Strength:

Great picture and sound quality, both on DVD and audio CD's. Solid construction. Price!!!

Weakness:

Not being able to shuffle between disks.

I know I haven't owned this unit long, but I'm certainly not dissappointed with the picture quality I've seen, or sound quality I've heard so far. I've bought nothing but Onkyo and Denon stuff for the past 6 years, and I've never ever been dissappointed. I'm currently using a Denon Pro-Logic receiver which sounds Excellent with the Onkyo DV-C600 and my Bose501's/141 rears, HLS center and Infinity100w-sub. No Dolby Digital YET!
At first, I thought the mechanism on the C-600 was a bit noisey. I own an Onkyo 6 disk CD changer, (which I love)which is much less noisey, so that's what I compared it to. I went back to were I bought the C600, and was playing around with other models, such as the new one from Denon with the 5 disk DVD changer for $999.00. The Denon was even noisier. So I guess this is just the nature of the beast, or maybe I'm just a little to picky. Besides than that the only other thing that bothered me was that I can't shuffle between CD's, I know alot of you commented on that already. This option was somthing I was used to from my other Onkyo changer. I miss it a little. But not enough to be dissapointed in the overall quality of this machine. I would definitely recommend this player to anyone who is thinking of getting a multi-disk DVD changer.
I picked this component up for $399.00 folks. An absolute bargain compared to $500 which is what it usually sells for. So keep your eyes open for some great deals. My next purchase will be either the Onkyo 575 or 676 Digital receiver. I can't wait to hear this in Dolby Digital. I'm expecting to be one happy camper.

Strength:

Great DVD playback video(using enhanced black) and audio, great CD playback

Weakness:

VCD playback is choppy, no multi-disc shuffle

I recently changed my whole system. In this upgrade I got the onkyo tx-ds575 receiver (fantastic) and the dvc-600 player.

I wasn't going to write a review on it, until I played a VCD. During playback the picture is really choppy (the audio is great). Any type of fast pan or quick action is where this is most noteable. It appears the player doesn't play VCDs at a fast enough speed.

The non multi-disc shuffle is a pain but I have gotten used to it.. meaning I don't do it and don't care anymore.

If you don't get VCDs (very popular in Hong Kong) then this shouldn't be an issue.. However, I didn't think about VCD until I realized that films seemed to be released in Asia before the U.S.

Strength:

Superb picture and sound.. 6 disks

Weakness:

Was not cheap

Just got this today.. The audio has stunned me. Won't watch VHS tapes again (except for maybe Star Wars). Picture quality is sweet with the S-Video. I've been spoiled by my DirecTV system, and it easily rivals that quality. That problem with the Zoom-1 is taken care of by hitting display I believe.. I did it once earlier today. Not an issue. As for random playback, I dont listen to music much like that so its not an issue with me. I wanted to be able to put in 4-5 movies and a couple of CDs and be able to switch among them. This unit does just that. Wish it was a 200 disc changer, but I will accept this. I tend to buy only Onkyo these days. My 777 will be arriving monday, can't wait to try it out with the Dolby Digital :)

Strength:

Solid build quality, Superb sound, Excellent picture quality, easy setup, Good Manual

Weakness:

Very large casing, no shuffle function, noisey mechanics

My system consist of an Onkyo 777 reciever, Onkyo MD-2321 minidisc player, I use IXOS gold series digital interconnects through out, My speakers are DCM TimeFrames v8.0 for fronts, and M&K 750THX center and surrounds. All speakers are connected via audioquest CV-4 wire, and I can't forget I just connected my Monster HTS-2500 power conditioner. Now lets get down to the review. I purchased the DV-C600 on ebay for 220.00. I did lots of research before purchasing this DVD-CD player initially I was going to purchase seperate components but I needed to save some money. So I read and read reviews and became hesitant on purchasing this item but I was determined to keep everything Onkyo brand. I looked at the DV-C601, I figured because it was almost half the price of the DV-C600 the component was going to be of lesser quality somewhere. The 600 sounds fabulious playing music CD's and produces a vibriant picture. My only concern is when it starts to play
a cd/dvd it makes like a grinding/vibrating noise I don't know why this happens. Another issue is the the lights that represent the disk are always out of sync. I called Onkyo on this issue they said in order for the lights to be in sync you have to hit the change disc button so the player scans every disc on its tray then it will work. The second issue was the zoom word on the screen. I learned to get rid of it you by hit your setup button on your remote I believe it was once or twice. I have this player in my entertainment unit behind the glass doors so once the doors close the noise is gone. Besides those few problems I can live with it. I don't know if all these problems are common on these players but I would never pay 500.00+ for this player. My older model Philips CD changer was very smooth and fast on loading with excellent build quality and sound also had a more attractive display and buttons but it was getting old and it was time to upgrade unfortunetly Philips stopped making this series. So I had to look for a new brand. I'm a very meticulous buyer so I wanted to keep everything the same brand so Onkyo out done every body else using the scale of performance verses price.

Solid build

Weakness:

Stopped working after 5 months

I thought I was the only one who got a crap unit. I thought I had the misfortune of drawing a bad apple from the barrel. After reading the reviews, I see that I was not the only one.

I got a refurbished unit from ubid.com last September. I thought I got a great deal, considering the fact that I have had good luck with my past refurbished electronic purchases. I attracted to Onkyo's reputation for solid construction and quality (as touted in their advertisement).

Unfortunately the unit stopped reading any discs after 5 months. While watching a movie, I stopped the movie to get my snack from the kitchen. After being away not more than two minutes, I tried to restart the movie. The DVD changer refuse to recognize any discs. I tried the DVD cleaner, etc., with no luck. Since this was a refurbished unit, it only came with 90-day warranty.

I spoke a friend who was in retail electronic business who told me the cost of fixing the changer can run upto $200 or more. He told me to write it off and I would be better off getting a new player.

I cannot say enough how disappointed I am. I truly thought that Onkyo was a brand to trust. Admittedly, the Onkyo is solidly built. But what use is solid construction if it does not work? I doubt I will get another Onkyo product.

Woo hoo! After I wrote the review, I decided to open up the DVD changer that has been sitting there, gathering dust for 2 months. I thought what the hey. Knowing that loose connection is a common problem in computers, I decided to unplug and plug in all the connections that I could reach in the machine. There was one band of wires (don't know the term, but it looks like a plastic strip) that led from the lens unit to what looks like a video processor circuit board. That seem to do the trick. It's working again. DVD, CD, and VCD are all correctly recognized and plays! Let's just hope that it's still working tomorrow. It's still a piece of crap.

Audio/video performance. Zoom feature.

This is my second posting, somewhat of an update after living with this beast for 4 months.

I have to say that I've grown quite fond of the 6 disk monster. I keep 4 of my kid's movies loaded and 2 of mine. This way, I don't have to worry about them messing with the discs.

The video performance continues to impress. The zoom feature is great for expanding the 2:35:1 letterbox movies a notch on a smaller TV. Remember to press the SETUP button twice to remove the ZOOM 1 display.

I've gotten over the shuffle issue and am very happy with my Onkyo product. It is kept in our bedroom and paired up with the high regarded budget Kenwood VR-309 DD/dts receiver, MTX inwalls, DCM center, Energy eXL:10 sub. Oh, almost forgot my Home Depot 6" inwall surrounds.

Hey, for a Heinz 57 system, it is more than satisfying.

onkyo construction, dvd and cd mix, sound quality

Weakness:

size

adding this dvd changer to my system took about a year of planning. It was worth the wait ,typical onkyo construction creates a unit that weighs 18lb,yes buy your hi fi by weight!.Picture quality was the first improvement I noticed mainly in fine detail, this was compared to my basic toshiba 3109 which by the way is the best of the budget models. The problems that others complained about seem to all stem fromlack of reading of the extensive owners manual. My only negative is the depth of this unit ,i thought the 777 receiver was deep but this unit is 2" deeper with cables which required some modification of my ent center!! I picked the DVC 600 up for $399 from circuit city ( brand new ) that was the cheapest price i had seen in a year except for refurbs

Strength:

Picture quality, sound quality

Weakness:

No 6-disc shuffle, programming CD-play requires TV (on-screen), interrupt handling algorithms sometimes causes commands from remote (i.e., "stop") to be ignored

I can't provide the most objective review because I can't do any side-by-side comparison with anything. This is my first DVD player but I also bought it along with an Onkyo TS-DX676 receiver, JBL S-series speakers and a JBL sub. As such, the audio quality of my system could be attributable to any of these variables just as easily as the DVD.

As compared to VHS, however, the DVD picture quality is vastly better - - its hard to believe I'm looking at the same TV (Panasonic 27" superflat). As far as the sound quality there is no comparison. I'm letting the receiver do the D/A conversion (running optical out of DVD for audio) so as long as the bit stream from the DVD is accurate I would argue it has little to do with the sound. However, my receiver has the same D/A converter as the player and the sound is awesome.

Yeah, I'm bummed about the shuffle issue and I don't like having to turn on the TV to program CD play but I guess its not a showstopper. The audio and viewing experience provided by the unit and its rugged construction outweigh the negatives.

One more complaint: when you turn the unit on it wants to play a CD or DVD if you already have one loaded. If you press "stop" in about the first 10-12 seconds after turning it on, it ignores it until AFTER the disc starts playing. Also, if you switch discs from the remote and want to go to any track past 1 you have to wait until track 1 has started to punch in the track number you want. Inefficient interrupt handling.

Would I recommend buying this unit? Probably not, but the reason is that an Onkyo rep I spoke to after buying it said that they will be coming out with some units in June, 2000 that fix the majority of these problems and possibly add HDCD decoding so I'd recommend waiting for one of these. I do definitely recommend Onkyo products and I'd recommend the unit I have over just about any Sony and on par with Denons in the $1,000 price range.
