Strength:

Output options, multi-disc, sound, video

Weakness:

no cd random, dual layer trouble

This is my first DVD player so I don't have a reference to compare to. I 'bargined' to get the player free when I purchased my tv.

I did not buy the unit for CD play so I am not totally at a loss with the lack of random CD play. But I can't imagine that adding that feature to the system would be that difficult. Any bottom of the barrel CD changer has this feature these days.

I have had this player for a few months and have consistent problems with dual layer discs. Getting them to play is like voodoo magic! You have to wave your hands, rub your head and jump up and down to get the player to load a gold dual layer disc. I haven't been able to find any other complaints about this so I am wondering if something is up with my unit.

The remote is a bit ugly with the yellow and white back ground and the uniform small rectangular buttons. I have a Onkyo 757x receiver and the remote on that is perfect, the amp and dvd remote teams need to talk!

Overall this unit is great, for the current market price and feature set it can't be beat.

Strength:

Price, multi-disk player

Weakness:

Only plays limited type of cd-r's

When I first hooked this unit up I was amazed at how much beter the sound and picture were than my first generation Toshiba. I first looked at buying a more expensive unit but decided to wait until DVD-Audio and SACD players are more common and cheaper. For the money I think this unit is a very good value. My only complaint is that I thought that "direct digital path" ment that a 24/96 PCM signal would reach my recievers 24/96 D/A as is, not convert it to 16/44 on the way. I know I'm being a baby. I will shut up now. Great unit for the price.

Strength:

Typical Onkyo strengths - good picture and sound, sturdy construction

Excellent cd audio quality

Weakness:

No shuffle between audio disks! In CD mode, it's picky about which CDs it will play. It doesn't support CD-Rs or CD-RWs, but it also barfs on some cds that my Kenwood cd player has no problems with. Lousy remote with no backlighting - you'll want a universal remote instead. The player is too deep, and barely fits into a standard entertainment center.

I upgraded from my single disk Toshiba to this Onkyo. Besides being drawn by the fabled Onkyo quality, I wanted a multi-disk player so I could free my kenwood cd player for use elsewhere.

Typical Onkyo strengths - well built, excellent picture and sound quality. Zoom works well, as does multi-speed ff and rew. Has both optical and co-ax digital outs, which is nice if your rcvr only has one co-as in like my JVC. The cd audio quality is excellent.

I do have some complaints about it. No shuffle between audio disks! How can you build a changer, and not build in random play?

Strength:

Picture, Sound

Weakness:

Had some trouble playing one DVD but all the others played fine.

Like the previous purchases of this unit. When it works it seems to works great. However, I only had this unit two days and then it stopped recognizing DVD's and CD's. The unit was marked as refurbished by Onkyo. I'm tempted to have it fixed as it has a thirty day warranty and I paid so little for it. . However, as others have had problems I am wondering if it is worth repairing only to have to have it repaired again quickly after. I had this unit paired with a Harman Kardon 510 and the two in tandem produced some of the finest sounds and video I've experienced. If only it worked.

Strength:

Sound and picture quality

Weakness:

Remote sucks, pauses from the movie's main menu to playing (not that big a deal)

This is an update of my prior review. I bought this unit refurbished at Ubid for $269 and it died within a few months. As a side note, most anything you buy at Ubid refurbished is "as is' and do not expect any help at all.

I ended up bringing the unit into a trusted appliance repair and he had to replace 4 capacitors on the board. Refurbished my ass, they probably didn't even crack the cover and just resold it.

Anyway, buyer beware.

I just played Charlies Angels and $85 later it works fine again for the time being. I still figure I' doing okay since I'm into it for $355 now and that still less than most places sell it for.

I'm changing my rating because I don't think it's fair to Onkyo that I rake them over the coals for a refurbished product bought from an unauthorized dealer. My fault.

Will NOT random play between discs when playing music CD's!

I wish I had read these reviews before I made this purchase. I can't believe any company would market a 6 disc changer that won't random play (shuffle play) between discs! For me, this is the ONLY reason to own a 6 disc changer. Please, anyone out there that feels the same way, please e-mail Onkyo about this. I've always been happy with Onkyo products in the past. I can't believe how they dropped the ball on this one. No wonder there's so many of these units for sale on Ebay! Mine will be shortly.
I can't fault it as far as picture quality goes. It looks great on my 53" Sony XBR set.

Strength:

Picture and sound quality, well built.

Weakness:

Size

My first DVD player. I am happy with it, however, I have kept my old Sony 6 disc changer to play CD's becase this unit is fussy about playing Cd's I make on my computer off of Napster etc.

As a DVD player, I like it a lot and feel for under $300 it's a steal. It feels well built and the picture & sound are awesome.

I read all the comments about the remote. I don't agree. I think it works fine. Besides, I programmed everything into my pioneer VSX receiver universal remote anyway.

All in all I would recommend this player as a good entry level DVD, but not as a CD player.

Strength:

Extraordinary picture and sound quality!

Weakness:

The remote could have been more fabulous

People this is an incredible bit of machinary! The quality of the video and audio on this DVD changer is extraordinary...surpassing all but the most expensive players on the market. This IS, afterall, the primary job of a good dvd player.
To those of you who would belittle this product because it doesnt random shuffle your CD's..PLEASE by all means, go buy a dvd player laden with those bells and whistles with inferior video/audio reproduction and that will continuously be in the shop for repairs!
Onkyo has a winner here ladies and gentlemen! It is built like a tank , and the quality oozes from all aspects of it. If you want superior audio/video performance you can't go wrong with this dvd changer. If you want to whine about whats not there...I wonder if you would be happy with any product.

Strength:

Great picture, wonderful sound, lots of neat bells and whistles.

Weakness:

Spends most of it's time doing nothing, because it is dead.

I am happy with every aspect of this thing, except the minor point that it is not functional most of the time. This is a rather large point, however.

I have driven the three hour round trip to my nearest Onkyo service center to drop it off, and the three mile round trip to pick it up twice.

On about the third DVD played (doesn't matter what type, what movie etc...) it has serious trouble changing layers, then dies. Refuses to recognize the disk (any disk, dvd or cd). I take it to my guy, he fuddles with it, it works for him, I bring it home and it dies.

He has finally admitted that he does not have a clue, and has offered to send it back to Onkyo for me to see if they will make it right. Guess we will see.

If this machine would run, I would be delighted with it. As it stands now, I am not sure where to go from here. Not sure that I even want a replacement.

Despite all the wonderful virtues it has shown in the few short hours that it has actually run problem free, I have to give it a very low rating. I is not good for much if it does not run, and I am getting sick of traveling with it, waiting for it, and wishing that I had a machine that I could watch my movies on.
