Strength:

Picture/sound quality, price, ease of use

Weakness:

remote

I've been using this player for less than a month. I haven't experienced any of the problems that some reviewers have listed. So far the picture and sound have been great. Set up is fairly simple considering that this is my first dvd player and figured things out without using the owner's manual (it's more fun to play with the menu than read). I agree that the tray is a bit noisy when loading and that the remote should be backlit, but for the $215 that I paid including delivery, it's a hell of a deal. Not too many players out there with all the hookups that this unit has for the $.

Strength:

Price, Plays CD-R's

Weakness:

A bit noisy, Remote could be better (but it's not that bad), Display is rather plain.

Overall I'm quite pleased with this unit.

For the record, I also noticed the sound problem while viewing "Double Jeopardy" that some others have noted in this forum. I didn't notice the counter going crazy before hand but it's behind a door so I wouldn't have seen it anyway.

I have not had any problems with this unit. It has played every disc that I have put into it. (I can't say the same for the Samsung, which is why I returned it). I have had no lip synch problems either (The Samsung DID have lip synch problems which is another reason I brought it back)

I have noticed a little bit of noise while playing the disc, but in my opinion it's marginal. And since I have the unit inside of my entertainment center I can't hear it at all.

There are two places that I felt the samsung beat this unit. First the remote of the Samsung is far superior to the Pioneer. Second the Display on the Samsung was much sexier. I find the diplay on the Pioneer to be rather bland. Simple orange letters/numbers. There isn't even a light that comes on when a DTS disk is being played. However these two issues are inconsequential when looking at the big picture. This player is simply VERY good at what it does.

As I said earlier, overall this unit is great and I'm very happy with it.

I paid $250 for it at Tweeter which seems to be about the average price. It looks like some have found it cheaper online, but I don't mind paying a few extra dollars for the piece of mind that I can bring it back to Tweeter without any hassles.

I have had no problems with this player. No noise at all. I bought a second unit as a gift and that player doesn't make noise either. You guys that complain about noise must have some sensitive ears. I just bought a HD satelite receiver - now that is noise, it sounds like a VCR is taping even when it is turned off. If you are reading these reviews to decide to buy - just buy it. Based on my experience you wont regret it and you can't beat the price for the features.

Strength:

Can play CDR's and price.

Weakness:

Noise from the unit itself when playing and remote.

Got this unit for $189 from ubid.com and it's well worth it. I can say that you can't ask for more in this price range. I had a toshiba and sony before and my previous sony (530D) sounded beter than this pioneer with my 555es a/v reciever. But for the price you can't find anything wrong with this unit. The only reason I went with this is the ability to play CDR's.

I submitted a review almost a month ago. In the 1st review, I was complaining about the noise. But strangely enough I heard less noise coming out from the player now, Espeacially when playing CD, the play is very quiet. I think the player needs time to break in.

Strength:

Very clear picture, great sound, CD-R, CD-RW

Weakness:

a little noisy

After doing weeks and weeks of on-line research I finally decided to get this one over the Panasonic A120 because of its ability to read CD-R/RW's and the great reviews in this forum. I was looking for a quality entry-level dvd player and this one was perfect as i got it new on Ebay for 180 bucks! I just got it this past Friday, but my friends and I have already watched Matrix 3 times, Heat and Aliens once, and countless Hong Kong kungfu flick VCD's (whose quality were suprisingly good!) and everything has played perfectly. Video/audio quality is awesome, even though i'm only using the RCA video/audio out to my 27" Mitsubishi and pro-logic Kenwood shelf system. Of course, I don't have anything to compare this to except my vcr and cable broadcast output but...:)

I don't see what the big deal is about the remote. Sure it's not perfect, but i'm watching the movie on the screen, not constantly pressing buttons! Unless you are are a remotecontrollerphile, the remote is perfectly fine for a remote!! The player is a bit noisy when playing a disc though, and sounds (as my friend described it) like a bunch of "angry crickets". But with the stereo volume up loud, who's gonna hear?

I highly recommend this player as a great entry/mid level player!

Strength:

Good quality picture w/500 lines of resolution. It also has S-Video, Coax and Component Video out. DD & DTS compatability.

Weakness:

I have noticed some drive noise when the sound is low. Other than that I haven't had any problems.

I am using my DVD in conjuntion with a 32" Toshiba TV with S-Video inputs and a Pioneer VSX-D608 receiver using an optical link.

Other than the aforementioned drive noise this is an excellent DVD player. Other players might offer options such as a "zoom" function, but I wouldn't use that anyway. I am also using this a my CD player since my entertainment center does not have room for both. The sound is as clear or clearer than my Sony CD player.

I bought my DVD player for about $250.00 after a $50.00 rebate. With the 5 free movies, it's almost free.

I compared this to other higher end models, but they didn't offer any more value or useable options.

Strength:

low price, good picture and sound quality, ease of set up, plays CD-R and cd-rw!!!

Weakness:

the remote control (buttons are too small),the unit could be better looking

I bought this unit in last september and I was really surprised by the picture and sound quality for the price.
I was hesitating between the sony330 , the toshiba 2109 ,
and this one, I finally chose the dv525 and I do not regret it! The set up menu is very well made. I've watched a lot of movies with it and never had any problem, in fact I had only 2 little glitches and they were originating from the DVD disks( at least I hope so). I never had any lipsync problem. As for the the noise everybody talks about I just can't ear it. For sure do not expect perfection from this dvd player( it is far from a high end unit) but for the price I think it is the best you can buy.

Price and Performance

Weakness:

none so far

I picked this unit up a week ago and have watched 4 movies. (not counting the pokemon video that came with it) I got it for $266 and change from Circuit City. The $50 rebate puts it at a nice final price. The 5 free movies and 13 rentals don't hurt either.

So far, the picture and sound have been excelent. No complaints. I like it enough that I purchased a second one yesterday as a Christmas gift for my mother. Now that's an endorsement! :-)
