Casual Listener

Strength:

Above average skip, fwd, rev. Zoom feature. All around performance(especially audio) for the price.

Weakness:

Reliability comparable to Hyundais & Yugos.

I got mine from ubid, refurbished. I hooked it up, and I tried playing DVDs, but it wouldn't. Some of the discs made it to the menu screens, but it wouldn't go any further. I tried the CDs, and not only they played, they sounded better than any CD players I've ever owned(notice the "casual listener" up there). Ubid agreed to fully refund the unit, but I was so impressed with the sound quality of the unit, I bought another one from them.

The second one worked perfectly, I had no complaints. Maybe the remote was ugly, and too wide, but that's it. I was in love with it, then little by little, the symptoms of the first unit started to show up. By the second week after purchase, it wasn't loading most of the CDs, or DVDs. When it did load, it wasn't able to read them most of the time. This time, ubid refused take it back, and told me to send it back to United Radio, for warranty repair. I haven't heard anything from them, and I have this feeling, that when I get it back, it's not going to work at all, or it's not going to last too long.

This is probably the last time, I'd take a chance on a "refurbished unit." Maybe except a Nakamichi receiver...

Strength:

Looks good

Weakness:

Doesn't Work

What a disaster.

First, let me say I did a lot of research before I pulled the trigger on this unit. I was attracted by the Onkyo name, mostly good reviews on this site, and the shift from onboard DTS processors (which I don't need since I am matching with a Denon AVR3300) to beefier internal components. I knew I wouldn't get the shuffle, few concerns about the remote, but hey, it had everything else I wanted. So......

I ordered a DVC-501 from the merchant mentioned above over the internet. When the unit finally arrived, Car Audio Video had contracted with "Crazy Eddie's Electronics" because they were out of stock. Not surprisingly, Crazy Eddie sent me a previously used (and inoperable) piece of junk that is still sitting in my office. So, Car Audio Video apologized and offered to send me the DVC-600 (which I had really wanted in the first place) at no additional charge. Great!! I'm livin' large and everything is sweet.

Product number 2 finally arrives, I've bought my monster cables and I'm dying to hook her up and play 'Gladiator'. That evening is DVD bliss - everything working, sounds good, scrolled through some 'Gladiator' scenes.... I get a call the next day at work from my wife saying it won't read any discs in the tray. Hmmmmm - sounds like a message posted here by someone else. Sure enough, that first night in DVD heaven was to be my last. The unit would not read a single disc from there on - and I'm not talking crazy CDR stuff or anything - regular old (and brand new) CDs. Soooooo.....

Back to Car Audio Video. They apologize again and offer to send me another as soon as they receive my defective unit. Okay, but I have to pay $20 to send the piece of crap back to them. Not cool. Okay, well I still have Crazy Eddie's DVC500 sitting here, I'll just plug this baby in until the new one arrives and return to DVD heaven! Back to the monster cables, hooked up, power on - MECHA ERROR!!!! Arrrrghhhhhh!!!!!! Sooooo.....

Onkyo has clearly cheaped out and tossed-out every shred of audio greatness associated with their brand. I don't know where these units are being made, and what components they are making them with, but the whole thing doesn't work. Save yourself some time and hastle and skip Onkyo - they ain't what they used to be.

Strength:

Extremely Has whatever you could dream up. THX Select Certified (check Lucasfilm Thx web site). Zone 2 Powered capability. DTS. 5 S-Video Imputes. Tons of watts. Solidly built. Extremely up to date with all the modern features of a Surround sound Receiver.

Weakness:

When I find some I will get back to you.

WOW. Did I say WOW already. Okay it just a receiver, but for a $ 1000, it is very hard to beat. Compare it to similar models, and you will know what I'm talking about. Now for the ears. I have an old set of Bose 601 Series II, and I never knew how good they could sound. I'm able to punch up the volume and get goose bumps.
