I just started experiencing the same problems as a few of the previous reviewers. After exactly 18 months of use, too. The problem with mine is the dvd will play for about 30-60 seconds and the sound will stop. The video will continue but that's it. If I skip to another section, same thing. Plays and then sound stops. Sometimes it will stop altogether and will show the dreaded 'Loading' thing, too. Any suggestions on how to fix this would be appreciated. I'd consider $60 to get it taken care of but no way will I pay $150 to do it. Thanks

I have a similar complaint to Mike. Purchased this DVD player in February of 2002 and it stops playing DVD's in July of 2003. It will still play music cds and MP3's. When I put a DVD in the LCD reads No Disc. So I either have a very expensive cd player or a piece of junk. The latter is what I am thinking. I was happy until it stopped recognizing disks after 18 months of casual use. They want $135 to replace the main board. The warranty was just 12 months..... So in the trash it goes. The best part is I get to upgrade.

(That price above is in CDN dollars) My primary interest in this player was to try out the DVD-Audio feature and to have progressive scan to go with the big screen. As I felt there would be a lot of changesimprovements over the next few years, I did not want to spend a lot of money at this time and I already have a very good CD system. Video Quality: If you have a progressive scan TV and the DVD is film based, the quality is excellent. The player offers a lot of control over the image. You can get truly outstanding pictures. If you don't have a progressive scan TV, this is not the set for you. Output to a non-progressive scan TV is in my opinion poor and not even at the level of cheap DVD players. This seems to be an artifact of the chipset that JVC uses. Essentially the output when in non-progressive scan mode is affected by the progressive scan circuitry and the result is a degraded output from a basic non-progressive scan players. Audio Quality: I was very pleasantly surprised by the quality of the DVD-Audio playback. I had seen a review on the European version of this player for DVD-Audio and it was favourable. I would concur, the quality was quite good. Not as good as a really high end CD unit, but certainly up there with the mid-range players [and a few tweaks can make it even better!]. CD playback was mediocre though. However, if you have a reasonably good receiver, you can just use the DACs in your receiver to improve the sound quality. Internal Decoder: Never had any problems with the internal decoder. Worked just fine at everything I threw at it. General Use: Read the manual. For optimum sound set up, you need to configure things correctly. That goes for audio and video. Not overly hard, just read the menu. It has basic bass management when using the internal decoder which can be quite useful. You can set the delay on the channels as well as a +-6db range on the level. I find this range a bit limited and course, but your receiver can probably take care of this anyway. The zoom function is quite nice, once you figure out how to turn off the on-screen display for zoom which is not obvious or documented. Essentially you need to do an illegal function, i.e. hit the angle button on a single angle disc, etc. Then the zoom on screen display will go away. The remote is easy to use and well layed out and will also control a TV. I found the general menu usage to be better than my Toshiba. MP3 - Yes it plays them. However, the menuing system is pretty useless. You can only record them on a single directory and it alphabetizes. No other way to sort, no random playback, no ability to easily skip quickly through them, etc. The $100 Samsung I bought for my mom for Christmas is better in this respect. Note: If you play a movie and leave the disk in, remember that it will keep playing the title screen and keep accessing the DVD continually, which could effect the life of the player. Ugggghhhhhhh: I was bitten by the can't read disk problem. The only way to fix this is to take it in for repair. Mine died after about 4-5 months. It was fixed under warranty. It was a failure of the pickup-mechanism and is a known problem. I had no issues with it being under warranty, but if JVC hassles you, I would insist they fix it for free. This is a very very common problem according to the service guy at JVC. It has worked fine for a year since and is used very regularly.

This is a follow up to my initial review. After 3 months, my player also displayed the dreaded "loading" message but would do nothing. I found a work around by letting it sit on "loading" for 5-10 minutes, then turning it off and on a few more times. This got tiring so I bit the bullet and got it repaired for $65 (apparently they replaced a chip so it only took an hour of labor). Now it works like new. Seems some of the players were distributed with a bad chip. Overall, still has great sound and picture. The remote isn't set up the best, since the arrow keys are too low on the remote.

let me start by saying that the reviewer before me should be removed from this posting, his review was childish and insulting, BOTTOM LINE: extended warranties are offered for a reason, yes the salesperson gets paid, but the consumer gets protected. so if you dont buy it...shut the hell up!!!! on to my review, i bought this player for dvd audio only, already having a fantastic player in the arcam dv88, and getting tired of waiting for arcam to release the upgrade. i wanted the format so i took a chance, i can honestly say, i will not be looking back, for the money this player cant be beaten on dvd audio, i have the arcam cd72 cd player and did a head to head with the jvc using the dcc gold disc of queensryche empire and the dvd audio version, no-contest, the music just sounded better on the jvc, i hear people always saying that a really good cd player would outperform dvd-a or sacd, well to an extent they were right, 2 days ago i also picked up a sony dvd/sacd player on clearance at best buy, and i did the same head to head using aerosmiths "just push play" cd and sacd, but to my surprise, it sounded better on cd, so i took it back to best buy and ate 17.00 bucks on the sacd, which i later took and got 9.00 credit at rasputins, the jvc may not be that great for video, the picture its gives is just a touch above good, but nowhere near the dv88, unless you going progressive through an hd or plasma set (the jvc has progressive scan, the dv88 offers it has an upgrade) which i have neither. this player will not dissapoint, the pluses far outweigh the minuses. its a very musicle for dvd-a, maybe not for cd though. my system consists of: arcam avr200 receiver dv88 dvd player cd72 cd player 85p power amp tannoy mx 2's front mx 1's rear mx center paradigm pdr 10 sub cardas crosslink interconnects and speaker cable cardas quadlink 5c power cords cardas high speed data digital coax audioquest nrg-1 power cord (for the jvc)

This player is fantastic, had it for more than a year and never had a single problem, not even one skip, I play everuthing on it, DVDs, CDs, MP3s and Audio DVDs, I usually play rental DVDs roughly 2-3 per week, the features are endless, easy setup, very good product!!

Worst piece of crap I ever bought!!!! Had it for 3 months and now I just get a "LOADING" on the LCD!!!! Never worked again!!! # F....in MONTHS for christ's sake!!!! Called Ultimate Electronics and they say the parts warranty is still valid but only 3 months for labor!??? They say will cost $130 to fix the problem!!!!!! May as well buy a new player! NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A JVC PRODUCT!!!! NEVER!!!!!!

Plays just about everything. Onboard Dolby Digital, DTS, and DVD-Audio decoders. Can adjust picture settings and store them.

Lacks a seperate set of stereo outputs for connecting to a tv, so if you are using the 5.1 channel connections, the tv won''t have sound. Manual could be better.

Overall, this is a great player. Out of the box, the picture was a little dark, but using the picture adjustments I was able to get a nice picture (even using standard video). The DVD-Audio is an added bonus. I''m using the onboard decoders, so I had to run lots of cables, but overall no major complaints yet. If anything, the lack of stereo outs is its only fault.
