Strength:

Plays everything thrown at it: DVD, CDR's, and best of all VCD's & SVCD's.

Weakness:

Remote is kinda weak, but tolerable.

Damn good price [$189] and seems to play any type of media I through at it. Others complain of noisy motor, but I haven't experienced it. I back up ALL my DVD's to SVCD format and re-author them in Nero 5.3 and they play perfect on 80min CDR's. I tried that on my friends Sony and all it got was an error message. Funny, I watch SVCD's more than DVD, because I'm afriad my kids are gonna scratch the originals! The remote is just OK, but not as bad as others I've seen. This is probably THE BEST DVD player in it's price range.

Strength:

plays 24/96 DAD music

Weakness:

build quality

Major problem right out of the box: the optical out port works intermittently. After about 1-3 minutes, the sound cuts out even though the DVD still plays on. I used a second optical cable and tested the first one on my CD player. Even made sure that both optical in ports on the DTR-7 receiver weren't the cause of the problem. All receiver ports and optical cables worked fine when tested on other products but every time I try to use the optical port on the DV333, it cuts out after a short amount of time. At least the ole fashioned patch cable digital audio out works fine so that's a short term workaround so that I can listen to 24/96 DAD audio material (I Robot by the Alan Parsons Project is available on DAD which is what I've been testing). Don't really know if there's any meaningful signal degradation in 24/96 format by going with patch cables versus optical.

Mail ordered from moreaudiovideo.com and they promptly provided an RMA. Will have to ship back at my expense but since the nearest warranty repair shop is 50 miles away, it's probably worth doing. I will come back and hopefully change my rating of this product later on after all of this is resolved. I hope this is a one time blip on what otherwise appears to be a great product for the money.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Sound Quality, CD-R, Speed

Weakness:

None

I work at an electronics store, selling DVD players and TV's. The most asked question I get is what is the best DVD player you have, now I can tell you that I play around with all the DVD players we carry, and this one is the best to me, the DV-333 by Pioneer. A feature I liked about the Sony's DVD player is that the menu fuction is on the front, along with the toggle fuction, so if you loose the remote, your not left with just play option, but the Pioneer makes up for that in sound and picture. The Sony will play only some (few) CD-R, but is very pickie about which ones. The twin Laser pick-up is the best, allowing all CD-R types. Also no region blocks (allowing to play all 6 regions on the DVD player is awesome. With the speed that this DVD player operates at, it is the best single disk DVD player I have every used (non-commercial).

Strength:

CD-R and CD-RW compatibility, great value

Weakness:

Fast-forward/reverse scan speed is fast (about 30X)

This is a great player for the money. Not only does it play standard DVD and CD disks, but also CD-R and CD-RW. Not all players handle CD-R and CD-RW disks: my previous Toshiba SD-1200 (also a year 2000 model) did not and moreover it showed pixellation at times when playing movies.

The only drawback that I could find with the Pioneer is that it does not have multiple fast-forward/backward (scan) speeds: it seems to be fixed at about 30X, although it is possible to "tap" the remote button lightly and quickly so as not to advance too quickly when desired. This is a minor point and does not detract from its overall performance.

When used with an amp with Dolby Digital/DTS built in, this Pioneer DV-333 DVD player produces great output and is in my opinion an excellent value.

Strength:

Price, Picture, Plays many various formats.

Weakness:

does not look sturdy, remote needs backlight.

I recently got this player.. after debating whether to purchase the DV-333 or the DV-434 from Pioneer. I opt to go with the cheaper DV-333 after hearing the horror stories with the incapabilities of the DV-434. Though I do wish I saw it in action with my TV. (Tosh CN36X81).

First Impression: The box is small.. and the unit fits nicely in the audio rack.. The dvd player looks nice.. but its going to be hiddle away.. so I was more interested in image quality. First impressions of image quality of not bad.. but i expected a much more sharper picture.. I guess my component video cables are not the greatest quality. I am aware of the quality my TV can display as I have seen the Pioneer DV-525 show an outstanding image on this set. So most likely my cables are to blame.

After watching a few DVDs.. I did noticed that the image was spectacular.. I had poor lighting and when I made the atmosphere better.. I must say the image was great.. I can only imagine what progressive players are doing for the image.. as the DV-333 image is very eye pleasing.

Some things that I did not like about it is the remote.. button size and all.. I am not too picky.. but I definitely would have likely it if it had backlight.. learing button position will occur overtime.. but backlight is something that I like.

More minor beefs?? Something that may not happen to you.. my DV-333 has a sticker on the left side.. pretty big sticker saying it plays dvds.. vcds.. and cd-rs.. I want to take that off.. its really tacky.

In summary: If you are looking for a beautiful image.. this player will do a great job... it doesn't have all the features like zoom and stuff.. but this player plays many disc formats... highly recommended.

Strength:

Fast Loading & Reliable, Not to hard to setup and use.

Weakness:

The Remote, Not the best design but it's funtional and after a few weeks of use you should be able to navigate it in the dark.

I need to start by saying I currently own about 300 DVD's and through my experience I have found some titles that are just buggy with certain players.I have thrown all of my problem DVD's at this little player and I got to tell you it works great. I have spun such disc as The Abyss, The Matrix, Godzilla, T2 Regular and Speacial editions, ID4, even Boogey Nights (well known for it's shimmering)I will keep throwing disc at it untill I see the need not to. I am very pleased with the players speedy operation. I read a lot of the post here and could not believe one little player like this would work so well thanks for all of your post. I am feeding an S-Video signal down to my Mitsubishi 50" and it's amazing compared to my cheap APEX, and even my old Toshiba. I can barley notice the layer changes on most of my movies. If your looking for a good player at a great price BUY THIS ONE!!!

Strength:

video quality and ability to play cdr's

Weakness:

looks cheap, remote sucks!

i really like my toshiba since it was a dual disc and its zoom features but it wouldn't plat cdr, and my cd player wouldn't either. however, the pioneer's loading, resume, fwd/rev were much faster then my toshiba and the video quality might be a bit better. my toshiba had problems with horizontal bands of green/red tints once in a while that were very annoying. i am not sure if i got a lemon or if toshiba's progressive scanning sucks. the pioneer had this problem on one dvd so far, but the dvd was a used one i had purchased at blockbusters so that may be the problem. Other than that the pioneer is great. its rather simple but thats not of too much importance since my a/v reciever takes care of rest. cdr playback is also a big concern of mine too, i heard pioneer and apex(i think thats the name) are the only ones that play cdrs. however, the latter brand is a piece of crap. hence, not remembering the exact brand name. the remote on the pioneer sucks, i really liked the toshiba's back lit large buttons and its joystick, but for 150 bucks less and the ability to play cdrs the pioneer's remote is a minor set back.

Strength:

Compact Design, Simple Elegance

Weakness:

Small remote

This is my first DVD player, but I used a friend's Phillips/Magnavox for a short time.
My system is all Pioneer and I have been a Pioneer-phile all my life. My current system may not excite too many reading this, as it is a Pioneer 4500s reciever, (dolby surround, older than Pro-Logic); JBL 2800 speakers; Pioneer 101 disc CD Changer; RCA Hi-Fi VCR; Pioneer Laserdisc player; and Zenith 27" TV. Not audiophile equipment by any means, but it is growing none the less.
I like the player already, although I haven't done the Matrix test yet. My reciever was pre S-Video, but the TV has an input so that cable will be the next purchase.
Best Buy had two units on a shelf that the sales guy didn't even know they had, and for the price I couldn't pass it up. Never opened, not returned.
I will give a review later after I have given it some shakedown time, and hopefully get the S-Video hooked up.

Compared to the Phillips machine, this machine is already on my good side by having good design, and ease of use. If you think this remote is small, go find an old Phillips and try to use that remote!

More later...

Strength:

Lots of features and low price.

Weakness:

Poor build quality.

Bought this DVD player on February 12th and it broke on March 21st. Since it is over 30 days old Circuit City won't exchange it. It won't eject dics. The tray opens but the cd or DVD won't come out. I had to pull the disc out of the machine. I bought the Toshiba 2109 in 1999 and haven't had any problems with it at all. The picture and audio quality is noticeably better on the Toshiba also. Another thing is that the Pioneer's drive is noisy compared to the Toshiba. I bought the Pioneer for it's ability to play CD-R's and VCD's. I wouldn't recommend this player to anyone.
