    Strength:

Great picture, Pure Cinema Progressive Scan, Gorgeous looks, Warm sound on audio CD's, plays CD-R's and CD-RW's!

    Weakness:

Remote, Menu system is a little wonky, no auto 5.1

I bought this DVD player based on the good reviews that it has received in magazines and online. I went to my local retailer and checked it out and was impressed by the build quality and the performance of this player but he would not budge from $800. I then went online and found it for $650 shipped and bought it on the spot.

Upon arrival of this DVD player, I did not have a Progressive Scan capable display but I was not disappointed with the quality of this player. On Gladiator, I saw details that I had not seen with my previous Sony. Then I bit the bullet and purchased an HDTV ready widescreen and I popped in some DVD's to do a comparo: on the Mummy, I could nearly feel the texture on the clothing of the actors; the image was that clear. Other DVD's sprang to life: the Wedding Planner was crystal clear....there were many nice views of San Francisco and I was pleased wit the DV-37's performance.

A very important feature for me was to have compatibility w/ CD-R's and CD-RW's as I burn a lot of my own CD's and the 37 has not let me down yet. It plays everything that I throw at it with gusto. The CD sounds are also very nice and warm sounding, so this is a good budget CD player as well, in my opinion.

Overall, I am very pleased with this player and would gladly purchase again in a heartbeat....too bad the remote was not a little better thought out as the search buttons "stick" when fast forwarding or Reverse Searching. Also, I miss the Sony's ability to lock on to the 5.1 track as here I have to manually select it. Minor gripes, I know, but I want to have my cake and eat it too. You really can't go wrong with this player, so I recommend it if you have a Progressive Scan capable monitor or are planning to purchase one soon.

I am a film score mixer by trade. See my credits in Charlie's Angels, Miss Congeniality, Blue Streak, etc. I don't normally review products because a positive review can be seen as an endorsement, but this is a great product. Video quality is astounding with an HD-capable monitor, but since audio is my thing, audio will be my subject.

Clarity and depth are amazing for any player under $1200. In fact, detail rivals that of my (gasp) $3200 Wadia reference CD player. Easy connectivity, great built-in DACs, and overall build quality make this a great unit. No need to get "tweeky" like some of the other reviewers like to do here - this simply a great unit at a very good price.

    Strength:

Video quality, sound quality, build, tweakability, remote

    Weakness:

layer change is a hair slower than what I'd like

You must have a HD-capable set (480p) to really appreciate what this player can do. I have a Toshiba TW56X81, and I'm using a Monster Cable M1000v Silver component video cable. Video is silky smooth, and razor sharp. Any minor artifacts are from the source material. Sound quality is also superb.

Build quality is top-notch. Beautiful finish. Very refined.

I don't know why some reviewers think the remote sucks. I think it's one of the best remotes I've seen on a piece of A/V equipment. All the controls are logically placed, and are "feelable" (no need to actually LOOK at the remote as you're using it!). I can see how those who are less coordinated would think the remote is difficult to use. But to me, it provides excellent control.

To the guy that gave the 3 star review, I can almost GUARANTEE that he did not set up his player correctly. From the way he described the picture, he probably has it in interlaced mode. Read the manual buddy.

I highly recommend this player to those who can take advantage of its progressive (480p) output. For those who don't have a capable display, it would probably be a waste of money to purchase the DV-37. Look elsewhere.

    Strength:

480p output quality, audio output quality, build quality (separate compartments for video, audio, and power supply boards)

    Weakness:

Red chroma bug (afflicts all players except just a few)

This player certainly lives up to it's reputation and recent reviews (5 stars in March/April The Perfect Vision along witht the Ayre D-1, Camelot Roundtable, and Meridian 800-all of which are "many" thousand dollars more). Pioneer's Elite division obviously is applying all they learned in the LD world and to my eye this is the best image of "any" player available right now. It is the sharpest and has an almost totally silent background. The color balance is spot on! And the audio output is of the highest grade. Don't let the techy "geeky" people fool you into thinking there is a better player for the money in this catagory - there isn't. This player's original price was $1000 and now you can find them for much, much less. It has exactly the same specs as the new $ 2000 - DV 38A (which has the addition of DVD-A which is a totally "unknown" format and at this point will probably be shut out by SACD anyway). The better your display or projector is calibrated (ISF) the better this player will output for you. There has been a lot of talk recently in forums and some reviews about the red chroma (combing) issue and the lack of proper flags in DVD authoring affecting the performance of this and all old players using the Genesis chip sets. I, for one, would not worry about it too much. I ran this player through a grueling series of tests and never really saw much to be concerned with. Just because it doesn't do perfect on the test bench does not negate it being a really good player for the 99.9% of us who want just that-a good performer, at a good price, which is reliable, and made well. Most of the newer DVD's are authored perfectly and simply sparkle on this player. Buy this player - you will not be sorry!

This DVD player projects an awesome image and has loads of video parameters to tweak. I don't have a progressive capable monitor yet so I have not been able to test it's capability in that area, but based on prior reviews I'd say it shines in progressive scan mode as well. I've had it only for 2 weeks so I am still trying different video tweaks but so far the interlace picture is pretty amazing on my 60" Pioneer Elite RPTV. I got it for $475 at ebay and am very happy with it. The analog audio outputs for playing CD's sound great due to the LL conversion found in Pioneer Elite components. I've played about 10 DVD's on it and have not experienced anything negative about it's top rate operation....the audio and video have been stunning and the layer changes seem normal to me. I recommend this jewel to anyone even if you don't yet have a progressive capable display as me,,,you'll be ready when you do decide to go progressive. Thanks!

    Strength:

Awesome progressive output! Smooth, quiet operation, solid construction.

    Weakness:

slow layer changes, poor manual, tedious remote- maybe the cool blue light up front is too bright- can be a distraction.

Awesome picture when combined with my Pioneer DTV. Great progressive scan 3/2 pulldown- filmlike image in every way. Vibrant color, crisp sound. You really cannot go wrong with this unit.

    Strength:

    Excellent Picture,Great construction,Good 3:2 pulldown operation....price!!!

    Weakness:

Remote is lackluster, and the manual really does not do this product justice

This is a very well built dvd player. I waited to review it for 8 months so I could really evaluate it objectively. The picture that the DV-37 displays on my Sony KV-36XBR400 is astounding!!! The color palatte is exceptional, and it's features are fairly straight forward. The 3:2 pulldown operation for progressive scan is awesome. My friend has had a Denon 2800 since it came out, and I would put the DV-37 player up against his Denon 2800 in ANY category. The Pioneer's picture on a properly calibrated set just sings.

I mention the Denon because it is supposed to be the new big thing, but from what I have witnessed, anyone interested in the Denon really should demo the Pioneer. I am NOT a Pioneer fan by any means, but this is one great player. Highly recommended!!

    Strength:

Excellent Picture, fantastic feature set, unbelievable audio reproduction

    Weakness:

The dinasour special edition does lock up... this is not the fualt of the player however.

This is actually a progressive player that delivers value. The picture quality on my Mits vs-50805 is fantastic. The dinasour special edition does lock up, but only if you ran out and bought the first set of disks. I discovered that the recent released version of the special edition does not lock up. This is obviously a software problem, and not the fault of the hardware. I have this player hooked up to a pioneer elite dv-27 reciever, and the sound reproduction is amazing. I love this player and it is the pride of my system. I recommend it very highly.
