audio and visual sound and picture quality

layer change is slow and lens is very sensitive to scratches on dvds .

ive had this dvd for a long time now and it has some good and bad points . firstly dvds play great and the sound is sharp . as you know the quality of rental dvds isnt always exeptional and unfortunately the dv 4000 is very sensitive to scratches , smudges etc . layer change takes forever compared to other dv players . tray takes some time to open and close but thats not a problem . it has a fiber optic connection which most dvd dont have to connect to an amplifier . copied dvds although supported will give u a hard time watching it and listening too ! avoid at all costs . works beautifully with my marantz amplifier , bose 5.1 and powered subwoofer . the design is tuff and looks good too .

This unit feels cheap, it only ways a few pounds. CD sound is average @ best. Transport unit is anemic. I would recommend spening an extra 200 and getting a Rotel.

Excellent Video Quality

Slow in operating

This is my first DVD player and I have only had it for a short time.



I am very pleased with the video quality. Picture is clear, sharp, and colors are terrific. Sound is also first rate.

I use an S-cable direct to my Sony 32 Inch TV set.



I have used the Marantz DVD-4000 for playing CDs more frequently than for video so far. It is not my main CD player, but I have been surprised at just how good it sounds on CDs.



I have a separate music room where I do my most serious listening with my best speakers and electronics. The DVD Player is in a different room in which I watch televisi

and also listen to CDs with good but not my best speakers and electronics.



My only complaint is that it is much slower than my other CD

players in opening and closing the drawer, and starting to

play.



It seems to me to be a good value. I paid well under list price. There are certainly higher quality DVD players available, but for considerably more money.

If you want a very good DVD Player at a reasonable price I

recommend the Marantz DVD-4000 with no hesitation.

If you are in the market for your first DVD Player this would be an outstanding selection.

This is my first DVD product and i am amazed at the overall higher quality. The product and I started out on the wrong foot when it failed to power up, wouldn't play a DVD, then wouldn't play CD's. So after it was in the shop for 3 weeks and i got it back i was anxious to see if this machine was worth all this trouble- it was. Initially i was going to but the dv 7000 but i decided with all the new software that's coming out to wait 6 months and get a better machine- I really want THX. I am very satisfied with the machine.

This is an interesting product from Marantz that has its place. I think it is an excellent piece for an audiophile that likes quality equipment that looks nice, can lurk among very expensive audiophile gear without looking out of place, but isn't bent on having the absolute best video gear...though is planning to spend more than the average consumer.

It is interesting to note that it is priced to compete with step-up mass-market DVD players, only it is missing the features one would expect at that price (and you see on the like-priced mass market pieces), like gold-plated connectors and component video outputs. The DV4000 lists at $499.

However, I do think this fits an important niche in the DVD market. It is for those audiophiles that do not believe that the DVD player has quite reached the point where the technology of DVD players has started to level-out. In other words, if 1 to 2 years will see continuos change in DVD technology, such as progressive scan (already coming to market), recordable DVDs, DVD-Audio compatibility, SACD compatibility, blue lasers and even HD DVDs (perhaps HD DVD is a bit further-off than two years) than why spend so much right now. Of course with that considered, why not just get a Pioneer 525 for half the price? Well, once again, the Marantz DV4000 is of moderate build and weight, (though the faceplate is plastic...but a thick plastic!) looks uncluttered, elegant, and has good video quality.

I didn't have S-video on my television, so I tried this using the composite video output. I used an Audioquest Video 1 cable and a Tributary Silver video cable. Generally speaking, I love Audioquest cables, but the Tributary was the clear winner. The quality of video playback was excellent. The only thing that was annoying was the scintillation with checkerboard patterns (I think I read somewhere that this was common with DVD players) The set-up and on-screen menus were easy to understand and navigate.

CD playback was no worse than you can expect from a typical DVD player...no better than your average mass-market CD player. But hey it's nothing an MSB Link DAC or Musical Fidelity X-24K couldn't cure.

So, is this for you? If you want to spend a more than the average consumer, do not plan on upgrading your TV in order to get component video capability, and would be comfortable ditching this piece 2 or 3 years down the road due to the chance of significant technological change (or you don't think that there will be significant change) then this is a safe bet. If you demand component outputs, slightly better build and isolation than the DV4000 offers, than you may not be happy with this and will need to spend more.

As for me, I almost kept it since I'm concerned with the change the future would bring and was more satisfied with the build of this over the Pioneer 525 and like-priced gear. However, I will have upgraded from my 20 inch TV to something in the 32-36 inch range within about 3-4 months. Also, it appears that component video is all the rage. So, I decided to throw-down the extra cash for the DV7000 after living with the DV4000 for 2 weeks. A tough choice considering the cost of the DV7000 and the potential for change. But that is a story best saved for another review.

I first tried the Pioneer DV626D after good reviews in magazines. But when I installed it, I was very disappointed by the very noisy mechanism when reading DVDs. I came back to the store and exchange it with a Marantz DV4000, the only DVD player absolutely silent (Pioneer, Panasonic or Philips DVD player are really noisy compare to this one).

This DVD player is really great:
- Even the night with absolutely no noise, you can't hear the tray mechanism when reading DVD.
- This plyer really look fine with this quiet hifi look.
- The sound and image are very good.
- all kind of CDs or DVDs are read (CDR, CDRW, audio DVD, etc.).


There are only 2 minor bad things about this player:
- The mechanism is really slow (5 seconds to open the tray and 1 or 2 to start to read, for example) but you only do it once when you want to see a DVD.
- You have to point exactly the remote to the direction of the player (but in general, there is no obstacle between you and the player).

If you are very sensitive to the noise of the mechanism (like me), and you want a very good player (especially for the sound, but the image is really sharp too), do not hesitate, this is the good choice.

Well thought out. Quiet. Multi region without any internal fiddling. Plays just about anything e.g. CDR and CDRW as well.

Bought this player to replace my ailing Samsung 707 (also natively multi region) as it was getting a bit fussy about CD/DVD hybrid disks. Picture quality is superb as well as the soundstage it can generate. NO glitches as yet.

CD playback is excellent what more can you ask.

Easy to use on-screen menus. Nice, simple design. Video quality is great. Audio output is nice as well.

No component video output.

This is a quality unit that plays DVDs and CDs just fine. I'm still sticking with my regular CD player for now nonetheless, the sound is a little more refined (I'm using an external DAC). I can't imagine better video output - the sharpness and the crisp color is all there. I'm using the S-video output connected to a Sony Wega, by the way. It's too bad it doesn't have component output, which seems to be popular now. Again though, I can't see how the video could be much better on my setup.

Quiet operation, crisp picture and great sound. Once-only multi-region hack then you can forget regions completely.

Minor points not worth losing a star over: 1. Slow operation and 2. You have to point the remote straight at it to get it to 'see' it.

I can't wait to read a review of this in one of the Hi Fi mags. I hope they give it the five stars it deserves. The two points above are seriously the only complaints I can think of.

I took the Pioneer back because it was just too noisy when spinning the disk during normal playback... The Marantz is virtually silent. This is actually quite important if you don't have your player behind a glass door or something.

This is a mid priced player with mid-to-high end performance. Buy one, you won't regret it I'm sure.
