    Weakness:

Does not play all DVD formats

We are owners of a Pioneer Elite system, right from the receiver 39, amp m-10, CD ?, DVD and Pro 510 TV.

What is disappointing is that the DV-37 will not play all formats. We have played many on our Toshiba 2109, which we've have for almost 1.5 years. When we received our DV-37 and played the special edition for Dinasour, it froze. We thought it was a problem with the DVD and replaced. The brand new, never been played DVD, also froze. Next, we went to the dealer and played the DVD in the new 38A, no problem. What we did find out, is that the regular version of Dinasour plays in the 37.

What does this tell you? We are considering on purchasing the 38, if we can negotiate a good deal.

Awsome unit. Very filmlike in progressive mode. Replaced the Denon 2800 messed up unit I had for a few days. I love Denon audio, in fact I just purcahsed a new unit from Soundpros.com, but the Denon 2800 DVD player was a mess.

The Pioneer is a better looking unit, better sounding, and has better playback than the Denon...........
    Hands down.

Video quality, sound quality, & price

    Weakness:

    remote; weight

I was having a hard time to decide between the newer model DV-38A ($1350) & DV-37. For the difference in price and value, I picked up this DV-37 after all. After using it for more than a month, I must say that I'm satisfied overall.

I was told to put a thick book under the DVD player in order to get rid of the vibration caused by the light weight. Try it, and feel the difference.

I finally figured out how to have the remote glow in the dark. We have to have it expose to the light for a while, before it can glow in the dark.... what the...

    It's a good buy, and I give it a 5 star

    DVD playback, CD playback

    Weakness:

None, picture is so good that it distracks you from the movie your watching.

Was going to buy the new Sony DVP-S9000ES or the
toshiba 9200. Tested both and found that the piture was
just as good if not better than these. The sound playback was excellent with my old cd's, a bit warmer than the Sony and Toshiba. No DVD-Audio or SACD playback,
but with over 300 regular cd's in my collection and not much
new format available, it was the best choice for me. At 1300can, the Sony was 2500can, saved 1200can and never looked back.

This is a great DVD player. I can't agree more with the positive reviews. I have a Toshiba TW40H80 HDTV and the pictue is amazing. "Film-like" is the truth. Everyone is stunned by the picture quality. I set-up the TV with the Avia DVD. The features on the DVD are wonderful and set-up was a breeze. Can't recommend the player more.

    Just about nothing...

Pioneer ruled in LD for many, many years and their expertise is evident in their DVD products as well.

Being a Sony(ES) fan I was alittle hesitant to jump to Pioneer at first. But that was from pure stupid snobery!

Don't delude yourself. Pioneers DVD players WAY outperform Sonys DVD players in (at least) the following ways:

Colors are more striking (especially noticable with older films that might look even older on a Sony).

Films appear sharper not soft and fuzzy - (as on a my Sony).

The sound is much more dynamic and you can really hear dialog much clearer.

These Pioneer DVD machines play just about any CDR/CDRW you can throw at them (with the Sony's it always a maybe at best).

And the Pioneer DVD players work great with my Sony AV-2000 remote (no problem)...

    All in all great stuff!!!

    Weakness:

    The screen saver is WEAK!!
    Major video problems

For supposing to be a true progressive 3/2 pulldown player, this player has some serious issues. The audio was good, I used the coaxial digital output verses the fiber optic and it sounded great.... unfortunatly, the video was the biggest fallback. I am using a Sony KPXBR53300 series HDTV, and the picture is terrible. I also have a Yamaha DVD-C900GL DVD player, and that picture, beleive it or not, looks better than the DV 37. I dont know if there is some sort differance between my TV and that player that makes it looks like that, but its bad. I swapped out the player for a new one and it still looks like crap. You can sort of see a LOT of horizontal lines on the picture and the picture looks distorted. Where the black lines meet the picture in 16:9 ratio movies is bad also. There is about a 1/2 inch of a warm fuzzy line that divides the picture from the letterboxing. I have recently ran the Video Essentials DVD and also the Avia disk as well, and I had my TV fine tuned, so I really dont think that that is the problem. When I brought the original player back to Audio King, we hooked it up to other HDTV's as well and saw the same results. If anyone has any ideas on why this might be doing this, please email me and let me know what you think might be causing this picture problem.....or is Pioneer having issues with this player???? I know that they just recently had a shortage on this player and it took them a little bit to get this one out. Did they change any specs that would have effected this also???
I rate this player with 3's because i really have not had the best of luck with it, nor am I in anyway impressed. I did not do it to be a jerk! I hope you understand, theres nothing more frustrating than having a great peice of A/V equipment, and have someone dirt on it, trust me, I know!

JVC XV-D723GD - this player REALLY looked good, but this had some audio problems. About 1 out of 4 times you would play a DVD, it would loose audio EVERY 20 SECONDS, the picture was not effected, nor did it glitch, I would just loose the whole audio signal all together. I could see my RX-V1GL loose the DTS signal all together and jump back to Pro Logic mode, then back to DTS. I was using the coaxial digital output on that as well

    I can't find one.

I don't know how it can get much better than this in standard DVD format. I have this unit hooked up to the Pioneer Elite Pro 710 which has it's own awesome line doubler, but I have to say in progressive mode the combination of these two units makes for a remarkable home theater experience. Don't get me wrong, in interlace mode, it's fabulous. If you don't have a progressive capable TV, you will be very satisfied. The DVD player has the same line doubler that the 710 has and it looks very good. The picture is incredibly sharp with an obvious absence of jaggies and edge anomolies. Lot's of other features and benefits. I've been trying to find something wrong with it and frankly all you can really dis is the remote a bit. Easy problem to solve. Match this unit up with a great TV and you'll be set.

Finally!! after several months this units available for review here..First,as a big fan of the Elite line I do have some bias..However,before dropping close to a grand on a DVD player,I did my homework..And this player offers simply has an outstanding resume..(check out Etowns review by Stereophile editor)..This model replaces the DV-05 model,a THX certified unit that was very well regarded..However,it had some flaws,(noisy transport, very light weight contstruction)..The DV-37 doesnt have THX certification(why its price is about 1000 dollars),but adds tons fo features and performance advantages over the DV-05..I wont go into all of them,(see Pioneers web site for all the specs),but this model is a videophiles dream machine...This is a TRUE progressive player, incorporating 3/2 pulldown a feature that detects film or video movie transfers and adjusts for them accordingly. Also included is a VIDEP DAC twice as powerful as in passed models from ANY manufacturer..It also can output true 24/96 digital signals thru its digital outputs,(very few players can do this).....However,where this player really shines is as a movie player...viewing on a regular monitor the picture was just brilliant, and you have the ability to tweek about a dozen picture controls and store them in memory,or just let the players Pure Cinema mode do it for you...Viewing on a progressive capable monitor,in a word...AWESOME..Its no exageration when I say this is about as good as it can get until HD-DVDs and players become available...This model is solidily built and has a smooth and silent transport.A look inside shows seperate shielding and isolation of all components..How Pioneer can put so much into this player and keep it under 1000 dollars goes to show the technical ability of the engineers...This player will compete with players costing twice to three times as much..There are a few words of caution though..This model doesnt include gimmicky zoom,or offer multiple disc storage..So if your one of those types who is looking to tamper with the viewing of the film,or want a model that can store many discs look elsewhere......If however, you are looking for state of the art movie reprduction, elegant looks, silent operation and stellar performance this is your baby.....This model can be found on the web for between 729-899...I have yet to see it in local chains for under 999.99(at least here in CT)..Also,be sure to check out the full range of specs before you buy.......Even if you dont currently have a progresively ready monitor, this unit will be there for you when you do,and be prepared for a visual feast....
