an Audiophile

I'm in the process of building my stereo and surround AV system. My first priority is good stereo sound, with the movie watching experience a long way below that. I've listened to a few really expensive AV receivers (like the Sony E9000ES and the Yamaha A-1), but nothing sounds fantastic with regular music. Therefore, I know that I need a separate, dedicated stereo system. Unfortunately, I don't have a separate room, so I have to integrate this audiophile system with my surround system. I'm also building from the ground up, with only my 32" RCA TV remaining from my prior system.
Because my wife had gotten used to the 5 CD changer in our interim Panasonic all-in-one system, she wasn't interested in living without the feature for the next six months while I built-up my new system. Space was limited in my AV cabinet, so the Sony 5 DVD changer with dual laser pick-up for CD seemed like a smart buy. I wasn't too concerned with the quality of sound, because I was planning on buying a "good" CD player later.

So I purchased this unit back in February. Since then I've had ample opportunity to try it out. In general CDs sound very acceptable, although they could be a little more lively. The changer is very fast and quiet, and the random function seems to work reasonably well. Changing four discs while one is playing is also very cool.

I've watched only a few movies on the system, but the video seems much crisper than my RCA VCR, and the sound quality is excellent. I've not got the AV receiver yet, so I can't comment on separation of the soundtrack channels, etc.

When I first picked up the player, I had the stereo shop make up a cheap interconnect with a DIN plug for my NAIM amp. The sound seemed OK, if not spectacular. Later I purchased a Chord Cobra 2 interconnect. The dual audio outputs of the Sony unit enabled me to use two inputs on my NAC 102 to compare these two cables. Although I'm a skeptic at heart, I was pleasantly surprised to hear the Chord cable sounding much smoother and liquid. The cheap cable now sounded harsh and grainy in comparison. If you find this player sounding a little harsh, try upgrading your cable before anything else.

After a few months I purchased a Naim CD 3.5 with a Naim Flat-Cap power supply. This player really sings. It's far more engaging, enthralling, and enjoyable. When I go back to the Sony unit it sounds listless and dull. However, the Naim configuration is approximately $2900US compared with the $700US that I paid for the Sony player. For this difference, I expect significant differences. The Sony is still a very acceptable CD and DVD player. (My wife is convinced that she can't hear the difference.)

So if you're not an "audiophile", you want a 5 CD changer, you expect to watch DVD movies, you want to save yourself some shelf space, and you don't want to spend too much money, then this player will suit your needs very well.

I purchased the DVD player in May and couldn't be happier. The picture quality of the Sony is unbelievable. Disc exchange is a breeze and the unit is quiet. I picked it up on eBay brand new and at a very low price. I haven't had any problems when playing audio CD's and it sounds better than the es cd players. Setup is a cinch and the remote is beautifuly easy to use. I give 5 stars for quality use and definetly price. With Sony you get what you pay for.

I am beginner audiophile on a tiny budget and in need to revamp system. One of the things I needed to buy was a DVD player and possibly a new CD changer (I had a first generation JVC XL-MC100 mega-changer - a component control unit and a big cube to hold the discs).
First I did not consider DVP-C600D as an option because of its price (and who needs to watch 5 DVDs at one sitting anyway?). However, wife was very supportive of the idea of consolidating two components into one. So I purchased one at Crutchfield for $510 (special 15% off discount), which arrived in 2 days, along with coupons for 8 free rental at www.netflix.com and 4 free DVDs (the standard ones).

Opened the unit, found it handsome and built OK (does not feel solid). The audio was good, much better than JVC (hey, I did say I was a beginner, right?). Very impressed with the video quality as well. The jog wheel on the bulky remote is annoying as I prefer buttons. Two sets of complete AV output (2 S-vido, 1 component video) were very nice. No DTS output, which is OK since my SOny STR-DA80ES does not have it either.

Very good value for the money.

This is a nice player! Ive had mine awhile now and love it. It plays my cdrs with no probs and all my DVDs play flawless as well. Great audio and picture. It has the 5:1 decoder built in so the fact that it doesnt pass DTS is no biggie at all especially since they are both very close in performance. Got mine locally at Wards for $539.

I sold my 5-disc Yamaha CD changer to combine both CD and DVD in one unit. I chose the Sony DVP-C600D. Firstly, selling my Yamaha was a BIG mistake...the Sony unit does not come close to the natural sound reproduction of the Yamaha. I think the Sony has fine video, but the CD sound leaves a lot to be desired. I'm trying to buy back my old Yamaha, bring the Sony 5-disc back to the store, and purchase a Sony single disc unit. More space will be needed but at least I can enjoy GREAT CD sound once again!

I have this unit for 6 months now. I like it a lot. Video quality is very good. Although I have not really listen to music much to be able to determine if the music is good or not. Not having DTS capable is not big deal to me. I don't want to pay extra for DTS disk anyway.

I have had the Sony for 8 months and I believe it is a great box. The DVD is exceptional and has too many features to mention. I will say that the component video out gives the best possible picture available on TV. Your TV must support this feature. The picture quality is excellent, and I believe the sound quality is superb too. I have the Harmon Kardon AVR65. I am able to play my CD's as well as DVD's in Digital format. I can not record in Digital put switching to the COAX digital while a CD is in from analog makes a huge difference in the sound quality.

Strength:

5 DVD carousel

Weakness:

Poor finish / Ability to play all CDs

Like many others here, I bought the product because I did not have space for separate CD / DVD players and I prefer a 5 disc carousel for CD play. However, it fails to play a few CDs that my Pioneer CD player plays without problems. Same for some DVDs. Otherwise I'm fairly satisfied with its video / audio quality. I should have waited for the price to fall below 650 though!

Strength:

Plays CDRs, Excellent Remote, Tonnes of outputs

Weakness:

No DTS

If your in the market for a nice DVD Player this is the one for you. I highly recommend to anyone looking to see if you can still find this model in stores. It is a very nice machine and it does play CDR's unlike the newer model. The only weakness is the lack of DTS support but honestly DTS isn't that big a deal, it isn't supported by all studios and everything releases in non-DTS as well anyways.

So good to have my purchase validated by so many other users. I must admit that I bought this player because all my other (inherited) audio and TV equipment is Sony, so it was kind of a default choice. This other Sony equipment has always performed well, and the past month with my DVD player has been great. But reassurances like the reviews here and the info on http://www.productopia.com/1c/0,1524,1-1-6,FF.html and http://www.sony.com/cgibin/search.cgi?col=sony&qs=DVD%20Player&nh=10 were very helpful. Thanks for reaffirming my choice!
