Strength:

Plays CD-Rs very well, and has very good sound even on an old tv.

My family has had our DVD player for over a year now, and we have not been disappointed. I play Cd-Rs and cds on it occasionally, and it sounds as good as our computer speakers(harman/kardon). We've never seen any lip-sync or experienced any freeze-ups. The picture is very good, though I wouldn't know the qualities of the others since this is our first and, it seems, our only DVD player for a long time. The remote is easy to use and the manual is easily comprehensible.

We have played many DVDs on it, and we have never had any problems. This is a very good DVD player, and it is a bundle of value. I recommend this to anybody that is looking for a nice DVDplayer, even though this may be outdated now.

I have no idea yet if it will play mpeg files on a c-r disc, so if anyone knows this can be done, please e-mail me.

Strength:

Good Price

Weakness:

Setup menus of audio/video options a little confusing

I have been using this for about a year now, and I am really happy with the unit. I have had no problems at all playing any disk.

Strength:

Price.

Weakness:

Just about everything else.

This is used as a 2nd player located in the bedroom. I originally bought a Samsung, but it was defective so I returned it and bought this one based on price and features. I cannot say that I have been happy with the purchase. When it works, it performs in an acceptable manner with a picture and sound output that are good. However, the dvd's themselves must be pristine. Even the slightest smudge or fingerprint, and the disk becomes unplayable. That would not bother me that much, but combined with probably the most useless remote control I have ever owned, I would not buy this player again. The remote is probably the most unergonomic piece of junk I have ever owned. It makes a great case for aftermarket "all in one" learning remotes. Because of the relatively low price, I suppose it represents a fair value, but having to use this particular remote detracts from the overall rating.

Strength:

Good bang for the buck. Able to read CDR's and CDRW's.

Weakness:

none yet

Although some have mentioned lip-sync problems, I have yet to encounter them. Another plus is its ability to read CDR's and CDRW's. I want to convert old videotapes to VCD's and not many DVD players can read a CDR.

For the price you can't beat this machine.

The pioneer 414 is the best deal in audio electronics and a great video player too boot. As its on close out this fall (1999) making room for the new model it’s a steal! I purchased a Pioneer DV 414 from a big box store for $299. The sales person tried to talk me into an inferior model, presumably because they know this stock is going to move anyway! It is also available on line at: http://www.audioadvisor.com

I had read many review on its music quality when matched with a separate component DA converter, but little info was available on using it directly to play music. So here is a review:

In comparison to my Marantz CD17, while playing identical CDs, the sound of the Pioneer is just a bit brighter and less detailed, with slightly poorer imaging. However, when I put in a 96/24 DAD disk the Pioneer shined! What it lacks in pure A/D conversion ability it more than makes up for when the source is 96/24. The sound was holographic, far superior to CD sound, with great imaging. The Dynamic range and realism was impressive. Sara K’s opening base (Chesky records DVD171) was transported into my room! With Classic Records Ravel (DAD1025 ) the symphony assumes a true 3-D presence that I’ve never experienced even with vinyl!
So you don’t really need a separate D/A converter to enjoy this player.
But I’m going to eventually get one anyway! (In the mean time I’m going to spend my money on music disks!)

It looks good it sounds good and it is a great deal on it what all can you ask for. DTS is not on all dvd players some as twice as much don't have it but this one does so it really is good

I have had the DV-414 for less than a month and have watched 2 movies on it with no problems. I bought it for 305.00 and own Austin Powers & Ace Ventura. If your looking to buy a DVD player I recommend this one because it is easy on the wallet and gives great peformance. Next year we may see DVD players that record so I wouldnt bother paying a lot of money for one until then. The remote has small buttons but it doesnt bother me after I hit play.

I bought a Pioneer 414 based mostly on the fact that is one of the few that will play CD-R and CD-RWs. Also it has gotten very good reviews here except for those that had a problem with lip sync. I thought that the lip sync issue was solved in newer machines, so I discounted that. However, after a weekend enjoying several movies, the lip sync problem popped up today while I was watching "The Last Days of Disco." It was near the end of the movie (Ch.19 and 20). I am a little suspicious that it might be the disc though. It is a dual sided disc that has widescreen on one side and pan/scan on the other side and the lip sync problem occurs in the same spots on both sides. I might check it out on antoher player to make sure. Are certain discs faulty in this way? Or is it the player?
