Strength:
Audio and video performance. 7 disk changer with the abillity to change disks while one remains playing, that is an awsome feature, wouldn't be able to live with out it. Tons of features and out puts.
Weakness:
Build quality and reliability, slow disk change time, noisy when changing. At the time of purchase I could not find another progressive scan DVD player anywhere in my town, (Columbus, Oh). Crutchfield had Denon listed in their catalog, but didn't have any in stock. So I bought this one until something else came out. But so far I have not found any reason to replace it. The performance is top notch as far as I can tell. I have it hooked up to a Mitsubishi 65" wide screen HDTV with Ixos Gold Series component video cables ($300), I was using cheaper cables at first (AR) and noticed a huge difference with these, those 65 inches will reveal a lot of flaws. The audio performance is impressive also. I am using a Legacy pre/pro, 6 Soundstream DA-2 amps, and Def-Tec speakers, and all Ixos cables and wiring. The JVC is the cheapest / weakest link in the chain, and so far has no problems keeping up. However, I have had several glitches that show up from time to time. Like no sound, or no video, but turning the unit off and back on usually snaps it back. Did have a disc get stuck and had to take the top off to remove it. I doubt you can beat this product for the price. Similar Products Used: Sony, Denon |

Audio, video quality
Weakness:
Terrible usability design. First, the good points: the audio and video qualities of this player are outstanding. Wonderful, full, clear, deep sound on my system with B&W 801 III speakers. DVD video quality is among the best that I've seen. And while I really wanted to like this player, there were too many usability problems that I couldn't live with and sent it back. To begin, the front of unit has a very prominent blinking orange LED to indicate which of the 7 discs is playing. I could not find a way to defeat this. This is unacceptable on a video product (which is often placed adjacent to the TV). Arggghh.. The display showing elapsed time was very dim and impossible to see from a distance. As far as I could tell, the only time it would offer is the elapsed time of the track: no option to see remaining time, or total time of the disc. Many of the features (like random play) require several selections on the TV screen (arrggghgh). Not even a dedicated button for random. No disc memory feature. So once you decide that you want to finish watching the DVD another time, you need to write down it's time and search for it manually the next time - unacceptable. Oh well JVC, try again... Good audio video quality

JVC! Great Product! Buyer Beware! I bought this because I wanted progressive scan with DVD-Audio ( Don't ask about DVD-Audio at Circuit City, they think it is Dolby Digital! ) and I got it. Problem is that this unit broke after 3 months of use. I returned it and had the local JVC authorized repaor guy take 2 months tring to fix it. He could not diagnos the problem and everything that he got from JVC seemed to be defective. Finally the unit went to JVC Service in Jersey. By this time I had been without it for 3 months. No one ever contacted me and when I contacted them they treated me like I was a pain in the ass. I complianed to the Better Business Bureau and I got the deck back in two days. JVC did not make me feel comfortable with them and they did not seem to care. I will not buy another JVC product. Also the deck makes funny grinding sounds now when it opens and closes. The audio video quality is good if you are willing to take a chance. Similar Products Used: Sony DVP-C650 |

Strength:
7 discs, easy to operate, good picture and sound, so far relyable
Weakness:
When connecting with component video connection the color seems to be out of balance - too much green?! Over all a good and solid player. Wanted to have a dvd player but as I do not have enogh space to waste in my rack and do not intend to start running around video rentals (have three small children who take almost all the time anyway), I''ll mostly use it for music and only occasionally for dvds. So that''s the reason I wanted it to be a replacement for my cd player and have five disc capability (and it has seven). Unfortunately my JVC receiver remote does not change the discs on this player. So the only reason in the whole system I have to use a second remote is to change between discs. That''s a bit of an annoyance. Picture and sound are excellent but for one detail - when connecting with component video connection the picture is very different from composite video or S-video connections (color seems to be out of balance and much too green). I know that component video is supposed to be the best possible connection but in my case it seems to me that the other connections actually give a more realistic palette of color. Anyone ever seen or heard a similar problem? |

Weakness:
None Unbelievable dvd player for the price. I have used the player on both a regular tv and on my new big screen hdtv. To really appreciate the value of this dvd player you must have an hdtv. The progressive scan feature (which can only be used with hdtv) provides a distinct picture quality increase. The clarity and sharpness really takes dvd quality to a new level. This player retailed for $500 but you should be able to find it on the internet for around $300 shipped. I have viewed players twice and three three times as expensive and they simply won''t out perform this player. One note, before spending $300 or more on a dvd player like this make sure you plan to use all the features. If you simply want to play dvds on your present standard tv and tv speakers save a couple hundred bucks and get a cheaper player (you won''t notice any differnce without more expensive components). If you have a home theater receiver, separate speakers and have or plan to upgrade to hdtv you will notice a big difference compared to a cheap player. This is the best value you will find! Weakness:
weak plastic feet (radiohead anyone), pretty much unshippable If you are looking at the IL 60''s, you probably already checked them out, sound, visual and otherwise. But you''re wanting someone to tell you if you should buy them, if its really worth the money. It is. For the price of these, you owe it to yourself to get a pair. You will be dumbfounded by the bass. The non-sub frequencies are also as clear, transparent, and slightly warm as anyone could want. The styling is absolutely beautiful, though I was a bit surprised that they are not hard wood, but rather high density particleboard. Some will claim this deters from the overall quality, however, I make the case that these structures are very rigid, of high quality and will not dissapoint you. Any heavier, and you literally would need two people to move them around. I haven''t owned them long enough to mess with the RABOS, but they don''t even need it, at least in my apt. (poor nieghbors ! ! !). The CMMD cones are flawless, as handsome as they are functional. There are a lot of setups available, depending on your needs. Check out infinity systems.com. You can print a .pdf of the instruction manual for these monsters. As with anything, perfection is as elusive as an ice cube in an oven. In other words, my experience thus far has not been without fault. The right speaker was damaged during shipping; one of those cumbersome feet broke off. They were insured however, so it should be no problem to get it replaced. But a word to the wise, DO NOT have these shipped. If there is any way you can avoid this, DO IT. Its not worth the inherrant risk afforded by a company that delivers millions of packages a day. It would have been cheaper to drive to Memphis, their originating warehouse. Anyway, good luck and happy listening. Similar Products Used: American Acoustics Laboratory 4-ways |

quality, reliability If you want a DVD player, don''t buy one of these. Mine broke after several days. The laser head is flimsy and the mechanics is cheap plastics. Now after 2 months it is still at the repair facility and there seems to be no chance to have it back soon. The repair people told me that every part they received from JVC was broken in one way or another. I complained to JVC several times, but they did nothing. In fact their managers are never "in their office". Some secretary always answers, takes a message, but they never return the call. |

Seven Discs, DVD-A, Gold Plated contacts, On screen Menu. Price
Weakness:
Noise from changing mechanism. Holy Cow!!! JVC has a winner. Excellent Styling, All gold plated contacts, multiple format capability including DVD-A. So far has performed flawlessly. Owners'' manual is excellent and well written. Although the remote is not backlit the layout is well done and the on-screen menus are simple. The soundstaging in the DVD-A format is superb and it included two DVD-A discs one disc a compilation of classical and rock music the other disc were selections from two of the British group YES. Video imaging is very good. I am only using S-video into a Sony Trinitron and found the colors and image to be flawless. The seven disc carousel is an unusual set-up and somewhat noisy but so far has worked exceptionally well Similar Products Used: Pioneer 603 DVD changer (sucks). |

Picture Quality Progressive with .mp3, CD-R/W, DVD-A Built in DD/DTS Decoders PRICE
Weakness:
Mostly controlled by remote Size (may not fit some av racks) Questionable reliability with changer mechanism Pluses: This unit FAR exceeded my expectations with looks and features. It is really a site to see the carousel in this thing work (also makes me wonder how durable it is). It fits 7 discs in the space most DVD players fit 5. To do this, it does not "angle" the discs as some do, it uses a bi-level tray (can''t explain, just look at it and you''ll see). The DD/DTS out was mandatory, as my Yamaha receiver was only 6 channel ready with no built-in decoders. The user interface for controlling the settings is very well set up and easy to understand. Picture quality is amazing using the composite outs and using a non-HDTV. It has a clean front with only the buttons you need (bad if you lose the remote, however), and the display is very comprehensive, showing all info about the movie. There are some neat features as well, like up to 1024X zoom on any part of the screen, the DVD-Audio capabilities, MP3 playback, CD-R/W capabilities. Again, sitting in my cabinet with the Yamaha Receiver, and now with my new Onkyo 797, it looks right on par with quality and design.Negatives: Remote needed to do most anything, and it is not as functionally laid out as some other units. Again, not a big negative for me as I like the clean look of the front of the player without all the rarely used buttons. The 7 disc changer, while great for hours of uninterrupted cd play (days if they are 7 .mp3 discs), is noisy and with its design, remains to be seen if reliability is a factor.Overall, I am very happy with the unit. Nothing I have put to it yet has caused it to miss a beat. It really is a great price for so many features (54 mhz DAC vs 27 mhz, DVD-Audio, Dolby Digital and DTS built-in, changer, progressive). As for my concerns on reliability, only time will tell. Fom all my research, however, it appears that JVC does two things well, camcorders and DVD''s. Going on five months now, and this player has yet to pull one of those “what the he**” moments. If this keeps up, you’ve got the hands-down winner in form, function, and price. Way to go JVC! Progressive scan, multi-disc changer, DVD-Audio, MP3.
Weakness:
Low noisy when changing discs. The JVC XV-FA90BK was the one I chose. I have had a DVD player since they first came out and this JVC DVD player has the best video I have seen. The picture is rich and very detailed, with no artifacts or jagged lines. It''s almost like looking at a photograph. I have the 5.1 channel outputs connected to my Yamaha AV Receiver. I played a DVD-Audio disc and was very impressed with the sound. The other features. I have had this player for 1 month and have not experienced any problems with it. It has not froze the picture or skipped like my other players. I strongly recommend this player for anyone who is looking for a quality DVD player with DVD-Audio and progressive scan. Plus the price is very reasonable. Until HD-DVD appears, this the closest that you can get to a perfect picture. Similar Products Used: Toshiba SD-3755 |
