I have had this DVD player for almost a year now. I enjoy the quality of the DVD player. It plays almost everything and has as many outputs as you need. The only problem I''ve had with this DVD player so far is the opening mechnism on the tray. When I hit the open button, the caursel opens, but then closes right away. It won''t remain open. I''m working on getting this fixed.

Strength:

Great video, easy to use, even better sound when used with
an outboard DAC, 5 way changer very convenient, plays CD/CD-R/CD-RW, price!

Weakness:

flimsy construction, no smooth ff/rw

I am mostly interested in the sound quality of CD playback,
but do love DVD movies. I feed the digital out to my
Musical Fidelity X-24k 96/24 DAC and the sound is just
fantastic through my Aragon 4004 amp with B&W 801 III
speakers. It is even better than my previous pioneer DVD-414 which surprised me. Essentially, the sound is
clear and balanced throughout the whole spectrum, without
being strident or weak in any areas. And the differences
between each CD comes out so clearly, showing excellent
resolution.

Regarding the video, I don't have much to compare it to,
but the quality is so good I don't really feel like
I'm missing anything. I guess you could have zooming,
smooth ff or rw, or other bells & whistles.

And the bottom line is that you can get all of this
for $270 or so, which is amazing. I challenge anyone
to compare this digital playback system against megabuck
audiophile CD players.

Highly recommended.

Strength:

Plays CDR CDR-W as well as DVD & CD. Great video & audio quality. Last memory consistently works.

Weakness:

Haven't found any yet

Remote complaints seem to be the most common but I use a Marantz RC-2000 so this isn't an issue with me. I've also read a few complaints about the noise of the player. Mine seems to be very quiet. At least quiet enough that I don't hear it when a movie loads or any other time while sitting on the couch. I haven't put my ear close to see if I could detect any noise as that's not a real world test.

I've put about 15-20 movies through this and the layer changes are virtually seamless. In fact I just realized the other day that I hadn't noticed any layer changes in any of the movies that I've watched thus far.

The video and audio quality are extremely good as well. I've only put in one CDR and one CDRW to test the player so I can't speak to the audio quality of non-movie music. 98% of what we use this for is DVDs.

So far this player has recognized any disc that has been placed in it.

To sum it up, I couldn't be happier with this purchase so far. I bought it from Amazon because I had a $150 GC. I did get a price at www.liquidprice.com of $250 shipped, taxes included.

Strength:

5 discs, GREAT picture, screen saver works well, and i'm all around happy i got it

Weakness:

slight pause at layer changes. but that's it.

Well, I bought this dvd player by recommendation of this site. lots of reviews, and high marks. but i gotta tell you, it's pretty nice. i was watching a RENTED disc of "Memento" and on TWO different discs, it couldn't get past the halfway mark. i don't really know why. other rentals work fine, but as i said, it does pause (only for a second) to change layers. no worries, it's usually placed well in the movie. a still shot or somethingm, so you rarely notice it.

all in all, i love this player. one of the "best toys on earth"

take care

Versatility

Weakness:

Durability

After having problems with a new Yamaha system I upgraded to a Pioneer Elite receiver and a Pioneer DV-C503 player. With approximately 15 movies watched problems arose with pauses and the tray door opening. I thought it was normal. Then it got slow reading the discs. Finally it quit reading them at all. 10 weeks later I got the player back from the repair shop. The parts had to come from Japan. Luckily the $315.00 bill ( only $35.00 in labour) was covered by warranty. As I was leaving the shop a lady dropped off the same player with the same problems ( I hope it was on warranty ). I've experienced most of the complaints others in this review have. I don't think any thing positive said about picture or sound could offset the risk of a bill like this. I've got two months warranty left and I am nervous as I can't afford a new player every year. I also find it stange that nobody complained that the remote did not light-up so you could see it in the dark. Luckily my receiver remote does most of the same functions.

Strength:

Video and sound quality, 5 disk capacity, CD-R playback

Weakness:

Lack of features

First the negatives, this player does not feature variable speed FF/REW. Also, the remote is a bit cumbersome, but I have come to like it, the critical buttons (menu arrows, play, stop, next, previous, FF, and REW are all in logical places.
Now the positives, the video quality is terrific (S-Video or component). The audio is just as stunning (optical or coax). Of course, both the audio and video rely heavily on the quality of television and sound system the signals are being fed to.
I do not understand the criticism of the player feeling "cheap". This player looks like most DVD players on the market (excluding the new 'WEGA-esque' Sony and Panasonic players). Also, noise emissions from the player when in use (either DVD or CD playback) are inaudible unless your ear is 6 inches from the player. When the player is changing disks, the sound is lower than that made by my Harman/Kardon 5-disk CD changer.

Strength:

Plays CDR's without a hitch

Weakness:

Terrible on-screen graphics

I really wanted a carousel player that would handle my collection of recordable CD's. The Pioneer does that easily. It plays music and movies just fine (though I don't have a high-end television), and I think it was a good buy at $250 for a basic player. However, I have experienced slight pauses during a number of movies I've gotten from Netflix. Never longer than a second or so, and if it happens, it's only in one spot on eacdh movie, but it happens (probably 10-20% of the movies I watch). I can't stress enough how poor the on screen graphics are - get a clue, Pioneer. The ff and rew functions are also poor, as they are just one speed, and you have to hold the button down for the first five seconds. Finally, the carousel is quite loud while shifting.
The verdict - it's great if you want an all-purpose machine. It's not for audiophiles, it's not for people who want really great equipment, and it doesn't do anything perfectly, but it does quite a few things very well. Things like the FF and REW don't bother me, because I tend to watch movies and listen to music straight through, beginning to end. The picture is as good as the one from my Panasonic, I think it sounds great playing CD's, and I'd recommend it to people who need to play CDR's and want to get their music and movies from one component.

NO PICTURE ADJUSTMENTS SUCH AS COLOR,BRIGHTNESS, ECT.NO DISPLAY DIMMER

SEEMS TO BE A SOLID UNIT THAT DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO.PICTURE IS VERY GOOD AND SOUND IS FOCUSED AND CLEAN.THE MULTI-DISC CD RANDOM PLAY FEATURE IS VERY NICE AND VERY FEW CHANGERS SEEM TO HAVE IT.IT COULD DEFINITLY HAVE MORE USER ADJUSTMENTS,BUT FOR THE MONEY IT'S PRETTY COMPLETE.I GIVE IT A THUMBS UP.OH,THE REMOTE IS NOT GREAT BUT ITS NOT THE WORST THAT I HAVE USED.

Strength:

Plays ALL CD formats, except DVD-Audio. User selectable Mode
for CD or DVD pickup type. Coax and Optical outputs, as well as Component Video. Lightweight remote, easy to use.

Weakness:

The main motor is a little noisy while running. Seems to take a few seconds longer to play the selections, once chosen from the menu.

Overall, a bit sparse on features... but for $299 it can't be beat. It was very important to me to be able to play CDR's, since I have a large collection of MPEG videos in VCD format on CDR's, as well as self-mixed audio CD's. This was purchased to upgrade an older CD-only Sony player that was acting up.

Since Sony could not provide me with a viable solution, Pioneeer wins with me!

The only drawback to the Pioneer is it "looks" a little different than the Sony, but what the heck...

Strength:

plays cdr's, cdrw's, vcd's, cd's, dvd's. great picture, great sound, multiple video outputs.....coaxial and optical digital output, 96khz/24 bit audio converter.

Weakness:

that @#$%& remote control. the buttons are too small!!!! hopefully after a few more months, i will be able to "memorize" the locations of each button without having to look at the remote. you figure with such a versatile player, they would of spent more time designing a better remote!

even though this may be my very first dvd player, this player has totally met my expectations of watching dvd's. my sony 5-disk changer was on the brink, so i wanted something that would play not only dvd's, but cd's, cdr's, and cdrw's, since i have a plentiful library of cdr's. i was so anxious to set this player up, that i havent even connected the coaxial digital output to my onkyo tx-ds484, i have only the composite audio and video outputs connected......and still i get great sounds from it. ive ordered the coaxial cable and very eager to hear the difference! the only complaint i have, is that i have the power cord connected to the back of the onkyo receiver, exactly the way i had the sony changer hooked up, but the pioneer doesnt turn on when i turn the receiver on, like the sony changer did? (any help on this is greatly appreciated) i guess i can live with that.....and definately looking forward to increasing my dvd library and enjoying hours of viewing pleasure.
