Strength:

Hackable, macrovision disable.

Weakness:

1 scart. no 5.1 connections

It seems to me the USA has a different version beacause I (in the UK)have had absolutely no problems with it in the 2+ years I have owned it. I use it loads and it never overheats - as a precaution I raised it slightly with blue tac in each corner to allow more air underneath and kept it in a well ventilated area and its been fine.

The simple region hack is great and the fact that macrovision is disabled too as i can now record my DVD's.

The one thing that does bother me is CD-R's but I beleive this is a problem with many players you just have to find the right brand.

You can now get this player for below £100 ($150) which i think is great considering the quality of features that you get.

Strength:

hackable,good picture.

Weakness:

dual layer bug even with upgrade chip.

well first thing i had to do was cut a hole in the side to prevent overheating. then at my expense i installed an upgrade chip.
it still has a layer change problem with the matrix.
calling samsung usa's toll free # i was promised a free repair for this problem even though i am 3 months past warranty. after a 2 week wait for return authorization i called back and was informed they changed their minds. being i have an extended warranty w/my credit card i offered to pay.
they refused my business but gave me another companies # to call. that number is never answered.
so i will not buy samsung products ever again. they are not consumer friendly.

considering all the recent problems, I take ALL my compliments back

Weakness:

UNRELIABLE!!!! Picture lock up, overheats...It's a POS

No disrespect to Joe who posted below me, but I think he either ound the only worthwhile Samsung service center in THE ENTIRE WORLD or he's lying...

I had the exact same problems with this pile of dog poo that every other Samsung owner has dealt with...the damn picture locks up 1-3 times per every 5-15 minutes. It worked great the first few months...seemed to skip more on paramount discs than others so i thought it was a studio problem. Boy WAS I WRONG. I took it to Lifetime Service Center (AKA Stereo Advantage in the Buffalo NY area) so let this be a warning to you fellow WNY'ers...dont take your player there to be fixed. The technician treated me like I was wasting her time with my crappy Samsung player. Ive dealt with indifferent warranty repair places, but they were the WORST. But there's more...read on. I had to have the ENTIRE LASER ASSEMBLY REPLACED and also the firmware was supposedly "upgraded"...the total bill would have come to 250 smackers had it not been under warranty. Mind you the thing isnt even a year old. I was happy, new laser and chip, so I put on a disc. Well, not only did they NOT fix my player, it actually skipped worse than before. Now it cant even play single layer discs right. I put on this crappy Bruce Li movie I just bought the same day fo 6.99 from circuit city, and THAT even locks up.
I called the techican back, and she refused to service it further. She said they "did all we can do to fix it." Well, no...ITS STILL SKIPPING!!!! So they basically blew me off.

So, I got good and pissed and called Samsung, and now they are replacing my 709 absolutely free of charge with a brand new 612. Based on the nightmare reviews of the 611 I'm not too excited. I'm considering taking that 612 and selling it unopened so I can get a Pioneer, Sony or Toshiba, you know, a QUALITY mfr. who at least knows their a$$ h0le from a circuit board. Let someone else have the 612 and deal with these samsung twits.

I would not recomend this player or samsung's entire product line to my worst enemy. Their tech support was some person who was clueless and put me on hold for 20 minutes while she supposedly looked for a technician. And they still couldnt tell me why my picture was locking up! I'm sure the 612 will be just as terrible. Take these lessons from my 3rd and final review of this POS:

1) AVOID SAMSUNG'S PRODUCTS!! Read all the reviews for yourself and be the judge. They are no good, and their network of "authorised repair centers" are abominations to the industry.

2.) RESEARCH YOUR PLAYER BEFORE BUYING! Had I known about this site i would have avoided this sam-suck crap. Ive never been steered wrong by this sites reviews.

3.) IF ANYTHING, STICK WITH YOUR VCR FOR A WHILE YET. This technology is not perfected and should not be licensed to idiots like samsung. An S-VHS vcr with comparable video quality to DVD can be bought for 150 bucks.
But you do as you wish. I wish i never would have bought into this DVD hype crap.

Strength:

PRICE, remote, hackability

Weakness:

Skipping, skipping, skipping. Oh, and no component video.

I got the DVD player as a Christmas present. As a poor college student, it has taken me a full year to build enough of a collection to find the problems. Newer, more advanced DVDs *always* skips. "Scary Movie" is completely unplayable. "Elizabeth" skipped unmercifully through the last half of the film. "Brazil" skips, then locks.

Samsung customer service has been kind to me, but the entire model is simply outdated. Don't buy one.

I purchased the Samsung DVD-709 for $249 at K-Mart with five free movies (this is a coupon and a mail in). The player presents a very good picture, but I've noticed two faults 1)Some lip sync problems and 2) Skips and won't play certain CD's. The lip sync is not often a problem but I noticed it on Liar Liar and My Best Friends Wedding also on certain CD's it will skip. Not many but some. Good player for the price, but it is not fault free. Three Stars

I purchased the Samsung for 227.00, I have been VERY impressed with the features and performance of the player. The only skipping I have noticed was on Rainmaker, and it was a rental copy, so it may be related to that. All in all, I am pleased, and quite content with my first DVD unit.

I recently purchased the DVD-709 and I have to say it is one of the best DVD players that I have tested. The picture and sound quality are excellent and at $270 it was a great deal. If it only had component video output it would be perfect. Don't be fooled by the name or the price, this is a great piece of equipment.

Bought a few days ago at Best Buy for $199 (w/ free DVDs & rentals offer). I've been amazed at the improvement in features / picture quality vs. laserdisc.
I considered a number of others (Sony 530, Pioneer 414, Toshiba 2909, Panasonic 120). Each of those seemed to have some type of fundamental glitch.

I don't have the others to compare side-by-side, but I'm very happy so far with the Samsung: awesome picture & sound, lots of cool features, good remote...
