Strength:
cheap, low profile
Weakness:
tempermental as with most electronic devices these days, sometimes you need to power down the unit and reboot, for this one that means to unplug it( a daunting task in a home theater rack). |

Bait(nice features and cheap price) to reel you in, then leave you with garbage in less than a year.
Weakness:
Won't read discs after approximately one year. RCA should post a giant warning label on the box that reads Similar Products Used: Sharp, Sony. |

does not last long I bought the dvd 1 year ago. Barely used it. Went to turn it on one afternoon and the power would not go on. Of couse I called RCA which gave me the whole $90.00 bit story. After calling them and sending for the replacement which is a refurbished unit I decided to look up the consumer reviews. I got a sick feeling as I was reading your reviews. Immediately I call back and cancelled the (junk) they were sending out. I spoke to a manager that pretty much said to bad. So i decided what the hell I took one of the other readers advise and bought a new and sent back the old. I mean a company that will not take care of their consumers for a bad product, why should we pay again? Bad dvd I urge anyone not to buy this dvd. Similar Products Used: pionner, sony |

Strength:
Slim design
Weakness:
Longevity My unit has become unusable after only about nine months of use. I guess it has over heated similar to what others have said. The screen always freezes up after approximately 30-60 mins. If RCA doesn't recall this garbage, I will never buy anything from them again. |

Strength:
Good menu navigation, Component video output
Weakness:
Will only play DVDs, Case is very hot. Like the previous reviews, I have had problems with this unit. Picture quailty is pretty good and Dolby digital reproduction is good, but this unit will not play CDs at all. Unfortunately I did not discovery this flaw until after the 90 day warranty. I bought a Toshiba 3750 which is a good progressive scan unit and relegated this unit to my bedroom. I advise to unplug the unit when not in use--this should help the unit's longevity, though I feel a class action law suit is warranted. Similar Products Used: Phillips 825, Toshiba 3750 |

I have had this DVD for 8 months and now it plays for about three minutes and the picture locks up. At this point nothing on the remote or the front panel will do anything. The only thing I can do is unplug the unit and then plug it back in after about a minute and it will play again for about 3 to 5 minutes before it locks up again. Sounds like the processor is bad. I am suspect that it has overheated since the top stays warm regardless of if the unit is on or off. I consider that as a design flaw. Thompson wants $89.00 for exchange and told them no thanks. I am gonig to look for another name brand that will aleast get past one year warranty. |

Strength:
Price.
Weakness:
Freezes. Below average dvd player. Was looking for an average dvd player. This one is a little less than average. The reason I give it a less than average rating is that it occasionally freezes between menu screens or loading the dvd. The only way to fix it is to replug it in. The display stays on and all buttons don't work including remote, power, stop, nothing, but somehow it stays on. Like I said this happens only occasionally and besides that everything else is fine. |

simple, and effective. My wife can operate it.
Weakness:
Gets very hot. First let me say that this was purchased for me as a wedding gift. With that in mind I am very happy with it. I probably would have not bought it for myself, but I am glad I have it now. I have never had a problem with it and I have been using it about four times a week lately. The one thing that concerns me is the way it really heats up. I have my components in an Ikea cabinet that is enclosed, so this may aid in the build up of heat. However, I have an older Pioneer receiver that I love, and it does not get hot at all. Similar Products Used: Sony, and Pioneer |

Doesn't work any more I bought this piece of crap in February 2001. It worked okay for a while, but then it started to skip while watching movies, and sometimes it wouldn't even recognize the disc at all. Now (November), the power will not even come on, a problem experienced by several other folks below. Like everyone else I got the runaround from Thomson about paying $90 to fix/replace it -- I told them hell no. I may look into trying to get it repaired locally. Otherwise, I am going to chuck it off a tall building or run over it with my car. Don't buy this piece of crap, or you will be posting a similar message within a year. |

Everything about this payer is a weakness!! I received this DVD player as a gift for Christmas, and it was problematic from the beginning. It played the first DVD I inserted for approximately 20 minutes and then it just stopped abruptly. When I tried to play the disc again, I got an error message. I put a few other discs in, and got messages to the effect that the discs were incompatible with the player. I then unplugged it overnight and tried again the next day. I pretty much went through the exact same process, except that the image of the first disc broke up into digital blocks. What a waste of money!! I'm utterly disgusted. Has this model been recalled? If not, it should be!! Similar Products Used: None. This was my first DVD player. |
