get one thing straight: I HAVE HAD THIS DVD PLAYER FOR 2 YEARS 4 MONTHS AND HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS! Those who have used their dvd players for a shorter period of time and have complained of reliablity issues or either unlucky or they abuse their machines. I first reviewed my player on 8/13/99 and said it was a great machine, and now, almost 3 years later, I stand by my comments. I have been very satisfied with my purchase and have had no problems with it. I use it an average of 5 times a week. When you add it up, I have used the player more than 600 times with no "freezeups" or "flickers" or whatever else other reviewers say happens with all the JVC players. If the price is right for you, and you don't abuse your equipment, you should seriously consider getting this model, if it's still being made.

Strength:

So far, everything, except...

Weakness:

Certain DVD's will NOT play unless you reset the player

I really have not had that many problems with this unit, but finding this web page and reading all the reviews on this unit has scared the bejeezes out of me! The only two real problems I've had is on a good number of DVD's, about 2/3 the way through the movie, it hiccups one time for about 1-2 seconds in the middle of the film...not that big of a deal. The one main problem that really gripes me is that it won't play some DVD's unless I reset the unit. And even THEN it still doesn't play sometimes. The two main titles I've had this problem with is "Men of Honor" and "Star Wars: Episode I"....(GRRRRRR!!! >:( ). Other than that, I have really been pleased. I know this is a review page and not a forum, but if anyone knows how to permanently solve the problem of certain DVD's playing, I would appreciate it.

P.S. - Buying a new DVD player is NOT considered a solution...at least not yet....hehehe ;)

Strength:

Zoom feature

Weakness:

No power on/off, only 'standby' mode, therefore unable to fully shut off when not in use.
No backlit remote.

I wish I had heard about this web site sooner. I purchased my new reciever and speaker system this week largly based on the input of this web site.
Just out of curiousity, I checked to see what people thought of the audio equimpment I ALREADY HAVE to see if my opinion coincided with the general concensus.
In this case it does. I would have never bought this DVD player had I read this review section. It is all true. This product is unreliable and you are on your own with service and repair. Until two days ago, I have been using Pro Logic, therefore I have not used the DVD player all that often. I use it for CD playing more so because of the clearer output.
The room it is set up in has normal temperature settings, (i.e., low humidity). When I do rent DVDs, I am a fanatic with cleaning the discs before it goes into my player. We have no children to tamper with it when we are not around. And yet, after one year after purchase, it completely shut down and would not operate. JVC was completely unhelpful when I finally did get a hold of a human, and P.C. Richard barely honored the warrantty. (Coincedently, the player died on the last day of warrantty). It cost me $100 and 10 days with a gaping hole in my entertainment system to get it back. It still skips a great deal (with several different DVDs) during play, but not as much.
I have seen much better players for less money, and have not heard of problems with anyone I know who owns a DVD player.
I guess this is a disadvantage of being the first one on the block to get a DVD player.

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!!!!!!

P.S. nowadays, with most people buying components for a HT system, there is no reason not to manufacture a backlit remote.
All non-illuminated remotes should be banished to the same room where they keep Betamax video players.

Strength:

Used to be top of the line (for the price)

Weakness:

Now its a piece of sh__!

When I bought it it was a pretty good offering. Always had weird problems, however, like not being able to play certain movies.
Now the power can only be turned off from the remote (or by yanking cord), it freezes constantly and requires hard boot. It plays many movies but freezes on others. Every once in a while I put in a movie and it can't figure the resolution out. Audio settings are a pain in the a__ to configure. Basically, it sucks. Don't get one...ever....unless you want mine for $50 OBO, then Email me, lol!

I've owned this unit for just under 2 months. I have had a really good time with this unit for the most part. The images are beautiful and it's rare to see any visual artifacts at all. The only reason I can even notice the minor artifacts is that I'm so spoiled by how good it all looks. The menus are logical and allow for enough customization. They aren't the easiest thing to set up, but I don't intend on really changing them much, once they're set. I got a great deal on it at www.netmarket.com - $399.
The remote is marginal, with the 'enter' function being rather unresponsive - sometimes to the degree that I have to use the front panel controls to get through a menu. I haven't really been able to test out the DD or DTS features yet - still pining after the Yamaha RX-D995 receiver. (It will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine.) But even Pro-logic sound is solid.

But, (and this is a HUGE but) IT BROKE. *sigh* Yes, it broke. I started getting a really funky pausing/huge chunking effect before the player coughed, spit and died. It first happened half-way through a movie, so I thought it was the disc. Oh, how I wish it was. Many discs later, the player refused to even play the intro FBI warning. So, now, I'm sad, alone, and waiting for it to get fixed. The only upside to this is that it's within 90 days of purchase so both parts and labor are still covered (silly me, I didn't but the extended warranty since it would have had to remain a Netmarket member at $70/year).

Because it broke so early in our relationship, I have to give it a 2.5 out of 5 stars (even though I can only list 3 stars here.)

This player works well except for the ENTER button on the remote as noted in previous comments. DVD/DD video and audio are excellent-the hookups are via an s-video line to my TV and 5.1 audio to a Denon AVR75. There are no lip-synch problems as is characteristic of some of the other brands. The down side is that the 701 only passes DTS signals without decoding so I had to buy the Technics AD500 decoder (list-$300; eBay-225). The connection between the 701 and the 500 is via an optical cable supplied with the 500 by Technics. The DTS Demo disc #3 plays well with no audio dropouts. These dropouts have been described for both the JVC 701 and 501 models, but the folks who report them don't provide enough detail to isolate the problem(s). Clearly, I haven't tested all DTS movies. But my setup seems fine...now if only my wife wouldn't complain about being in the movie.....

Just wanted to comment on the JVC-501. I purchased this unit from u-bid for $269! The first two weeks I used this dvd player it performed awsome. BUT... shortly after purchasing the unit I began to have problems. Thirty minutes into a movie the disc began scrambling and completely froze up. Thinking it may be the disc I replaced it with another one. The dvd player wouldn't acknowlede there was a disc in it. It just said "no disc". I couldn't believe the damn thing broke after approximately watching 10 movies. I figured it had been knocked out of alignment so I took it into a local audio store instead of sending it off to JVC to get it looked at. They said the alignment was fine and they were not sure what the problem was. Has anyone else had this problem? Im giving it 3 speakers. It was excellent while it worked but it makes me mad to have to send it to JVC and wait 6 weeks to enjoy it again. If it wasn't for the problem I had I would have given it 5 speakers...for $269 its like a sore peker...you just cant beat it.
