picked one of these up off EBAY for $20.00, to serve as a stand-in for my TOTL ELITE DV-09
which is suffering an issue in it's power supply circuitry.

the DV-606D has so far proven itself a worthy substitute, with a healthy, meaty sound quality
and perfectly acceptable video output. these older DVDPs tend to seem to be rather slow to load,
and most people blame that problem on the player's age.

in actuality, these older units have much more robustly built mechanisms than the majority of today's
DVD/BDPs, and the mechanisms, generally of the linear laser pickup on guide rails variety,
generally require a good lubrication to function at their optimum, and the manufacturers tended
to use lubricants VERY sparingly during the construction of these players in the factory,
and, after ten years that cheap lube tends to really show it's inadequacies.

the solution, of course, is to pop the top bonnet, and hand lubricate the entire mechanism again.

use WHITE LITHIUM GREASE on all gearwork. a generous dollop on each gear, and work it into a few
of the teeth with a flat-tip screwdriver.

next, get some LIGHT MACHINE OIL, and drizzle some along each of the two laser guide rails.

finally, actuate the entire mechanism several times to fully distribute the lubricants.
OPEN/CLOSE the disc tray several times, and load a CD and skip through all the tracks
several times as well, to prime those guide rails.

in sum, the result should be a very healthy, fast-acting player, better than when new!!

Strength:

Does everything/and has everything that more expensive models have. Easy setup/excellent picture quality.

I have used this dvd player for about 2 years and it has been nothing but pleasure. Picture quality is incredible and component video outputs are definitely a plus. Has built in decoder, although I am not using it now. Has dts output and everything else. I have no problem recommending this to anyone. I still don't regret paying 500 for this unit when it first came out--I don't see any reason for upgrading anytime soon. You won't regret buying this unit.

Strength:

Sound, Picture, Looks, Dolby Digital Decoder built in, great features.

Weakness:

No DTS decoder built in

I pretty much had my share of problems with this unit as reflected in my old review. This unit had been to the service center approximately 3 or 4 times. Within this time period I bought a RCA RC5220P to tide me over. The RCA was a pretty good player, but could not compare to this unit in the least. Well to make a long story short Pioneer has finally replaced the Unit with a brand new DVD player. Dispite all of he problems that I had with this unit I must say the sound quality and the picture as well as features are GREAT. Oh and good for Pioneer. The approval meter has gone way up on this model. I am giving it 5 stars. Be careful when you purchase these players. Only a selective fewhave 12 month waranties from the manufacturer. Pioneer had 12 months and the RCA RC5220P had only 90 days warranty.
Although the RCA was a pretty good unit it failed in the sound category. The pioneer,s sound was much more vibrant and clear. The RCA was sort of washed out. The pause between dual layer play is also faster than the RCA. My wife bought this for me for christmas for $599. I know it is still available and should be considerably less. If you can get this for a good price I say get it. Of course there is better out there, but for the price and the features you can not go wrong.

Strength:

Dolby Digital Decoder, Ease of Use, Excellent Picture

Weakness:

CDR Play

I bought this unit when it first came out and have enjoyed many a movie from it. The sound is first rate as well as the picture, the remote is excellent. i bought a new Sony DVP 650d player with DTS and Dolby Digital built in, but the picture was annoyingg and the setup a pain so I returned it and bought a Pioneer Elite receiver with both decoders built in and have not regretted my decison. Highly recommended. Have it connected to a 36 inch Toshiba Cinema Series TV.

Strength:

Sound,Seperate video settings, ability to disable macrovision for use on projection tvs.

Weakness:

The built in Dolby Digital decoder has minimal user control and can't play most CDRs.

This is an outstanding DVD player. It has every audio and video output imaginable. It has never displayed any audio synch problems and has played every DVD flawlessly.

There is also a way to disable the macrovision on some of the earlier production models. THIS MOD IS NOT FOR THE INEXPERIENCED THOUGH. If it gets screwed up, it will ruin the DVD oplayer and void the warranty. The details of the mod are at http://www.maxking.com/pioneer.htm

I would not hesitate to recommend this player to anyone and since it is an older model it can be purchased at a very good price.

Strength:

AC3 decoder builtin, all of the extras that should come with any DVD Player

Weakness:

The dreaded pixelization and sound skip.

I had this model for about a year and have had nothing but problems. Although it may be only my model, it seems that the picture breaks up after a hour of use. Not only that the sound seems to break up as well. I have invested in a Mid range system after my wife bought me this DVD player for christmas. I was having so much Pixel break up problems that atleast 59 of the 64 DVD'd I have bought have been brought back to the store. I finally figured it may have been the player after playing a movie in a system in the WIZ. I immediately called Pioneer and had my system fixed at there expense (still under the warranty). They ended up changing the Eprom on the system stating that the system was bad. Well I have news for you the system is still bad. Basically my review will have to unfortunately be a bad one. Although when it is working it works very well. However, that is far to few occurrances for me.

Strength:

Excelent Picture Quality and Sound Output - Dolby Digital Decoder Built In, Optical Audio and Componant RGB outputs. Superb remote. Macromedia can be disabled easily.

Weakness:

I along with other owners can confirm this unit has problems synching audio and video on many DVD's - You can hardly ever notice it but alas the problem is there. Although some CD-R's do work I have found that copied CD-R's with either 1 or no track information cannot be viewed.

This was my first player and I bought it when it first came out. Although I have been very pleased with it and don't regret my purchase there are now players without the problems above. When it came out I would have rated it 5 stars but my rating now shows it's had its time.

Strength:

Built in Dolby-Digital decoder
Built in DTS output (Digital out)
5.1 surround sound output
2 S-video outputs
Component and Composite Outputs
DVD/CD/VCD compatible

Weakness:

Notice on some dvds, when layer changes it pauses for a second. Its noticeable and some titles but on others transition is smoother.

I love this dvd-player. The 606D has features many would pay hundreds more on a comparable dvd player. I currently have the dvd hook-up to my kenwood vr3090 and polk speakers. The sound simply rocks. For $300 plus s/h I paid for it. Value and performace can't be beat.
