Strength:

Cheap. Easy to return.

Weakness:

Picture freezes. Remote is totally screwed up and difficult to operate.

This Phillips player does a good job of creating a picture, but that's the end of the good.

The bad: The sound is poor. The remote is laid out completely upside down (you have to hold it in both hands to press play or pause). Worst of all, it will freeze at random times during playback.

I kept it for one day - then it went back to the store.

Sleek design; functional remote; plenty options for the price

Weakness:

great product for the money; excellent choice for a first timer; not a pinnacle of superb engineering

Strength:

Philips 711- Excelent picture and sount, easy to use interface, solid and reliable

Weakness:

no build in decoders, no mp 3 players

Two months pased from the purchase. No fault so far in playing DVD's and video CD's. Excelent image. The remote control which was dificyult to use in the first week becomes very handy. Excelent value for money.
I tried the capacity to plat video cd's, and writable and re-writable discs. No problem so far.
I would reccomend this to any basic DVD user.

Strength:

It's very cheap(price wise) Output is good

Weakness:

Earphones are really silly. Long Mp3 filenames don't scroll. Too battery hungry. Goes off without any power alarm. No backlight for the LCD Display. Can not delete chosen songs which are recorde on it

Hi!

Well this Grundig Mp-100 portable Mp3 player has this problem. I record 7-8 songs on the 32Mb multimedia memory card and after I delete them to make place for the new songs..I can still here bits and pieces of the old 7 songs which had deleted( not all but some of them).

THe Grundig support system is very bad. Instead I was expecting some support like Hp people. Their support is excellent and helped me solve the problems that I had with my Hp OmniBook.

Well Grundig-- German Technology --I thought it was supposed to be the coolest.but sorry to say without support and products with defect ---It sucks!!!

Sorry for the harsh words.

Cheers!~

Strength:

Superb image and sound, easy to access interface, dts output, plays CD-R and CD-RW, easy to use remote

Weakness:

No built in DDigital decoder, no MP3

I purchased this product because it was the only one having multiregion capacity. The price is quite high for a basic DVD player like this is. I played more than 20 DVD's on it from Regions 1, 2 &4 without any problem. No glitch and skipping problems.
I discovered a bug on the interface: after zoom if you do not press pan OK the disc will resume playing but without sound. In order to get sound you should access again zoom and press pan OK.
Another weakness is the lack of dinamic zoom. The static one is very good.

Weakness:

Remote

I must say I am quite pleased with this product. Had no problems with any of the DVDs I rented, or owned. Sound is great, with just 2 speakers, or hooked up to my Decoder. The S-Video out is a must, and after tweaking my TV with the TV-Tunning DVD I got for the hollidays watching movies is even more fun.

Worth every penny.

Strength:

(re-)writable compatible; 5 disc resume option; friendly
operation; no need to break the bank on this one.

Weakness:

noisy mechanism; volume drops 50% when switching directly
from fast forward to slow motion & play is resumed

Actual model used: Philips DVD-701

After hearing many horror stories about Philips' CD players, I was very hesitant to buy this DVD player.
But after having it for a couple of weeks, I must say the Dutch electronics giant delivered a very overall pleasing player at a very competitive price.
The only thing keeping me from giving it 4 stars is the design flaw that causes the sound output to decrease by roughly 50% when resuming play after having switched from fast-forward to slow-motion directly. The only remedy is to switch the player off and back on.
But overall, it does what it's supposed to do: play DVD's
The picture is pretty much prefect and the necessary features are present. As for the sound quality, that will
depend on my next pick for a receiver & speakers.

I can recommend this player to both HT newbies and audiophiles alike.

Weakness:

Remote, skipping problems

Beware. On the outset, this model seemed to be just what we want. It was even rated high in the Consumer Reports. I wish I could actually complain of skipping problems, but at certain points on the disc, the player just shut down! This was with brand new discs. I wouldn't reccommend this to anyone. Also during my trip back for store credit, I was greeted by a gentleman returning the 611. He had nothing positive to say.

Strength:

Plays scratched rental discs no problem. Has seperate laser pickup optimized for audio CD--really good sound. Great value.

Weakness:

Non-ergonomic remote. Zoom-in feature works on still frames only.

(This is actually a Philips DVD 711, not 710)
This is a no frills unit, but a very solid performer! Sears beat BestBuy by $10. Bought this player to watch rental discs on a conventional TV and 2 channel stereo. So far this player has been great--not a single skip or lockup! Very good picture using S-Video cable and, believe it or not, silky CD audio! A good bet if you want two disc players in one. Can't say I love the remote control, but I picked up a OneForAll "Video Expert" universal remote ($14) which includes DVD controls. It didn't fully operate the DVD out of the box, so I had to phone OneForAll to get program codes for the extended DVD features. They got me up and running over the phone and e-mailed an advanced code list for future use. All together, I got everything I wanted for $175 plus tax.
