Remote I've had this player for over 3 months. I really like the quality of the DVD vs Video and even Laser Disc. I have not seen any issues with Lip Sync or software in general. I have played movies such as the Matrix, Lost in space even older version of dvd's, like the Running Man and have had NO PROBLEMS. I would recommed this product to anyone looking to buy a dvd player. Strength:
Ability to play original and CDR VCDs
Weakness:
Remote is ugly I've never had a problem with my Pioneer DV414. I've had it since September of 1999 and it is still running strong. The optical and coax digital outputs work flawlessly (tried them both) for both Dolby Digital and DTS sources. The remote is clunky, but I use my Palm Pilot to control my home theater and made my own control with OmniRemote software. The file for Omniremote to control the DV414 has been uploaded to http://www.coolremotes.com (http://www.coolremotes.com/pdb_files/PioneerDV414_DVD.pdb) |

Strength:
Great DD/DTS audio, fantastic video, rather inexpensive for its great quality as a DVD Player
Weakness:
not a good replacement for a CDPlayer since music sounds bland After 8 months, all I can say is WOW! this has been one of the best investments I have made and after 30 DVD's I have noticed none of the problems previously posted (i.e. Lip-synch) |

Strength:
Great performance at a great price. For those not worried about all of the "videophile" bells & whistles, this machine will MORE than satisfy you!
Weakness:
The remote could have been designed better, and it would've been great if it afforded the user the ability to see the buttons in a dark environment. Disc does produce some excess noise while spinning, but it's not nearly as bad(in my honest opinion) as other reviewers have alluded to. As an introduction to the world of DVD, this first generation player from Pioneer has now given me nearly 4 years of wonderful service. Granted, this is NOT a super high-end model by any means, but for a stripped down DVD player, it exhibits great performace. Hooked up to my television set using the component video connection has yielded wonderful images, especially after I made some television adjustments using Video Essentials. Actually, this DVD player looked SUPERB even before the Video Essentials treatment, but that helped even more. I plan to upgrade to a progressive scan DVD player in the near future, but for the years of great service this machine has given me, I thought it deserved to be reviewed accordingly. |

This player is great for the money. You can find it for as little as 299. There is no other player that coomes close for the money. This way if something changes over the next 1-3years you wont feel bad about putting this in a second room and upgrading. Besides the picture and sound are great. The only negative is the remote which has no backlight. I have it hooked to a Sherwood Newcastle R945 MkII with paradigm speakers all around. The picture and sound are great 5 speakers. Also check out the review in this months SGHT. |

I too noticed the problem with the sound and video not matching while watching Suicide Kings. I thought it was the dvd's faultiness, but now I'm going to have to check for the problem in other movies.Otherwise, this system has excellent picture and audio quality. I had a panasonic A110 for a while and I think this one definitely performs better overall. In addition to all its cool features, it can also play recordable CD's. This is a plus since half of my CD's are recorded through my computer. |

Strength:
DD/DTS 96/24 capabilities. Nice picture too
Weakness:
Short pause on layer transition/remote I have had my 414 for almost 2 years now and I am happy to own it. I have the horrible firmware version, probably the first, and I haven't noticed anything yet. In fact, I have had it this long and have never heard anything on the whole lip sync problem until I checked out this web site a few months ago. I knew if I didn't noticed by now, I would never notice. Yet, having the knowledge lead me to testing with the boss scene in the Matrix and I can see maybe a slight off set, if any at all. I wouldn't deter anyone from picking one of these bad boys up. They are great for the price and I think they are one of the best around picture and sound quality wise. Even Home Theater mag rated it nicely. I'm hanging on to mine until it dies. I'm only giving it 4 on the value because of the remote...that could be better. |

Strength:
Simple Use, Great Video, Optical and Coaxial Digital Outputs
Weakness:
Remote buttons are hard to see with the lights dim I don't think you can go wrong with this player. I have had it over a year now and have never had any trouble playing any DVD. Even some that were severly scratched and dirty. Great video and audio output. Nice looking player. Remote buttons could be labeled a little brighter for dim lighting and the buttons are a little close together. But not a big enought problem to not buy it. Price, audio and video quality
Weakness:
Remote control I think it is important for people to realize there are two versions of the 414. Sometime in 1998, Pioneer made some corrections to earlier problems. So, peopel who had the earlier version are often disappointed with this unit. |
