Strength:

Affordable DVD player for both DD and DTS.

Weakness:

Won't fast forward through warnings.

Good value for the money. Had to send back the first one I got though because it simply wouldn't recognize the DVD disc. It would only play CDs. The replacement works great and haven't had any problems. Compared it to my friends Sony 7700 and the video quality is close and the audio is a bit inferior, but for the money it held its own.

I've had my 414 since January and have had no problems with it at all no lip synch no lock up.I have played over 80 different DVD's in it and have also used it for cd's which is probably it's weakest point It just doesn't have a good sound for cd's but I have a Yamaha cd changer for those anyway.I don't have any problems with the remote other than it would be nice if it was lit.

Strength:

Great Value! Picture quality, Ease of use, beautiful dd. Outstanding performance for buck!

Weakness:

would of liked blue light a bit larger

I have had this little unit now for a while and have rammed about 100 to 150 dvd's through this thing even the dreaded Lost in Space and Blade, all I have to say is that I have never noticed or seen the lyp sync problen. Although my unit may have been part of the new batch that people report, you can get your firmware updated to the newest version, just call there office and complain a little. The unit outputs great DD,DTS,it has 96/24 and the picture quality coming through the s-video input on my TV is great, the remote once you get used to it is quite good, just improperly laid out to be of caliber performance. Its not the best there is in the dvd world but then again if we all had thousands to spend we wouldn't have bought this unit, for the dollars I paid and the quality I've got I'm very pleased. The overall apearence of the unit is good the gui is not the best, and the dvd spinner is noticable but once you get to listening levels of movies you don't hear nothing. I would be interested to know the firmware version in the elite series of DVD players pioneer puts out. In closing very happy and had enough money left over to buy a few more toys

Strength:

Excellent image quality, very good sound, nice price.

Weakness:

Remote control and access to some features could be made more clear. But for "normal" (not the features lover) view, this doesn't come to be a big problem.

I bought my DV 414 last Christmas. It's plugged to a Sony TV. All I can say is that I love to movies on it. The quality of the image is really impressive. On computer generated movies like Toy Story (1,2) or Bug's Life you can easily believe you're o a theatre. The quality of the colors it produces is amazing. Turn on the cinema mode, which adds more deep to dark areas and, with a bowl of popcorn you're at the best place of the best cinema in town. I've seen some Sonys, Gradientes (brazilian manufacturer), Toshibas and Philips but wouldn't exchange my DV 414 for any of them.

Strength:

It was $249.95 at a Best Buy. Thought with the way the format wars will heat up this was a better investment then paying much more at this time.

Weakness:

Only noticed a lip sych problem on the first Austin Power dvd.

I think this unit was a great investment for the money. It not only plays many music dvds for me, (Eric Clapton, Tom Petty etc) but also movies like the James Bond series. I especially love the music from cd's too.

I have heard some people have had problems with this unit but not so much here.

Like any product sometimes you will get a lemon. The next one off the shelf might be better.

Strength:

Sharp picture, passes DTS signal, very affordable

Weakness:

remote, short pause between layer changes

I purchased this unit in early '99, and it won me over right away. The picture was very sharp and it had all the features i was looking for at that time. With such a affordable price i purchased my second unit later in year for the bedroom:)

Great buy!!!!

Strength:

Easy to use. Plays EVERYTHING. I like the remote. Enough outputs to last me awhile. The blue light when playing DVD's. Can pass the PLUGE pattern.

Weakness:

Fast forward and reverse not see helpfull when looking for a scene.

If you were wondering, I have not owned all those units listed above, just used them at family or friends' houses many times. Out of all of those, and my DV-414, I still like mine the best. First of all, it plays all my DVD's. The Toshiba wouldnt play Gladiator, American Beauty, Independence Day, and others. I think the 414 is easy to use. The remote, albeit small, is just right. Who needs a glow in the dark remote all that much anyways? If I want one, I'll buy a Marantz or Sony remote. As far as performance, flawless. Never have I had a problem and I use the thing everyday for CD's and DVD's. The image is crystal clear on my Sony 27" V-series Television. Speaking of which, I used this DVD player in conjunction with Video Essentials on DVD to calibrate my set. Now it looks twice as better. The ability of the 414 to pass the PLUGE pattern helped me get dead on brightness settings (take that Sony). In any event, if you ever see this puppy brand new or somewhat close to it, GET IT. If not, get any pioneer made after it (they are all about the same).

Strength:

Good sound, picture.

Weakness:

Lip sync. DVD tray is slow.

I've had two 414s. The first (manafac date Jan 99) I had for about six months and put up with the lip-sync problem assuming it was something else to do with my set-up or bad disks. When I found out that other people had the same problem, I returned it to Circuit City for warranty repair. They made a couple of token efforts to "realign" some stuff inside, but couldn't fix the problem, so they have me a new one (manafac date June 99) which I was told would be made late enough to not have lip-sync issues. This one was just as bad. So I returned that too.

Now have a JVC XV511-BX. No lip sync there, same price and v. happy with performance.
