Well, the improvemnet has come....DVP-C650D. Yes, With DTS Feed to an external decoder. Also, an improved Dual Optical laser, but it does not pick up my CD-R. I have had it for two Weeks, Will I keep it?? It plays good, but with all the CD-R's going around it would be nice to have one that picks it up...Sony!I know the Sony S7700 Does!!!

After a few days of owning the Sony 600D, I am happy to say that the player is an excellent choice for a mid fi DVD player. I especially like the ability to load up as many as five of your favorite movies and access them as you desire. Even though you can only watch one movie at a time, I find it a nice feature to not have to change out a movie during family viewing time. I have not listen to any CD's yet. I bought the player primary for movie watching. It has all the latest feature as most players out there. No lip sync problems after several movies. Not Bad!

I like this DVD unit a lot. It's speedy, has great picture and sound, and the convenience of the changer comes in handy. I just wonder why it took so long for someone to build a 5 disc DVD player to begin with?

After upgrading to a new A/V receiver (Yamaha RX-V2092) and speakers (Polk RM5400)for home theatre, my next anticipated purchase was a DVD player. Not having a CD changer, I intended to combine DVD/CD in a all-in-one unit via the 5 CD Carousel product Sony announced earlier this year. This model, the Sony DVP-C600D (suppose to be similar to the S500D - single disc unit) comes with dual discrete lasers; one for CD; and the other for DVD. This unit is also capable of playing CD-Recordables, one of the reasons for buying a Sony. The 5 CD Carousel exchanger allows random/shuffle playing of the 5 discs, giving it a nice mix of programming.
Sound and picture are excellent.. to my satisfaction. I am not making a comparison of this product to any other, as I am not that familiar with other players. The resulting display produced from the DVD player is very impressive on my 46 inch proj TV (Sony 46V25). Dolby Digital sound is crisp and bright, and very distinctive. This unit seeks the 5.1 tracks and will play 5.1 automatically.

The negative side: Received '1st' player approximately two weeks ago. This unit 'new' as removed from the shipping carton, and not having any obvious appearance of damage, would not play. When plugged-in, it displayed a "E:26:05" error code (a self diagnostic test - hey, we have a problem!!!!). Thought the obvious, the tray drawer would not open, when the button to do so was activated. Sony Tech Support: 1) send it to Bristol, Pa ??? 2) bring it to a 'local' service center??? 3) return to vendor??? Elected to contact vendor, who arranged for 2nd unit pick-up. Did so about 5 days later.

Had the store where I picked-up the 2nd unit, remove the player from the carton and plug it in. It worked: drawer opened and no error messages. On the 2nd day of use, the dreaded error code came on "E:26:05". The player turns itself off. So, by hitting the on/off/on/off switch on the remote a few times, the disc that would not play will play. As noted before, this player does play all discs as well as CD-R's. During the course of a week this unit has acted up only one more time, with this error condition. Don't know if it is finicky or just a random problem - but, I am concerned that it may become a bigger issue down the road. I am not interested in 'my property' sitting in a service center waiting for them to eventually fix or repair the problem.

Tech support is flaky. Call their 1-800-222-7669 number: selected 'Video' for support (eternal wait..) to be told, I wanted 'Audio'. Why, I asked? Not given a clear answer; I suggested that they add DVD to their list of selections. The person I spoke to in 'Audio' gave me a run-around to my question. "Why do I not hear the test sound (hiss/beep) when I am in TEST MODE", as referenced in the C600D manual. This person insisted that sounds to my speakers would come from the test mode from my receiver??? Huh. I insisted that the sounds would be generated from signals from the DVD player, sent to the receiver and played through the speakers! This is the purpose of the test mode as displayed in the manual - and... as displayed on the screen, which shows flashing speakers, but not emitting any sounds. Tekkie had to speak to his guru, who I requested to speak to, but could not. I was told to hold on.... and got the EXPECTED cut-off.... You know, the familiar dial-tone....

Called again.... went directly to 'Audio'. Spoke to another tekkie... Had to relate the whole story. He had to speak to a guru... Hey there is a solution. Now I am told.... TEST MODE may not work with 'optical cable' but would work with 'coaxial' cable (of course this is not noted in the manual). Gee, how awkward... I don't have a coaxial cable to verify that piece of information. I wonder if it helped their reply when I told them I was using 'optical'??

Sorry for lengthy commentary.... maybe this will help someone.

Giving it 3 stars, as I am apprehensive about this product.

I just picked up this CD/DVD changer, and love it. I burn some CD-R's, and was concerned that it would not work, but it works fine. Mine was an open box deal from Circut City that they let go for $430! You cant beat that price with an AC-3 decoder and a 5 disk changer. I also just purchased a Sony DB-830, its worth looking at!

At $400, you can't go wrong with this player. Top notch picture quality, excellent features, good remote, no mechanical noise. Very smooth operation.

Strength:

solid machine, excellent 32-bits processer, sony cinma sound processer(like DTS), lighting remote, and 5 disc changer.

Weakness:

Does it really need DTS? How about THX processer, too?

It is an excellent dvd player and has all the funtion, including bass managment, different decoders and audio filter in the machine. It is nicely build, quiet, superior sound quality and shape picture.
The player is very user friendly with the on-screen manual design, and I didn't have to read the manual to understand how to operate the machine. Best of all it is made in Japan that means solid bulid quality and expensive parts from Japan.
During music soundtrack playback, I am able to hear the extra bits from the music that I never hear it before, thanks to the 32-bits processer (believe me, it has nothing to do with my amp or speaker, I use b&k and b&w). During the movie playback, the superior picture quality is better than other dvd player such as, Toshi...RCA...Philips, and etc.
I can't find any weakness,yet... the new dvp-650d has the dts digtal out, but, it doesn't have the 32-bits superior processer, that is a trade-off. (the 32-bits really made a difference if u are into computer technologies)...Thanks!

Strength:

Ability to play CDR's; versatile 5 disk mix of CD's and DVD's

Purchased this unit at $399 since they were closing it out in favor of the new 650D. Since the 650 will not play CDR's and was $200 more it was a no brainer decision for me. I like the unit very much. Good video and audio quality and it a great fit if you do not have room from both a DVD and CD player. If you can still find the model at a good price I recommend that you consider it.

I bought my DVD player around a week ago at the Marine Corps Exchange for $695 (I know this is probably not the best price available, but I like to buy from a local source). At this point, I am very pleased with the unit. It does not have DTS, but the Dolby Digital seems very adequate for my use. One thing to watch out for if you're considering a single tray DVD player is whether it will play home recorded CDs. This was a big consideration for me as apparently the single tray types don't play home made CDs. The SONY 600 plays them just fine, though. The special effects work well as it has a nice jog dial on the remote and the slow motion is very smooth. I have not seen any "digital artifacts." The only thing I've noticed is a lack of smooth black to grey shading in dark areas of certain videos, but I think this is common to the format regardless of player. Once you have a DVD, you will not want to watch a VHS tape ever again!
There was one thing about the purchase that I have not yet resolved, though. SONY (and most other DVD manufacturers) have agreements with DVD companies (in this case NETFLIX) to give you some free DVDs (the James Taylor DVD, plus 3 DVDs of your choice (max of $25 each), plus the JT CD "Hourglass,". When I signed up for this offering, it said my serial number had already been used! (and the box had never been opened). So I've got to work this one out. Maybe a little fraud going on there.
