Stay away from RCA and Proscan products like the plague. Not only is the quality questionable - service and support are a consumer's worst nightmare. Do some research if you are sceptical..... when the product works, it works well. Chances are that you will have problems and will be frustrated by the lack of support. |

has trouble occasionally reading DVD's which gets annoying when you can't watch a movie when you want! |

Strength:
The styling of it was way ahead of its time. Dts playback and s video is perfect.
Weakness:
Cheap looking cd drawer, poop forward and reversing controls on unit and is relativly loud. I purchased the player back in the infancy of DVD and Divx. I mainly purchased it for its Divx capability. I had it for about a year and then froze up and shut off. I called up RCA and told them about the problem and they sent me a new one, no questions asked. From previous reviews I see that this was a common problem and RCA knew it. After I got the new player,I never had a problem since. I was rather upset though when they canceled Divx. Strength:
it works. looks great and sounds great
Weakness:
I don't care for $3.00 I bought my proscan 8680z at a yard sale for $3.00 bucks and so far it is working great. I ran a cleaner through it and have not had any problems. The man selling it was apparently not happy with it for some reason. For three bucks I am happy so far. Any one have any Ideas for a rplacement remote? Similar Products Used: DVD COmpaq |

Strength:
It has a stlyish look (which is about all I have now since it doesn't work)
Weakness:
Starts out with not being able to read disks, then picture goes in and out, and eventually you get nothing at all. I came accross this site while trying to troubleshoot my Proscan. This player worked well for the first year, then I had intermittent problems, and now it is a large paperweight. I have similar problems as the other 80 percent that think this product is a piece of junk. I'm actually glad to read the problems here because now I know that I should just throw it out. It was very frustrating getting a movie and not knowing if you will be able to watch the entire show. I for one am very disappointed in the length of service I got from this machine especially for the amount I paid for it (even back in 1999). Great Sound/Picture Quality.
Weakness:
Wish it came with the RF adaptor. But my TV has RCA jacks on it anyway. This is a great DVD player. I got it for a steal when i picked it up refurb at Circuit City. It has a Optical Audio out with plugs into my Surround Sound System. I have used this almost everyday for almost 3 years. Never had a problem with it, except trying to play one DVD. And that dvd would not even play on my inlaws brand new GE Player. So I dont think it's the Proscan's fault. Great Remote, Great Cables Included, Great Instructions. Never had a problem. Thanks Proscan. Similar Products Used: Probally about 30 different DVD players. Still like mine the best. |

ARRRRGH. Have had this for almost 3 years. More trouble than its worth. Short version of story leaving out frustrating phone calls: Bought it right after the death of divx for 300 (also got the 3 yr extended warranty, thank god). I had problems with it in the first week. It would freeze up in the middle of the movie, requiring me to unplug and replug. I took it back and they gave me another one. This one "only" froze twice during the first week. I called both thompson and circuit city. Got the same BS as below reviewers from thompson. Circuit city said they would send it in to get it repaired. Did so and after getting it back, it didn't freeze up anymore but after 3-4 months, I would get the "no disc" message more than half of the attempts to play dvds. I ended up just buying another dvd player (sony). I found out today that so many other people have been having the same problems and my 3 yr warranty is 17 days away. If circuit city can't fix, they will give me store credit. Fingers crossed! IF YOU ARE UNLUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND THIS FOR SALE DO NOT BUY. FOR EVERY ONE "GOOD" UNIT, THERE ARE 50 BAD ONES. DON'T PRESS YOUR LUCK. |

player dies and isn''t worth repairing My husband and I bought this player back in September of 1999 at Circuit City. We knew divx was going down and thought we might be getting a good price for a fairly high end player. Circuit City told us the original price was about 600.00 and that Proscan is the high end RCA line. After two years and a bit of decent play, this player has conked out...for good. Last night I popped in a disk and the motor wouldn''t spin. Then after awhile the tray started opening and closing for no reason. But I wasn''t fast enough to get the disk out. Fear not though, after about 60seconds it opened on its own and I managed to grab the disk in time. Then the tray closed and the motor started spining. After two minutes it displayed the "bad disk" warning. But there was no disk inside. We called Thompson Electronics and, according to their instructions, reset the machine to no avail. We thought Thompson might replace this player out of goodwill. The machine has only been out of warranty for one and a half years. But they told us they would not. What they offered was ridiculous. They would send us a refurbished machine, same model, for $119.00 with a 90 day warranty. We told them no thank you and by the way we will tell all you consumers about the crappy machine too. If you are a smart consumer stay away from any RCA products. They are useless. We have an RCA satellite receiver that won''t phone out, because our phone uses a 9 prefix. So we can''t order films from DirectTV. DirectTV has been kind enough to send us another machine. Hopefully that works. In any case, I''m on the market for a new dvd player. sometimes you can hear the disc spinning, also changing chapters is not fluid and a bit noisy I hope Proscan comes out with more DVD players because when I get ready to upgrade the next time I will look there first. I have been very pleased with this unit for the length of time I have used it. Real quick, if you are using the unit to play CD's, you need to just accept that this is a DVD player first and foremost and CAN play CD if your real CD player is in the shop. I have no real problems with the unit other than the noise it makes when changing chapters and the sound of ticking on some DVDs. I also can't say enough about the customer service I received from Proscan/Thompson when I needed it while changing setups. Overall this unit is a great performer with excellent looks, I hope Proscan comes out with more. Similar Products Used: Son DVPS330, JVC XV511, PIO DV525 |
