Strength:

Very good picture and sound quality, looks good as well.

Weakness:

Remote is UGLY! Good range.

WOW...talk about love and hate all rolled into one! This unit really has a great picture quality as well as sound quality. But I must say, it was a big disappointment. I read all of the reviews here, but decided based on my past experiance with Onkyo, I would try this first. I had all of the problems mentioned here, very loud when loading, dual layer discs are a hassel for the machine to load, constant disc errors. Just a total pain in the rear end. But when it loaded up...it was fab! I just couldn't take it anymore so.....

Much love to the boys at ABC Warehouse for replacing this unit after I had it at home for three weeks. Bought the Harman/Kardon DVD5. So far I love it. I'll review it after I've had it for a while.

Best of luck to all.

Strength:

They kept it simple, nice looks, easy interface, typical onkyo

Weakness:

its a little bulky, but if u have an onkyo reciever they look good together

I must say I was a little skeptical about reading reviews and seeing how many people were saying this dvd is better than that one, and this one is clear,etc...Its True!!!!This dvd was such an upgrade to the sony I couldnt believe it, I just assumed that a dvd players were all the same(but same had added features)WRONG!!!!!The picture coming out of this thing is so sharp, its great. I popped in saving private ryan a film I had seen at least 20 times, and the detail this player brought out was incredible, I cant wait to hook it up to the rest of the components and submit a review at a later date.

Strength:

Blacklevel feature, sharp pic and accurate sound seperation.

Weakness:

remote. #@!

This player was a vast improvement over the sony and awai players, in both picture and sound replication. As mentioned above, the black level adjustment is an important and necessary feature in dvd.I'm still a strong advocate for the single player format, but I'll give this player a go at it. Excellent value! Onkyo has done it again folks!there's no 6 disc player on the market with the quality and features the 601 offers.Mate this player with an Onkyo (Integra) reciever and you'll "be there"...

Strength:

Perfect sound and DVD reproduction, in Dolby Digital. Onkyo build quality.

Weakness:

No full random across all CD's.

I bought this to go with my 575x receiver. I think the 601 is a bargain at $330. Nothing in this price class compares. I have the sound delivered to my receiver via fiber optic, and video direct to the TV via component video. Looks and sounds great. Can't fault this machine with regard to video or sound quality. However, the lack of full random is annoying. And my cheap Technics CD changer has "spiral" mode, which plays the first cut off each CD, then the second, etc., which is a great feature for parties. We'll miss that. However, for the price, this thing rocks.

Strength:

Great Build,Good sound,Good picture,329.00 for a 6 disc DVD player

Weakness:

Remote a little weak

I believe this dvd player to be a excellent model for an excellent price.I think it loads in a timely matter personally. The picture is better than the Yamaha was in my opinion.I dont think there is much difference in DVD players in the low end market but for a 6 disc changer 329.00 is a rock bottom price.

Strength:

love the six dvd capability

Weakness:

limited cd capability ie you can't program selected tracks very easily.

I was thrilled with the performance of this product at first. Now it sucks. after about 5 months it started freezing on DVD's and cd's. I took it into the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. They cleaned it out and told me to make sure and use clean dvd's (which I already did). 7 Months later (three of which I didn't use it) the problems are back and much worse. it still freezes up frequently. THen it spins the dvd's themselves very fast and noisily. Lastly it's newest trick is to spin the dvd tray around rapidly. Do not buy this thing. I wish there were some reviews on this site when I bought it. I would have stayed away from it and bought a different brand. Anyone had luck getting it repaired by onkyo let me know please.

Strength:

Solid construction, good layout of buttons on unit, disc exchange while playing, good on-screen menu, adequate outputs.

Weakness:

Won't play SOME CD-R's, no random across all tracks, poorly laid out remote, a bit slow to load, and slow audio transition between chapters.

I purchased the Onkyo 601 DVD player to match my Onkyo 777 receiver and it does so rather nicely. It is a solid box with a solid quiet transport and good overall control layout. However, there are some issues with this unit that need to be discussed:

1) Lets clear up the CD-R(W) issue - I have used many DVD players over the past few years and the greater majority of them do not play CD-R's, so I was not under the impression that this unit would either. I was pleasantly surprised when I popped in a disc that I had made a few weeks ago (green color backing - Generic Brand) and whola IT WORKED! I went and grabbed another disc (blue color backing - Verbatim) and sure wnough it returned a disc error. After some playing around with various discs I have come to the conclusion that my unit (and perhaps all units?) can play green colored CD-R media, but seem to fail with other colors and formats (I haven't tried CD-RW's yet). So, to wrap this up I would say that the unit has exceeded my expectations in this area.

2) Audio and Video Quality - I have to say that the audio and video out of this unit are excellent. Dobly Digital and DTS work very well. However, there is one glich. When the DVD skips to another chapter (e.g. from the Warning message at the beginning of all discs to the menu) 1-2 seconds of audio (in DD and DTS) is lost. I cannot fairly say if this due to my receiver or DVD player, but I suspect that the DVD player is the culpret. In addition, the unit is a bit slow to start playing DVD's (not CD's), taking up to 5-10 seconds to load and start.

3) LED Display - Overall the display is clear and functional, but unimpressive compared to other comparable models that tell you what surround mode is playing and graphically represent the speakers being used. The Onkyo display reminds me of the display on their CD Changer.

4) Remote control - Tiny buttons with no shapes other than little rectangles. Good features on the remote, but overall cumbersome to use (unlike the 777 receiver remote which I have programmed and works GREAT).

5) Quality - I have only had this unit for a few weeks, so I guess time will tell. Past experience with Onkyo products leads me to believe that their quality is very good (I hope I'm not jinxing myself with that last remark).

OVERALL - The Onkyo DVC-601 is a winner, but not an overachiever. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good 5-6 disc DVD changer, but would also encourage people to give other manufacturers products a test drive as well.

Strength:

Good picture and sound, built well, component video, optical audio out, 6 disc changer

Weakness:

Won't play cyanine based CD-R's (the blue kind) but it does play the phthalocyanine based CD-R's (green and gold). The remote blows.

Haven't experienced most of the problems people have reported with this unit. It has played every DVD completely perfectly. Not so much as a hiccup. Also, I haven't experienced any layer change delays. It won't play cyanine (blue) CD-R's. We probably should be using those CD-R's made specifically for music anyway (plays in all players). Best quality 6-disc changer that I could find for the dough.

Video

Weakness:

None

I have watched about 30 DVD's since I purchased this unit and I must say the Video blows away my old Toshiba and my friends Sony. The 1 to 2 second hickups don't bother me. I bought this from Ubid and had to return the first one because it was damaged during shipping. Can't wait to get my Tx-DS787.
