Strength:

GOOD JACK OUTPUT VARIETY,PICTURE IS FAIRLY DECENT WHEN IT IT WORKS.FEATURES FOR THE PRICE-ZOOM,ANGLE,SOUND OUTPUT DURING FAST FORWARD,DTS ,"SPATULIZER"

Weakness:

REMOTE IS AKWARD AND LAZY.SKIPS AT LEAST ONCE DURING EACH MOVIE,DOES NOT PLAY SOME DISKS AT ALL-RIGHT OUT OF THE PACKAGE.

I FIGURED THE UNIT WAS DEFECTIVE AND RETURNED IT FOR ANOTHER,THE NEW PLAYER PERFORMED THE SAME,I ENJOY THE FEATURES FOR THE PRICE(CANADIAN 380$)HOWEVER THE INABILITY TO PLAY CIRTAIN DISKS,AND HAVE TO REPEATEDLY TRY WITH OTHER DISKS IS INEXCUSEABLE.I RETURNED THIS DVD AND PURCHASED A HITATCHI DV-P505 ULTRAVISION AND I VERY IMPRESSED,YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

price, remote, connections, good sound and picture.

Weakness:

SKIPS AT WILL!!! conrols are lazy to respond to touch. runs warm and gives off funny smell. Did I mention it skips?

I purchased due to its price and features, however, no matter how much a product costs, its no good if you can't use it. This thing skips and skips apparently when it warms up. Called up Samsung and was told to bring it to a repair center; I said the hell with this and exchanged for a Toshiba 1200. $30.00 more but hey it works!

Strength:

Easy to set up. Multiple outputs.

Weakness:

Video hesitation (skipping)

At first I thought it was a faulty DVD that caused the skipping even though it was "new, out of the package" (Perfect Storm). The guys at Best Buy seemed suprised that the 611 would skip so I tried another new DVD (The Game) which worked fine. Rented 2 DVDs and they both skipped so skipping/hesitation seems to be a universal problem with this model. If not for the skipping problem I'd keep it. I'm returning it and looking into the Toshiba SD-1600 that seems, based on the reviews here to be a better choice.

Strength:

Cheap, nice outs!

Weakness:

Skips if the disk isn't spotless

I rent movies from Blockbuster frequently, and I was ready to smash this player into tiny bits until my brain kicked in and I realized I should CLEAN rental DVDs before playing them. My skipping problems have vanished, and yours will too... clean the DVD!

However... several titles give a 'no disc' error message (notably, Disney's Mulan and Disney's Tarzan) and refuse to play no matter what I try, brand new disks right out of the box. Seems to be a software problem that a warranty-covered upgrade would fix, checking into that.

If you just want something that plays DVDs, you won't be wasting your money.

Yup!!! it is true i've had it for a month or two...and it does skip from time to time...and now it freaking freezes, so i have to turn it off and turn it back on whenever it happens. I guess thats what you get when you buy a cheap DVD player...If not for the DD and DTS features (which works pretty good by the way) i would not have had bought this player...

Strength:

Great Price, current features. Ease of use.

Weakness:

You can't change the audio track if you pause the movie? What's with that?

I have this player. From the first day I bought until today, I haven't had any issues. I have a few skips here and there, but that is usually dust or scratches (from rental movies). The sound is good and even plays my audio cds that have scratches in them better than my 10 year old cd player by Onkyo. I wouldn't suggest buying this player to someone standing there making a choice at best buy, but if someone asked my opinion of it, I wouldn't say it's bad. Certainly not to the degree that a lot of people are saying here. I don't have the skipping issues that others suggest.

On a side note: I could not get it to read anything but "real" cds or DVDs. It would not mount CD-R or CD-RW media which is such a bummer but I'm not going to complain.

I believe this is a good value for your money. For those with skipping problems, maybe you should turn your sub down (just a suggestion?).

Strength:

Lots of outputs, price.

Weakness:

Blah blah blah skipping-cakes.

I had the same skipping problems as everyone else here, so I took my DVD 611 in to get serviced. According to the reciept (I got this done under warranty) they replaced the main PCB unit and the DVD deck. It works like a dream now, although during a really fast-paced fight scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon the screen kind of "blocked out" in the upper right hand corner. I figure this kind of stuff is going to happen unless I'm willing to spend $300-$400 on a better DVD player. All in all I'm glad the thing is fixed but I'll never buy another cheapie Best Buy-style DVD player. It's off to my local high-end a/v shop (Kief's in Lawrence, KS) for my next one.

Strength:

Inexpensive.

Weakness:

Apparent lack of quality control.

This is, prehaps, one of the worst DVD players that I've seen since Samsung's DVD-709. Discs which are in new condition (That's right, discs which are perfect.) require repeated remounting just to load, much less play, which counters the suggestion that dirty or damaged discs would be the cause. The same discs would be mounted in a Toshiba and they would load and play without difficulty. I am reading mostly negative reviews accompanied by some good reviews, which would suggest that Samsung requires an extensive overhaul of their quality control measures, especially since their competition make better players which cost only a little more or a little less than Samsung's players. The term "you get what you pay for" doesn't exactly apply here since now, for about the same price, a better player can be purchased. Until Samsung gets their act together with their players, they cannot be recommended since better players can be had for about the same amount of money. - Reinhart
