Strength:

cd-r compatible, optical and coaxial digital outputs

Weakness:

confusing remote

I've had this DVD player for nearly a year. The first one i picked up did absolutley nothing when i took it out of the box. So after making the trip back to circuit city, i got a new one and have had no problems with it. I use this DVD player with a Yamaha reciever with Dolby Digital and DTS, and it sounds great. The one feature that made me choose this player over another brand is that it can play CD-R/RW's which most others don't. This allows me to use it as a second cd player. My pioneer cd player is connectd to the reciever using an optical cord and the dvd player using a coaxial, and the play back from the dvd player in much better. The only think i don't like about it is that the remote is so small and the buttons are poorly placed. that makes it pretty hard to use it will watching a movie with the lights off. another small complaint that isn't really a big deal is that pioneer products are never the standard width. the components look a lot nicer together when they're all the same size, but that's not really a big problem.
This is the best DVD player you can buy for the money, and i highly recommend any pioneer dvd player to someone who's looking to buy one.

Strength:

Excellent video, fast loading, plays every format except DVD-Audio and MP3

Weakness:

Somewhat clunky remote, jerky FF and REV

A reader of my speaker reviews asked me to also do a review my DV-333, so here goes.

Current HT system:

Mitsubishi 35" monitor
Yamaha RX-V596 receiver
Pioneer DV-333 DVD player
Carver A/D 360 CD changer
Yamaha K-960 cassette recorder
Paradigm Monitor 90P mains
Paradigm CC-350 center
Paradigm ADP-370 rears

The DV-333 is an excellent entry level DVD player, particularly for those who want to replace their aging CD players and especially for those with a lot of CD-R and CD-RW disks, because this unit will play them all. The picture quality is excellent and the few problems I have had with it reading DVDs have all been traced to a problem with the disk, such as scratches or heavy smudges. The analog audio output is also very good and this unit would be a good replacement choice for low and mid level CD players.

There have been some comments that the unit is noisy, particularly during the disk loading process. It is true that during loading the tray mechanism does make a lot of noise, but the process is very fast compared to other players and IMO, noise during loading is a non-issue. I have not had any problems with noise during playback, but my unit is in a glass fronted cabinet. If you sit close to a unit that is not enclosed you may hear some spinning noise during playback.

At this price level there have to be some trade-offs made. Pioneer has created a low priced, exceptionally versitle unit with excellent video and audio, at the cost of a noisy loading mechanism, jerky scanning capabilities and a minimal remote. If your concern is appearence, the remote or watching DVD's in slow motion, pass on this player. OTOH, if your primary concern is getting the best video and most versatility for the fewest bucks, I consider the DV-333 to be the best deal available right now. The only way to get better video would be to upgrade to a progressive scanning player, but that means a minimum of US$600, vs. the now US$170 street price for the DV-333.

Strength:

Plays all DVDs, CDRs, CDRWs, SVCD, VCD that I have tried.

Weakness:

It would be nice if it played MP3s.

I bought the Pioneer DV333 because my Toshiba SD3109 wouldn't play CDRs. The Pioneer is a great bang for your buck if you are looking for low price, flexibility to read other media and formats. The remote sucks, and I agree the FF and RW features are poor, however, for my purposes, and considering the price, they can be overlooked. I'm giving it 5 stars based on value. Since the remote is poor and the unit looks cheaply made, I am only giving 4 stars for overall rating.

The next player I buy will have progressive scan capabilities.

Strength:

Picture quality, audio quality, plays cdr's, loading speed

Weakness:

none so far

I waited until after Christmas to buy this unit. Needless to say, it didn't go on sale. I'm assuming that the quality of the unit kept the price at $199.00. I went to several stores and the price was the same.

The DV333 is a great machine. I rented 30 DVD's and have had no problems with any of them. The DTS sound is awsome! I also notice that CD's sound better on this than on my old JVC. The picture is sharp and clear over my 45" projection TV. I have not noticed any disc noise as some posters have. It's been very quiet in both menu and playback modes. Although the FF and REV is jerkey, it's no big deal.

Considering the price plus the video and audio quality, I would highly recommend this DVD player to anyone.

The Pioneer DV-333 along with the Denon AVR-681(AVR-1601)receiver have done a great job of filling my 23x15 room with
quality picture and sound. I have used the S-Video connections and have gotten excellent playback from both new and rental DVD and music CD. I would highly recommend
it especially at the $200 price -great value.

Strength:

Plays CD-Rs, CD-RWs, VCDs *AND* SVCDs + great price

Weakness:

Poor ff/rew scanning, awkward remote, minor whirring noise during playback (varies depending on which DVD)

I was vacillating between this and the Sony DVP-S360 for a while, but I'm gonna keep the Pioneer because playing homemade VCDs and SVCDs is so great. When progressive-scan units that play DVD-RAM come down in price, I'll think about shelling out the Sony bucks.

I've tried audio and VCD burned to various cheap brands of CD-Rs and CD-RWs and everything plays in this unit, even some MPEG2 files that were apparently not up to the SVCD "standard" according to Nero. For $200 I have no major complaints about the DV333. Picture quality (i.e. color saturation, black level) was slightly disappointing, but the only other thing I've used was a Cinemaster card hooked up to a Sony Wega (not mine)--maybe I should get a better TV now. Haven't tried the DV333's component outputs yet but S-Video still looks good (seems to be some distortion on the composite/RCA output, though).

The menus are decent, as is the manual. I appreciated the Audio DRC (sound leveling), good for watching when everyone else is asleep. The remote is merely OK and forget about the front panel buttons. The worst thing about the interface is the jerky & difficult scanning modes, but I have to question how big an issue that is. There are small irritances, like the player not automatically selecting Dolby 5.1 when there are both 2.0 and 5.1 tracks on the DVD. And why does it change between composite/S-Video and component using a switch on the back?

From reading these reviews I was prepared for the playback noise to be horrendous. Honestly I might not have noticed it if I hadn't read so many complaints. Whether you sit far enough away or put the player in a TV stand with glass doors, it's easily dealt with.

Ease of setup, audio & video quality. Plays anything thrown into it.

Weakness:

None.

I'd planned on buying a Pioneer DVD and after reviewing all of the positive "press" the DV-333 got in this forum ( and others ), I decided to take the plunge into digital video. This review is actually for the DV-343, Pioneer's latest incarnation of their entry-level player. If this is entry level, I'd love to see what one of their Elite DVD players could do! This player is amazing. I would recommend it to anyone making their foray into the DVD market. Do yourself a favor though and buy good cables. All in all, a great player. The "setup" menu is extremely easy. I think even a technophobe could handle it :) Oh, and as a side, kudos to Pioneer for designing a GREAT amp remote. Not only can I navigate the usual DVD controls, but I can also access the DVD menu and select options. My DVD remote is tucked away in some drawer and will never need to be used unless I change some of my player settings.

Weakness:

remote, sorry to admit to it but the remote is C-H-E-A-P-O-R-O-M-M-A, Im considering a unerversal one

This is a very good dvd player at a reasonable price. It cost under sony's "half decent" dvd player and does the same features, pluse with a more reliable name. It has all the basics:dvd,cd-r,cd-rw,vdc. I got this baby for $130 open box, and the m.s.r.p. is $299. I strongly recommend this dvd player.
