All in all it was a good deal,But I thought it was suppose to better than a VCR.The picture and sound are good, but it always skips and freeze frames on almost every DVD disk.I was better off with my VCR.Maybe I just got a bad one.

Strength:

Under 200 Dollars.

Weakness:

No MP3 Playback.

Bought one at Best Buy day after Thanksgiving. Big Display sign said reads and plays CDR-CDRW and MP3. Great I buy it.
It will play my MP3's but only with a hiccup or pause every 10 seconds. It could only read the Dos format also (8.3) for display purposes. So I decided to exchange for one that could play MP3 without skipping every 10 seconds. I asked the sales teenager where the big "Plays MP3s" sign was. He said "if its not on the box it must not play MP3's".
The second unit will not read ANY of my MP3's. I will never buy Samsung again. Taking this turkey back. PS. The cd playback is horrible. I am going to try a Toshiba DVD.

Strength:

For very low price it plays music CD-R, has coaxial out, has component out.

Weakness:

Identifies but does not play MP3 (without skipping). Slow menu action, remote not responsive, manual says will NOT play CD-Rs (yes it will).

Bought it because (in the store) it could read my cheapo computer "data type" CD-Rs better than the Philips model of the same price. Samsung should take the note about being able to play MP3s off the box. I took my friends MP3 CD-R that works great in his car audio (AIWA) deck, and it skipped on my Samsung, went back to the store and it skipped on their display model...looks like no MP3 play for this model. I have not had any other problems mentioned in other reviews here. I must have gotten a good one (sans MP3), it runs cool, looks good using component out and sounds good using coax out. If you don't need MP3 play but require a player that reads CD-Rs (like me) this is the budget player. As a note: for a few dollars more, the JVC XV523 and Pioneer DV-333 also played my crappy CD-Rs well in the store.

As a basic DVD only machine for use with AV receiver(with DTS and Dolby 5.1 decoder via bitstream (coaxial/optical output) and TV with component video input, the Samsung 711 price/value/functionality can not be beat.

Weakness:

Skips, freezes, over heats, dvd and mp3.

All these features too good to be true? - Yup!
This unit is definatly an unperfected, and defective model.
The first day of use it played dvd's fine, while I noticed a slight burning smell coming from the unit.
The unit overheates and the burning smell must have been the lubrication burning while playing.
I could feel the heat on the dvd after removal from unit it was hot!
The dvd's after the second day of use kept skipping, freezing, jittering.
Mp3's did play but would constantly skip.
Advice: Stay away from this manufacturer, buy tosiba, sony or pioneer.

Weakness:

MP3's skip during playback

I haven't had any problems playing DVD's, no freezing, skipping ect. The picture quality and sound are excellent.
(I've never had a DVD player before so I'm comparing to VHS.) Just needs to get the mp3 playback fixed.

Strength:

Great features for the price

Weakness:

Doesn't actually work

I was very disappointed with this purchase, which was my first DVD player. I found the features easy to use, and especially liked the joystick interface and moveable zoom. Unfortunately I could not find a movie which would play the whole way through. Each would freeze at some point, the display would lock up for a while the say disc not playable. The first five were rentals, then I borrowed a brand new DVD from my brother and that had the same problem. I took it back to exchange it and when I went back to get another one they had six in boxes and all were Open Item (i.e. returned). Needless to say I didn't get another of this model and selected a Toshiba. It has less features but hopefully is more reliable. I am not picky and probably couldn't tell the difference between high quality play and mediocre, my basic requirements were just "actually works" and this one failed miserably. I would definitely steer clear of this model.
