Strength:

Component output. AC-3 and DTS compatible.

Weakness:

I saw one glitch in the middle of somewhere when it plays Titanic.

I paid it for $242 with shipping. To me, it's fine for in frequent glitch cuz I don't watch DVD much. So far, I am still satisfied with its good performance such as clear picture and sound.

Strength:

Easy to set up, lightweight, easy to use, connections, quality.

Weakness:

Remote buttons a bit tiny.

I've had this machine for a year now and I love it. I am only now writing a review for it because I never knew what it was like to deal with another machine. My girlfriend recently purchased an APEX machine at Circuit City (it was my recommendation, but only because she wanted one and didn't have a ton of money to get a better brand name). Anyway thanks to the frustrations of that machine, I have learned to love mine. The A120U reads disks quickly, and the only problem I have had so far was a bit of pixel problems reading X-Men. I have 68 dvd's now and the machine has done a good job with all. The player has really easy to set-up menu's and they can be accessed hassle free while the movie is playing. I totally recommend this player. In fact one of my buddies at work has the same model and feels exactly the same about it.

Strength:

Terrific picture, easy to use, fast access

Weakness:

Horrible horizontal bars of discoloration from the component out jacks

This DVD player was wonderful, until I bought a Sony 32" WEGA and used the component outs. I was very disappointed to realize I cannot use the component video output because of ugly horizontal discoloration. Even my 11 year old daughter remarked " Dad, why does Jim Carey have an orange bar across his face"? Unfortunately, I can't return the unit because I've had it over two months. grrr....

Strength:

Component Video, Numerous Hook-Ups, 24/96, Price.

Weakness:

If it was a dual laser player (one for DVD & one for CD) it would be great.

Looked a while for an inexpensive DVD player, and got this one for sub $200 at an after Holiday sale. I am blown away by the picture, the features and the value.

The only draw-back (if any), is that you have to go over the manual with a fine tooth comb to extract all the features from the machine--but that in itself is a lot of fun!

Strength:

Component inputs, DTS audio, quick loading of DVDs

Weakness:

Small Remote, Won't play CD-Rs, won't play my VCDs properly

This is my first DVD player, and overall I'm very happy with it. I bought it back in October 1999 for $240. It has taken every DVD I've thrown at it (currently the number is 100 DVDs). The quality is great, especially through the S-video and Component inputs. Audio is great as well. I was particularly pleased that this DVD player supports DTS. Other DVD players I've tried take a long time to load and start the DVDs, not this one. It loads quickly and plays right away.
My problems with the player are minor. One is the small remote. It is difficult to hit the button I want sometimes due to its small, unnatural shape. I would also prefer if it played CD-R disks. My only other problem has been playing VCDs. I bought The Shining miniseries on VCD. It plays fine on my computer, but the Panasonic player blows up the picture to larger than my TV. It goes about an inch beyond the screen, which is very annoying, and makes it unwatchable.
This is a great first DVD player. It has almost all the features I could want, at a great price. I'm very pleased.

Strength:

Quick DVD startup, Resume Play, Chapter Access, Menu Bars

Weakness:

Player Construction, Remote, Lack of Special Features

I was looking for an entry level DVD player to add to my current system, this system contains an old Sony STR-611 Receiver (Dolby Pro-Logic Only) w/5 Boston Speakers and a Panasonic 27" CT27SF30 TV (Capable of 700 lines of Resolution). I got a Panasonic A120U and the Toshiba 2109 from Best Buy, both were priced at $279.87, around the same time so I could do a performance comparison. I had both machines hooked up at the same time when I did the comparison. The video and the audio quality was the same (the panasonic might have been slightly better) so this was not going to be a deciding factor between the two. So then I went to the features of each machine for the comparison. The Toshiba 2109 had the zoom, bit meter, and black level features that I thought wasn't special at all. The Panasonic A120U had a quick disc read, resume play from where you last left off on a DVD when the machine was powered on again, and very easy chapter access from the remote control. The Panasonic did not have the sorry zoom or bit meter of the Toshiba but it also had the black level setting. Additionally, there was a nice menu bar at the top of the screen (so not to interfer with the movie view), a fast forward or quick access option, and an icon on the front display of the player which tells you if its in 2 channel Stereo or 5.1 channel. Based on the nice features of the Panasonic A120U I chose that DVD player. And to date I have not had any problems playing any DVDs (not playing, artifacts, pausing, voice sync) on this player. I have played DVDs from Columbia, MGM, Newline, WarnerBros, and 20th Century.

Strength:

Quick play, easy to operate, great value

Weakness:

none at this price

If you intend to buy a dvd player that the whole family can appreciate then this is the one. Has plenty to offer, all the needed outputs for the audiophile and if you are not then the basics are already there. Only downside is Panasonic does not supply the S video cable.

Strength:

Quick-play, multiple fast forward and reverse speeds.and overall dependability.

Weakness:

At this price there aren't any.

This is an excellent DVD player for the money. I find the Quick-Play feature especially nice. I haven't had one DVD that has not played correctly or had any problems at all. My CDs play much better than on either my Yamaha CD player or my Pioneer Laser Disc Player although in fairness both of these are over 3 years old.
