    Strength:

    Excellent picture and sound quality.

    Weakness:

    None so far....

I was on the market for my second new DVD player for about last two weeks. Toshiba really served me nicely for last two years, but right now I can not watch the movies in new dvd format without the firmware upgrade. I've decided to buy new player and keep existing as secondary. After doing the research and reading various posts on the net I've decided to buy either Sony or Onkyo. I KNOW, I KNOW....
My dilema was gone after a short while when I listened and saw the picture quality on Onkyo player. Forget about the life and Sony for a while and enjoy the video and sound that comes from DV-S535.If you are on the market for new DVD player, definitely try the Onkyo player. Five star unit.

    Strength:

    Great picture and excelent sound

    Weakness:

Doesn't read CDR's(the old ones),remote and my friends are allways at my place

    Very happy with the product.
Picture razor sharp and sound is excellent.

The audio unit has very good sound, warm bass and brushed highs.

This machine is definitely much better than Harman/Kardon, as far as the audio section goes, obviously.

    I highly recommend this product.

Good priece for this Mashine!!! (Prieces tend to be higher here in Europe but it is still a great buy)

    Strength:

Both Sound and Picture quality is astounding.

    Weakness:

    Drive motor is loud LOUD.
    Remote Control.

Okay, let’s settle this Remote Control issue once and for all. I’ve read a lot of online reviews of this product and the remote is definitely a bone of contention. Despite this controversy, I decided on this model and recently purchased it. Now that I have first hand knowledge, I’m weighing in on the issue. Here goes: All the folks who, in their reviews, are saying, “ Hey, it’s only the remote, it don’t really matter, just live with it” are WRONG. Those who view the remote as a key ingredient for the overall enjoyment of the product are CORRECT. Think about it. The remote control is the middle man between you and your machine, it’s how you interact with it. Whatever the quality of the equipment, in order to USE it you have to go through the remote. Count in your head how many times you physically touch the actual player and then compare that to how often you pick up that remote. See what I mean? If the remote is poorly designed and difficult to use, then using the machine will be difficult. Sounds simple? It is! Considering I paid $300 for the player, this remote is an offensive insult. Using it in broad daylight is challenging… in a dimly lit or dark room it’s an exercise in futility. I know, you shouldn’t need light to use a remote because after you get use to it, you should be able to do it by feel. Ya but not with this thing. The buttons are tiny. No wait, scratch that. They’re teensy weensy! They are crammed in way too close together. They are not positioned and laid out in a logical pattern. Look at your other remotes, things are grouped together by category and function. I can use my other remotes blindfolded. I’ve been trying with the Onkyo remote for three months… still very little progress. I really enjoyed the astounding picture and sound quality of this player. But I returned it anyway. Not mostly because of the remote, but mostly because the drive motor is LOUD to the point of being a distraction. Especially during soft dialogue or quiet times in the film. I must say though, the remote control certainly made my final decision to bring it back a lot easier. Five stars for sound and picture quality, minus one for noisy motor, minus one for remote.

    Strength:

good sounding as a CD-Player; excellent picture; Aluminum face plate

    Weakness:

does not play CD-R or CD-RW

This is my first DVD player. I have not used other DVD players. I cannot compare the picture quality. The picture is very sharp and free of noise. No problems playing DVD yet. As a CD-player, the sound is excellent with excellent soundstage and clarity. Don't let its spec fool you. Although it is rated 0.01% harmonic distortion, it actually measures 0.002% for the direct outputs and 0.0065% for the acoutic control outputs. But use the acoutic control outputs because they sound better!

    Strength:

    Great Picture, Sound

    Weakness:

    Remote

This player is great. The sound and picture are awesome.
I played a bunch of DVDs and had no problems with any of them. My only problems are small ones. The remote is alright but not great. My only real problem with it is that the buttons are small and are not visable in the dark.
The only other little problem I have is the display. it seems that you can't have the display on how much time is left without have the display on the screen, this is only minor though. About the CDR issue, most of mine don't work on it except I just got some new sony CDQ-74CN CDRs and they work fine. Make sure they're the 1X-12X ones because I have some old ones that don't work. All in all it is great DVD player and much better than the Sony one that I have used, even though that one cost about 200 dollars more. I think this would be a great DVD player for anyone.

    Strength:

Video quality, sound quality, zoom feature, price, and just about everything else.

    Weakness:

Haven't found anything yet. Others say it doesn't play cd-r's, haven't tried it yet, but I guess that is a weakness if you need it to.

Oh man I love this machine. I'm upgrading from an older Proscan DIVX compatible machine (couldn't stand that damn DIVX logo staring me in the face), and I am very surprised at the differences I have noticed with this machine.

To start off, the video and audio are noticably sharper. The proscan didn't have coaxial, and after doing several tests, I really understand what people mean by saying that coaxial has a "warmer" sound. Every detail of the onkyo is very nice, from the screen saver to the bit rate meter to the zoom. Just nice little features that make it a much better product than others in its price range ($300 at Crutchfield).

Yeah, the remote is a little ugly, but I like it none-the-less. It's a good remote with every feature on it that needs to be. People that dislike a product because of the remote are seriously screwed up and definately have some form of obsessive compulsive disorder, because its just a remote.

I disagree with other reviews that it is an "ugly" product. It had a solid build to it and looks just as nice as any other video or audio product you stick it next to.

In the end, it's a great product for the price. The Matrix sounds phenomenal, and looks much crisper than on my old one. I recommend this for anyone looking for a DVD player that has cool features and can really stand out in quality that doesn't want to pay $1000.

    It's a great machine...

    Strength:

Awesome audio and video quality, solid build

    Weakness:

    Picky about CD-R's

Pretty flawless as far as I'm concerned. Mated to a JVC 32" D-series tv via component video provides a great picture with beautiful color saturation. The audio output is just as good. I've got it going into a Denon AVR-1801 and then to Phase Tech Teatro Tower 10 speakers. I'm using it mostly for a cd player now, and it sounds great using analog outputs or using the Denon to decode the coaxial digital output. I think it looks good, too, and it has a nice aluminum faceplate. If you like to play cd-r's, it doesn't like the cheap ones. I've had good luck with Sony and Imation digital audio cd-r's, as well as a couple of Sony data cd-r's (CDQ-74CN). I have no problem recommending this player.

    Strength:

Sound Quality, Picture - both superb!

    Weakness:

Ugly remote (guess I can live with that), too early to tell

I took back the carousel changer because I'm one of those fickle audio enthusiast who could not live without the random/shuffle play for DVDs! I picked up a Onkyo carousel CD changer and also picked up the DV535 - just got it hooked up - picture and sound quality are terrific on 5th Element! CD audio is crisp and clear - I'm hearing details i had never heard before on my "old" CD player! It's still early but I dont think you can go wrong with this single disk DVD/CD player - sounds awesome!!!

    Strength:

Zoom, black level setting, quality, AUDIO!!!

    Weakness:

It doesn't work with my Plus one remote :(

After using the RCA for about 6 months, this player is a breath of fresh air.
The Audio on this player is fantastic and also adjustable for user prefrences!
The zoom is also great, the picture hardly uses any clarity . There is no loud spinning noise from the DVD (like the RCA). For the price ($299 at Crutchfield) this is a great player. It's probably better than most players that are around $500. Highly Recommended.

    Strength:

Detailed picture & sound, zoom function

    Weakness:

    remote

I am a diehard Onkyo enthusiast and, after upgrading to their 777 receiver, I had to get an Onkyo DVD. I was not disappointed!! The picture is razor sharp and the sound is great. It just made my HK710 CD player obsolete! I especially like the zoom function. I am not a fan of 2.35:1 widescreen DVD's on my 32" TV and the level 1 zoom makes the picture a little larger with no appreciable deterioration in picture.

I just watched The Jackal in DTS and it blew me away!!!

This DVD player is highly recommended!
