I have read some of the reviews on this page and I don't understand what the big problem about this player not playing CD'r and CDrw because if you get a CD recorder and make your own CD the sound quality will actually be better than on the DVD player. Also it is impossible to compare a more expensive DVD player and come out with the same result.

ALSO FOR ALL OF YOU AUDIOPHILES OUT THERE that are paying big prices for brand name speakers you should try the Axiom M3Ti it is rated at 175 watts 93db and it is $275.00 and if you would like to read the awesome reviews it got from the professionals not "salesman" go to soundstage.com. It should be three times the price and it is made by a little company in Canada that has been around for 20 years. By the way it will eat the paridigm titan and spit your money that you pissd away back into your hands.Don't listen to the salesman who says more money means better and think and listen for yourself.

Strength:

3 disc and many digial options

Weakness:

no cdr or cdrw.

Works nicely, nothing to compare to since it is my first DVD player. However, some people have complained that it freezes after pausing. For me, it only has frozen when I pause it in DTS Digital. Recently bought a Reciever so I couldn't experience digital till now. Otherwise this unit works supremely.

Strength:

Price. 3 trays.

Weakness:

won't play some DVD's. Poor customer support

As time goes on with this player, it is developing more and more quirks with the trays jamming, the DVD locking up and especially playing fewer and fewer DVD's. JVC blames this on the need to take it to a repair shop to upgrade the software. What doesn't make sense with that is I have a DVD player in my PC which is just as old and it continues to work fine with absolutely no difficulties. If software is going out of date, wouldn't it affect all DVD players?
I have repeatedly cleaned the DVD player and have done the reset procedure described on JVC's website with little to no improvement. Customer support is non-existent and JVC does not stand behind it's products. I will get a new DVD player soon and will never buy JVC again.

My wife bought this as a surprise for my birthday back in 99' so I have been using this player for over two years now. If you take the time to read all of the reviews below, you will notice that they are mixed at best. Overall, I have been pleased with it's performance. Like many reviewers here, I was pretty bummed that it would not play CDR's. At the time, I did not have a CD player in my house as I was just beginning to get into home audio. I was always into car audio, so my cd collection consisted of many burned cd's. I now have hundreds of CDR's, but I also have a changer to put them in. So now, it's not a real problem. Here is every other minute thing I can think of that has occured since I have owned this player:

1. Has locked up on various movies if I pause play. Arlington Road and Matrix played fine, even after pausing. I would say this has happened maybe five times ever. It would usually happen if I was on my second or third movie in a row, which I don't have the time to do very often.

2. I had to un-plug the player on two occasions because after locking up, none of the buttons would work on the remote or the player itself. I couldn't even turn the player off with the physical power button on the player.

3. The parental lock has come on all by itself only once. I have no idea why and cannot remember the movie I was trying to cue up. I just turned on the player, put in the movie, and it would ask me for the code for the parental lock. I read the manual and it said to type in all one's or something like that. I did that and it has not happened since.

4. The third tray has been somewhat louder at times than what I would consider normal when playing a DVD. This has not bothered me much since I can't hear it unless I am three feet in front of it with the glass door open, and the sound turned way down.

5. Is somewhat touchy when it comes to rental's. If there are many fine scratches on the surface of the disc, I get some weird behavior sometimes. i.e. scene jumping, audio cut out. I think any DVD player would have some form or another of this.

It is very handy having three trays to pop in some demo discs a shuffle back and forth without getting off the couch. The picure quality is great through S-Video, even though I have never had any thing to compare it to. The audio is fine as well. My receiver (Onkyo DS-595) does a great job of decoding the signal coming from this player. I do use the optical cable (not supplied)and the sound is fabulous.

Bottom line is that this player has served me very well. The above problems, in my opinion, are very minor and are not meant to make you run for your life upon seeing one. It's your money, so decide for yourself. Return it if you think it sucks. I plan on keeping mine as long as it will last.

looks nice and has a lot of bells and whistles

Weakness:

90 day labor and 1 yr parts , cost as much to fix as to buy a sony!

Bought this set cause the price was good and it had a lot of bells and whistles. also seem good to have 3 dvd drawers. it played a total of 9 months and froze. took it to a authorized repair shop and was informed it would take 150 from me and jvc would pay for two ic units that had gone bad. as far as i can tell jvc is no longer making good product to only have such a limited warranty. also their customer service is poor to not existent. Called three times and the recording told me they were busy and call back and then hung up on me! Sent an e-mail through their site and when I finally got a person they said that was not for complaints. They offered to pay $50 of my cost. But there would not be a warranty after that. Decided to cut my losses an buy a better set. Probably a Sony! This set is has no reliability and was told after the fact by someone at circuit city that there were a lot of problems. It has cost jvc a car stereo that I would have purchased and bought Sony now. Would advise not to buy junk like this. If you must buy junk buy cheap, at least if you have to put out 150 + a year in maintenance you can buy a new Junker every year for less!!

Strength:

Picture is very good, sound is incredible. (when the unit works)

Weakness:

It's a peice of junk, won't play some dvds or cd-r's, even though it claims to on the website.

When i got the player i was very excited, the quality of dvds is simply incredible. However, I soon noticed that that the player would not play and of my CD-R's. However, i remember there websitre claiming that the player did, in fact it was the top feture of the player; http://www.jvc.com/subprod.jsp?modelId=MODL010020
After speaking with JVC and telling them that they were "false advertising" they said they would have a manager contact me, which of course they never did. Upon calling them back they said it was just a "typo", even though it's not, it is clearly a link which then takes you to a page that explains what a CD-R is!!! Fine so it doesn't play CD-R's but then I found some DVD's that won't play in the unit either, even after an epprom reset which JVC claimed would fix the problem. It's too late for me to return the unit, so now I'm stuck with this piece of garbage, I guess I sound bitter, but why not, this product doesn't do what it was designed to do. I'll stick to wathcing movies on my computer.

Remote

After reading all these reviews I thought I better put my 2 cents in. I currently use a Sony DVP S-7000 DVD player. My kids are now watching movies and I really didn't like the idea of using a refrence grade player to amuse my kids.So I went out and purchased the JVC. First things first, there is very little diffrence in picture between the 2 players. I found this to be rather shocking. The Sony is a little bit more detailed but I doubt most people would notice the diffrence. As far as sound goes I hooked up both players through the optical out's and as you would expect there was no diffrence in sound. The JVC can't compete with the Sony when it comes to some of the other features such as pause, slow play etc. But it's not supposed to!!Your talking a $200.00 player versus a $1000.00 player. In regards to all the whiners carrying on about not playing CD'r who cares. The Sony won't play them either. If I want to play CD'r I use my Sony ES not my DVD player. This is a entry level player make no mistake about it, but for the money it's not to bad.

Strength:

Outstanding picture quality, killer CD-sound via the optical output, great overall player for the price.

Weakness:

Remote control functions/button placement is a little awkward. No shuffle option for the three trays.

This JVC gives great "bang for the buck." Its picture quality is very impressive (especially when used with component outputs.) Its CD quality sounds is quite amazing when compared to my older Sony 5-disk CD player.

As with most JVC components, the remote control is somewhat awkward and less user-friendly than Sony's, HKs, etc. Pressing the "Shift" key to fast forward through scenes at 2X speed is very cumbersome. Nevertheless, purchase a Philips Pronto (www.pronto.philips.com) and you will never worry about remote designs again.

This is no "reference" CD player, so do not expect it to be one for $250. On the other hand, it is a solid performer with both outstanding sound and picture quality. Not to mention, its gold casing also looks good in the video cabinet. You cannot go wrong with this unit.

Strength:

Perfect Picture and sound, just like every other DVD player

Weakness:

Quality

I posted an earlier review and since then I have been unable to use the first DVD drive. When I play a movie on the first drive, the motor is very load and It's very annoying. It's so loud, the drive is unusable. It doesn't happen on the other two drives. It's OK, I won't use the first drive any more. I still have an occasional pausing problem. I don't need to do an electrical analysis on the motor to determine that the particular motor that is in my unit is flawed. The motor is not supposed to be an noisy as it is. I haven't tested every DVD player, but my other RCA DVD player hasn't had any problems at all. Every movie has played perfectly and the unit doesn't make a lot of noise. I've owned other JVC products and have had problems. I had to send a receiver to the JVC factory in NJ for repair after it was purchased with some defects, but, on the other hand I've owned one of their Super A amplifiers for 20 years and it still works great. I've also owned a receiver of theirs that for the past 3 years hasn't had any problems. I bought this unit and have purchased many other items at an on-line auction and when you purchase things at on-line auctions, you are typically saving money, but you are more likely to have problems with the product you receive. Items at on-line auctions tend to be either a)Refurbashed units or b)Discountinued items.

This is a below average DVD player selling for a below average price so it gets 3 stars for value and 2 stars overall.
