Strength:

Nice price, S-Video, dig. out

Weakness:

None so far

Have this hooked up to a 35" tube. S-Video makes a difference. No problem with the unit so far. I actually have the 701 model. Don't know what the difference between the 701 and 710. Sounds is fine through VMPS Super Towers. Pan view does not fill up screen. Don't know why I would pay $250+ for same features in another unit. We'll see.
DOES NOT INCLUDE S-VIDEO CABLE. Monster cable ran about $25.

Strength:

Excellent picture and very good sound quality; colorful remote which is not overly-complicated; features for the price, such as dual laser and dual digital outs; upgradeable

Weakness:

Poor layer shift; must use a TV in order to create audio program; misses first 1-second of song (returned for this reason)

I bought this unit because the Pioneer I bought was defective and I was attracted by the fact that this unit, while having the same features, is upgradeable. Compared to the Pioneer, this one had a noticably longer layer shift. Also, to create an audio program you must turn on your TV and do it onscreen if you want to see what you're doing.
I found the remote and loading speed to be quite acceptable, despite the complaints I've read about that. I thought it played very well overall and was easy to use. Unfortunately, I had to return it because of a defect which appears to be inherant. When playing an audio CD, the player will miss the first second (or half second) of the song. This made it impossible to use this unit as a source player for recording. I returned it to Circuit City and tried a couple disc on their display model. Guess what-- it did the same thing. So, I concluded it must be an inherant problem. For this, I'll have to reduce the rating, even though it plays movies great.
Now I have a Sony and so far it's superior in every way except for not being able to play CD-Rs.

Strength:

picture, sound and PRICE

Weakness:

slow and noisy mechanism

I had planned to buy more expensive Sony or Panasonic DVD-player, but when I saw the price of this product I couldn't resist... ...and I've gotta say that I'm quite satisfied!

The picture is clear and sharp (Panasonic 32" 100Hz widescreen), only in dark scenes there is some visible distortion.

5.1 sound (driven trough coaxial output) is crystal-clear.

Mechanism is quite slow and noisy - especially disk loading... for this reason I still keep my CD-player connected for music listening...

Strength:

Various outputs, including optical.

Weakness:

Went to sleep mode after 30 min. while playing CD-A.
Skips on CD-A.
Can't handle DVD scratches too well.

This is for the Phillips DVD-710AT, my first DVD player. It was a treat to see and hear DVDs even though we have a simple TV and stereo. The unit ran rather hot and emitted a plastic smell. The on-board display was too bright and distracted from movies shown in the dark. CD-A would stop playing after 30 minutes because the player went to sleep mode (it was sufficient to press a button on the remote to prevent this). Unit would not go to sleep at the end of DVD movies. Unit would skip on CD-As that played properly on other cd players. Not sure but I think the composite video signal suffered from 'swimming interferrence lines'. This unit was returned for a full refund, IMHO, it has a buggy firmware.

Strength:

Sound-picture are very good. Nothing fancy about this player ,But its a solid performer.

Weakness:

Remote control takes awhile to get use too.

Purchased as part of a Phillips surround sound package, This dvd player is a work horse, Has played my dvd,s and CD,s without any problems over the last 4 months. This system is hooked up to my Toshiba 27A50 27 inch TV and the picture and sound are great, Much more than I expected. If you,re looking for a basic but solid DVD player you,ll get a lot of bang for your buck with this one, PHILLIPS DVD711.

A few months ago I bought the Philips dvd-711. I experience the same problem as Bill Scheidt did: somehow the first (half) second of a song will not be heard. It only happens with the first song of a cd, in the shuffle mode and when I select a song with the remote. Finally I managed to get around the problem; the first (half) second will only be missed when the dvd is connected to my receiver with a digital (coax) cable. It doesn't occur with an analogue cable! So: maybe the receiver (Marantz SR-5000 (OSE)) doesn't work properly, or maybe there's a problem with the digital-out of the dvd player.

Strength:

Doesn't skip, holds your place for 5 DVDs, great quality for the price

Weakness:

remote only works for DVD player and not TV.

I have the DVD-711, the step up from the 710 and it is excellent. It is worth every penny. I have played over 30 movies on it in under 2 months and it has not given me any problems at all.
