Strength:

Picture quality,smooth sound

Weakness:

Not the sharpest picture

Just looked at both the Pioneer and the Sony 560,and they both have a nice picture, but the Sony 560 had a finer grain stucture in the pics, with more details. Also the sound was very smooth and nice but tended towards the center channel more than the Sony which would let more left-right and rear ch. information through.
I really like this unit, but find others that are closer to that photographic quality, that says it's REAL.

"Audiophile" in this context would mean that I've abandoned my NEVER AGAIN(!) Sony multi-disc changer(model CDP-CX153) and only play single cds on this unit -- gotta be those 96kHz 24bit DACs on board. Oh, and dvds perform beautifully as well. The remote took some getting used to . . . but hopefully the VSX-27TX (Pioneer Elite A/V Reciever ordered today) will take care of that soon enough and control just about everything I operate in the home theater realm.

Strength:

Multi-bit 24 bit DACs. Component RGB Outputs. S-Video. Dolby Digital outputs. 10 bit DAC's. Played Diana Krall on par with the California Audio Labs CAL -15's. Top notch transport.

Weakness:

Reports of audio not syncing with video, I have had no problems. Does not play VCD's. Not quite as robust construction as the CAL-15.

Yet to see so much of a DVD player for the money I got. $376. I primarily bought it as a Hi-Res CD player after going through several High end players. In $2000 sub CD players, I preferrred the sound (and Dithering) of the Rotel RCD-991. But this baby comes close.

One weakness ( corrected by my notch filter) is a very slight emphasis on the 2kHz to 4kHz band, ... never use this with Sunfire Gear!! But can't complain on good recordings.

By the way as a bonus I also get a DVD player, picture very smooth and detailed. Component outputs and a Dolby Digital decoder..... for $376 what more can i ask for.

This is a very decent unit for the price. Got mine from COSTCO for 379.95, for this price, you get multibit 24 bit DAC's ( eg Meridian 508.24=$3800) and component video outputs ( $500 upgrade on the $2500 California Audio Labs CL-20).
Guys stop buying $1500 CD players, get this and as a bonus, get to play DVD's too.

Strength:

Good picture, dolby digital decoder built-in, strong pedigree brand. Good LED display.

Weakness:

No SCART output, CD-R playback fails (tested personally on Memorex Silver and Memorex Black).

My first, and so far, only DVD player. I can confirm that the picture quality is great and with a Paragon upgrade built in region changing is a doddle. When viewing movies in a darkened room there's a "Pioneer typically" impressive light show. Can't say I'm looking at changing until a reasonably priced MP3, DIVX player hits the market.

I just recently picked up this DVD Player for $379and all i can say is it is more than what I expected. I do not use the Built in DD decoder ( I don't no why anyone would, the decoder should be in a reciever or as a seperate.) The main reason I purchased it over the DV-414 is The extra outputs and the Remote which by the way is execellent. It is easy to use and is heavy not like so junky lightweight remote.
Here are the outputs
2x 2ch audio outputs
2x Composite video out
2x s-video out
1x component video out
2 x pcm
1 x optical out
The Image clarity and sharpness is subereb! There are three Options of Brightness Cinenma (The best with true dark dark black for a sharp image) Normal (regular) Animation (Real bright for light colors in animation films)

I purchased the 606d when it first came out in June. I was considering several others but went with the pioneer because of the component outputs and dts compatability. At that time only dvd players with built in decoders had component outputs, except for Sony,s 7000 which was $1,000 at the time.
I can tell you that the player has just been great. The picture quality is excellent,I have a Sony 32kvxbr48 set with component inputs, and it has the best remote I have seen for dvd players. I have never used the decoder so I can,t say how it works or not. I use a B&K ref 20, av5000 amp, and snell speakers for sound and it is terrfic. I have been a big laserdisc fan but dvd blows it away.

I have never experienced any problems with this player and only have good thing to say about the picture and sound of the 606d. I highly recommend it but since everyone is now supplying component outputs you may want to pass on buying it because of the dd decoder. However if you need a dd decoder this is one great unit. If you get a good price and don't mind a few extra bucks for the decoder it is money well spent. 5 stars

I purchased the DV-606D from a Coulders in Oak Creek Wisconsin. Since my visit to this great web site, it came to my attention that I paid to much for this product!!! I got this on sale for $545.00 marked down from the regular price of $599.00. A side from feeling like I overpaid by 45% for this DVD player, it play quality, input output and functions are easy to use. The manual is very self explanitory, with many graphics to help with setup in a varity of configurations. I use this with a Toshiba 50" TV with color stream separtation. The quality of the picture seems Twice that of Super VHS.
In fact I like the DV-606D so much I will be purchasing another one, right after I take this one back to the store for a full refund !!!!!
