Strength:

Plays CD-R, great picture

Weakness:

Remote, menus

I love the picture compared to the Samsung, looks crisper plus colors are nicer. Can't see too much difference between this and PC though (have SVHS between TV and PC) but then again both DVD players are made by Pioneer. The Samsung did have a better remote, plus the menus aren't entirely intuitive on the 525. Can't change from 16:9 (default) to 4:3 letterbox unless the DVD is stopped, unlike PC. Nothing wrong with the price though, got it for $180 (same price as my DVD-ROM & DVD decoder card for PC, except my PC doesn't have remote).

Strength:

-Video/Audio quality -Cost -Design -CDR -Compability

Weakness:

-Loud -No zoom

This is a f*cking great DVD player! Plays all DVDs, even the most demanding ones like "The Matrix" smoothly. There are unfortunately some issues because of the very loud tray, but this is not noticable when watching a movie - and can be solved by moving the player into a closed cabinet. The sound and video quality is extremely good, and the audio quality is so good, it's just as good as a CD player when playing CD's, if not better.
Highly reccomended!

Strength:

Good sounding and looking yet affordable; 24/96 capable

Weakness:

Too lightweight for a DVD/CD transport

Thanks Ted for the tweak web sites. I am using DVD-525 with the CAMELOT Dragon 5.1 which makes for a much better sounding transport.

Strength:

Ease of use; picture quality; cost

Weakness:

Remote not backlit; Construction material seems a little questionable

After doing some research on DVD Players, I decided to on the Pioneer DV-525. What a great little machine for the price ($212). The picture is clear and crisp and it plays the Matrix DVD, which I have heard can be a challenge for some DVD Players. I did not invest in a better(?) player, because I believe this technology is still evolving - i.e. Recordable machines are right around the corner. I am therefore very happy to see that my decision has paid off and I got something that I can use.

Since this is my first dvd player, I did some research
and came with this puppy which has twin lasers. I was very
pleased with picture quality thru my Toshiba Cinema Series
36" direct view TV.

Strength:

1. Wide range of formats supported, even CD-R
2. Dolby Digital and DTS out
3. Optical Audio-Out
4. Best price for the value

Weakness:

1. Disc tray is noisy when opened or closed.
2. Remote looks quite cheap.
3. Remote buttons are too small.
4. Too many buttons on the remote.
5. Dull looking menu.

The tray is noisy when opened or closed. But hey, you don't listen to anything when opening or closing the tray.

Some people complained that the disc spin was audible. Well, I couldn't hear a single hiss even on cheap VCDs. Perhaps, I am a bit lucky.

The remote control isn't perfect but remember that some pricier models of other brands have equally clumsy remotes.

The menu could have looked better with color. Menu characters are too thin and fine to read. I could prefer a bolder character set.

Anyway, none of these arguments can make me regret buying this great player. Along with a good low price, it has all the options that a casual listener like me would need ... That may explain why this model is a best seller in many countries. If you don't want to spend a lot of money and still don't miss a thing, simply go for it !

Strength:

Excelent picture and sound quality, Small price tag

Weakness:

Pauses at layer change on certain dvd's and occatonal sound drop out

Well i am rather happy with this unit like i said it does have exccelent picture and sound quality and for that i am very happy with the unit. i had no sound problem till i got a optic cable (only cheap one) now in digital modes the sound drops out on certin movies so i am putting that down to the cable not the unit.

I have it connected to a JVC RX888 RBK receiver and truelly awsome sound out of it.

I have had NO tray noise from my unit except for the usual open and close noise which you get in most units.

The remote is small and clumbsy but once you have set the thing up you only need to use the directional keys, enter, play, pause, stop and skip << & >> so who cares about the remote? and if you are that picky about it go get a universal back lit remote.

The only other problem i have is that the unit (like most PIONEER stuf) is rather small in depth (front to back)and it dose not suit the other components i have, but once i get a H/T Unit to put it in i or anyone else will notice it, and the rear feet on the unit are rubber stands not the alloy feet like the front, but now i am getting really picky arnt i. Just it would be nice for PIONEER to sppend another couple of dollars to finish of the exterior of the unit nicely dont you think.

ALl in all a very good unit that i wound recomend to any one.

Value for money you cant go past this one.
