Just a quick note.....

I purchased this unit a couple of months ago and have had none of the problems that anyone else here has experienced. I diod check the firmware version and this is what came up:

OSD SET.
Region: 1
Ver:2.284/4
AV1:3.32'C'

I think that this must be the latest version and takes care of all of the problems.

I highly recomment this unit for anyone.

An amazing unit at an amazing price.

I had purchased it at BJ's Wholesale at $329. I think this player has it all for that price (except maybe good looks). Great picture and sound, I watched 'A bugs life' 5 times over the weekend. One thing that is not available is smooth reverse slow motion. I recommend it to anyone looking for a inexpensive way to watch movies in DVD.

I've had the 414 for about six months and never had a problem with any of the 50 movies that I have. It offers a lot of expansion capabilities for the price and I've been very pleased with it.

Strength:

Great Picture, Great Sound, and Great Audio CD Quality.

Weakness:

The remote is kind of annoying, but hell, it's in the closet with the other 8 remotes. :)

I have been using my DV-414 for about 6 mo. now.
I have had absolutely no problems with this unit. The picture looks great on my 53" Hitachi SBX, and the sound is Excellent! Of course when you're running over 5000 WATTS on your DTS system, you probably won't be as affected by subtle little nuances. I haven't felt the need to isolate the player either. It sits on the TV and my Mitsubishi SVHS is on top of it. I have 2 18" EV Sub cabinets about two feet away getting 1100 WATTS, and it hasn't skipped once. I love this player and would recommend it to anyone looking for an entry level player. As far as the lip-sync thing goes, make your dealer hook it up in the store before you bring it home so you can check the ROM version and give it a little test drive.

Strength:

price, quality, sleek.

Weakness:

remote has tiny buttons.

I have this unit, it works very well. the colors are very vibrant. with video essentials, i have been able to get a very good picture on my sony 32". i never have had a lip-sync problem with mine or anything else that would make movie watching bothersome. as for the remote, it is sitting in a box with all the others since i have a homeproducer 8 remote. i havent seen this unit on sale since the newer 525 came out, but i would say they are pretty much the same unit. my cousin has one and he never complained. i have watched many dvd's (lost in space), over and over... never a problem. its a little light but that never seemed to be a problem. reviews have been good about it. the picture looks very hi-quality. if you are looking for a good deal, this or the 525 will be it. if you can spend more, go for the expensive ones.

Iv'e had my 414 for about 2 mos now. It's worked as well as I expected tofor 300$. The most annoying part is the weird lip sync problems I've seen
on a few disc's (Clerks, Full Metal jacket, Lost In Space, a few others
that I can't remember right now), and then most others it plays fine without
any problems what so ever. The remote also sucks, but you get what you pay for,
plus a programmable remote like the marantz takes care of that problem.
Build quality is also a bit flimsy and unimpressive.
I'll probably buy another player next year some time just because of the annoying lip sync problem on some of my favorite movies that I just cannot
put up with. But for now, it does a pretty good job, it could use some
improvements, but like i said, for the price, what more could you ask for?

I'll give it a 3 because of that stupid lip sync problem, if it didn't have that, I'd give it a solid 5 regardless of the cheap remote.

Installed complete new HT system in the last two days. Yamaha 2095, two NHT Super Two's, three NHT Super One's, JVC 3500u and the Pioneer DV-414. Everything is great except the 414. Very first DVD played, Twister, has the lip sync problem. Only other DVD I have, Blade, plays fine.
We'll it's Sunday and I can't call the dealer today; but I will tomorrow. Very, very disappointing. Especially so since my Pioneer LD player has performed flawlessly for four years.

I bought the Pioneer DV-414 recently March 1999, I triedL ost In Space and Urban Legend, what do you know, piece of shit has lip sync. I returned it the next day and gotten a refund. I took the money and ordered on a Sony DVP-S550D for 369.99 instead
I cant believed people are giving it a perfect score on the Pioneer DV-414, how can the shit ass player be perfect if it has lip sync
