I spent a significant amount of time researching which Prog Scan DVD player to get after my Sony 7700 up and died on me. After researching many forums, and opinions, it came down to the DV-37 or the Panny RP91. After seeing them both in action, I chose the DV-37 and I am quite certain I made the right choice. I have the Pioneer Elite 710, and the result is terrific.

As another reviewer quite accurately (and humorously) pointed out below, there seems to be a minor panic prevelant on various forums over the "dreaded Chroma bug" which supposedly affects this player. Well,I have to say that after viewing of many, many DVDs I cannot see evidence of it on this player. If someone were to specifically look on a certain frame somewhere on a certain movie, I'm sure they could talk themselves into saying they see it. But you've got to be kidding me, does this actually matter to anyone in real life? These people have got to get a life. I am not a casual DVD viewer at all. I am extremely demanding, and particular about picture quality - all aspects of picture quality. I must say that this is the SHARPEST, most accurate picture I have ever seen from a DVD player. Accurate tones, brilliant reproduction. I won't exagerate and say it "blew away" or was "far better than" the RP91, but it CLEARLY had a better, sharper picture.

I honestly didn't think I would use the many, many picture adjustments available with this player. But since different DVDs are of different quality, I do find myself using the DVD controls on certain DVDs to adjust brightness, contast, etc - and the DV-37 will remember the setting for the next time you view that particular DVD. A very nice touch.

The DV-37's ability to auto-output interlaced feed when a non-anamorphic DVD is playing is clutch also, since my 710 does lock into "full" screen mode when receving a progressive signal.

The menu is quite logically setup, and on top of it all this is a very nice looking DVD player ... yes, with the blue light :-)

Buy with confidence. This is a terrific player.

Value is in the eyes and ears of the beholder, and the dv-37 is nothing sort of a outstandihg value to behold.packed with lots of features and ajustments the dv-37 is a breeze to uses. quick navigation and fine video ajustments are a big plus. in the case of a problem dvd you can ajust the dvd and store it in memory after that, every time you play that dvd the dv-37 has memorized the settings and will play it back that way.the dv-37's color fidelity, shadow detail and contrast are top notch. the sound is tops as well, full smooth and warm. as a cd player it is very good maybe not (high end) but it defiantly get's the job done. I love using the dv-37 and I mean that, dvds always look outstanding Iam still blown away, and thats realy saying something after more than a yaer very highly recommended REVIEW SYSTEM--SOURCES-PIONEER ELITE DV-37--DISPLAY--PIONEER ELITE PRO 610--POWER AMP-- DENON 5800--SPEAKERS--AERIAL ACOUSTICS T10S,CC3B,POLK FI 500S--AR 12 SUB--CABLES ALL XLO INTERCONNECT ANE SPEAKER WIRE--MISC.--MONSTER POWER CONDITONER AND ROOMTUNE

    Strength:

Build quality, progressive scan with 3/2 pulldown, menu, remote is okay but not great

    Weakness:

Resolution only goes up to about 480 lines vs 540 for some of the better DVD players. No DVD-A or SACD support

Had this unit for a week to compare it to the Philips unit. Both have a good picture, but I couldn't come to a definite conclusion, as it is very difficult to find any real difference between the 2 watching different scenes on my Mits 55" HDTV.

I then ran the AVIA calibration disc and put each unit through some tests. I was able to confirm that the Pioneer only showed about 480 lines of resolution compared to 540 on the Philips. I also saw more artifacting on some tests screens than I did with the Philips. I do believe the Sage video chipset in the Philips is somewhat better than the one in the Pioneer.

On the CD side of things, both sounded good. I couldn't really tell a difference between the 2.

I ultimately decided to take both back, as Pioneer and Philips are coming out with units in the next month that will support SACD. The new Pioneer player (DV-47a) will support DVD, DVD-A, and SACD, while the Philips will not be supporting DVD-A, which is not surprising given the fact that Sony and Philips are behind the SACD format. Given that this unit usually retails for $800, I don't think it's that great a deal. For the $600 that I paid, it is more competitive, even though it doesn't have SACD or DVD-A.

This is a great replacement for my panasonic A320. The panasonic never worked right after I moved (probably bumped it at some point). Panasonic basically could not help me on the phone and estimated a repair between 150 - 250.00. For that kind of money I decided to put it inot a new progressive scan player. I looked at the marantz dv6200 and denon 2800. The marantz did not have any kind of picture control (ie color, saturation, black level, etc.). Even though I det up my tv with the avia dvd, I have heard that with some players you need to tweak the picture a little. I did not want to tweak the picture with the tv menu every time - so the marantz was out. I have heard the the Denon's had problems at first and many people had to return theirs for software fix's. That was enough to turn me away from that unit. The pioneer has great reviews and seems to be very reliable. Several dealers told me that for cd playing this was a better unit that the other two. Since my cd player is getting old, the pioneer should easily outperform it with music. To summerize the above:
    - Picture settings are easily adjusted and programmed into memory.
    - Well reviewed and seems to be reliable.
    - Very good musically (CDs).
    - Progressive scan mode is awesome!

The only down side is the remote has not backlighting. I imagine they decided to keep the quality of the unit high and sacrifice the remote to keep the cost down. Good choice!

I appreciated the below glowing review, but the one star rating really hurts the overall score- I guess it was unintentional?

    Strength:

    Outstanding picture quality, great Audio

    Weakness:

Remote is not great but functional. The joy stick is not easy to use, a minor negative.

Just purchased this unit to replace my Marantz DVD810. I thought the Marantz produced a great picture but it only had an S Video connection so I have thought for a long time I have been missing something. Fired the unit up within 15 minutes, calibrated it to my Mitsubishi 55807 using Video Essentials and was immediately impressed. The real fun came when I put in some familiar disks and saw colors and details I didn't know existed. Find it hard one could find a better picture then this. Even my wife was impressed and she could care less, but she saw the difference. Have auditioned all of the high quality units out there under $1,000 an am glad I went with this one. The review in Stereophile for Home Theatre was right on.
    This unit is recommended highly.

    Strength:

Fine, detailed picture. Excellent parameter controls for video tweaking.

    Weakness:

    slow remote response

After reviewing several progressive scan players, I decided to stick with the Elite DV-37. Although it didn't get a rave review in the DVD shootout, I still prefered its picture quality to others in the shootout. I also originally had the Sony 700P for a couple weeks, and while it has a fine deinterlacer, I just don't like the softer image it and many other players put out. Although Pioneer's more detailed picture can cause some ringing in certain areas, I found the video controls useful to help tame this problem. IMHO, the progressive output quality is among the finest I've seen on the market.
