And if you are thinking about having it repaired, don't waste your time. I took it in to a service center and they replaced the "pick up" for a total of $170.00 (thank God for the warrenty) and it still doesn't work.

Strength:

Disc tray makes a nice coffee cup holder

Weakness:

Doesn't have two disc trays so you could put a donut next to your coffee.

One good thing about electronic equipment is that, if it is going to go bad, it will go bad quickly. In this regard, the 711 doesn't disappoint for it "went bad" immediately. It skips, it freezes, it does everything but actually play a DVD. When--and if--it does play, the picture shutters and skips and could probably cause someone with epilepsy to have a seizure.
The only good thing about it is that, when you turn it on "Hello" scrolls across the display. I like this because it humanizes the machine and I don't feel quite as foolish when I curse at it.
Sorry to sugar-coat my review. Would anyone like to know how I really feel?

Strength:

Easy hookup, decent remote

Weakness:

Horrible playback, trouble with many discs.

I purchased this unit for my father, and was embarrassed when I had to pack it up for return. Not a single movie we played on it was worth watching -- many stutters, sync problems, and lockups, primarily when reading from the second DVD layer or changing layers -- ie, problems started occurring about halfway into the movie.

I'm taking it back to exchange for a different model at the same price level, likely the Pioneer DV333 or the Sony DVP-S360.

This experience has soured me on Samsung products, and reassured me that my personal Sony preference is right on the money.

Strength:

Well, VERY nice silver finish and a good amount of connections. I brought this for my dad, and used it a lot more then him. Sound, picture, remote, and features are all famtastic. price was excellent.

Weakness:

....None so far

This DVD player is far superior to my mates Panasonic RV20EBS, simply because the picture is so much sharper. this is one of the best budget DVD player availiable. it has brilliant looks, but manages to still play back movies incredibily well

Strength:

Picture is crystal clear. Sound is excellent. Features for the price are outstanding.

Weakness:

Tends to skip on CD and very occasionally on DVD

For the budget person, this DVD player is excellent, as long as you do not play CD's too often.

Strength:

Looks good, many features for the price.

Weakness:

Didn't work

I bought this usit at best buy as an open box yesterday. I get it home, hook it up according to the instructions in the book and get NOTHING. It will play but will not display sound or picture on my TV. I even manage to program the remote to work correctly on my TV and the DVD. Still, no picture or sound. I should have come here first before buying. I am taking it back today.

EVERYTHING

Got the DVD 711 as a Christmas gift from my dad. Worked great for the first day. Since then EVERY movie I've played in it has skipped so bad that I couldn't finish watching tham. Tonight the audio started to go. Really bad crackling noise on the right channel, within 10 minutes it moved to both channels. I'm taking it back first ting in the morning and exchanging it for a Pioneer DV333, the reviews on that one are great.

Strength:

Plays mp3 - sort of... Good remote

Weakness:

Video/Audio freezes 2-3x per DVD, so called mp3 compatibility is a joke

This player was a gift from my parents for christmas. I read the reviews online after experiencing problems with the mp3 playback. Displays names in DOS 8.3 format (so you don't really know what song is playing if you have band name to start the file name), it skips about .5 seconds forward once every 15 seconds or so, and it has no program or shuffle feature. CD playback was pretty good, but I have a 5 disk changer to do that - this is not an important feature to me. DVD playback is hit and miss. I watched U-571 on Christmas Day and it worked flawlessly, however, earlier in the day it choked on The Matrix more than once before we restarted the movie (then it worked perfectly the whole way through). The video and audio freeze up often enough that it became annoying when the viewing of Caddyshack even suffers. This movie was made in the 70's (no DTS/THX, etc), no special effects to speak of, and the disk was BRAND NEW. I thought players flinched upon being overwhelmed with sound and effects, but this player is just plain clumsy.

Strength:

Remote is comfortable and easy to use.

Weakness:

Skips and freezes.

Got a Samsung 611 for Christmas. It skipped frequently. Took it back and got the 711 model. It was even worse. Skipped and froze constantly. Very frustrating. I'm now returning this and getting another brand entirely.

Skips

Bought the 711 on sale at Best Buy for a birthday present. I appeared to work ok at first. I noticed it would occasionally skip up to 10 times during a movie. Bought Gone In 60 Seconds and the 711 reported NO CD on the display. I exchanged the movie and the same NO CD message appeared. I guess it's not the movie. I asked my friends if they experienced the same problems with their DVD's and they said no. Being the first experience with a DVD player, I'm disappointed. My wife told me VHS gives us less grief.

Time to return it.
