Strength:

It is a great DVD player!! Again, Sony has made its mark...

Weakness:

Kinda noisy when changing disc but who cares when you can only watch one movie at a time... It would be nice to have a lighted remote rather than a glow in the dark remote that only glows right after you turn off the lights....

I found the Sony DVP-C650D to be an excellent DVD player..However, people need to read the maual more carefully and stop complaining about how it doesn't play CDRs..The manual clearly states that the player DOES NOT play CDRs...Duh??
It's a excellent DVD player ...Seeing is believing...

I looked into other comapnies such as Onkyo, Denon, and Nakamichi to see if their players had an edge on Sony...Trust me, they don't...

Strength:

5 disk W/shuffle, unlike the Onkyo I almost bought.
10-bit video DAC, 96Hz/24 bit audio D/A converter

Weakness:

None, not at $450.00

I have to say that I am very impressed with performance of this DVD player, I have it hooked up to my Nakamichi 1a1z receiver via Kimble Kable AGDL silver digital coaxial cable ($220,1M) and Audioqest S-2, S video cable ($125.00,1M). The audio and video are just amazing, I never realized how important good quality cables can make in a system. My system sounds as if it costs thousands more. I am using B&W Nautilus 800 speakers for the fronts,B&W center and surrounds. My advice, buy a $500 DVD player spend the rest on good cables, You won't beleive your ears!!

Strength:

Value, BIG bang for the buck! Bought it for less then $500 at a local electronics store.

I am thrilled with my new 650D DVD player, the first one I ever bought. Have waited almost 2 years to decide on a DVD player and chose the 650D after reading all the reviews in here. The connections were easy to make and it even allowed me to connect via my VCR (thanks to the 2 Audio/Video outs)although the manual adviced against it. This also replaced my aging Technics CD carousel (bought it in 91 straight out of college) and was amazed to hear my CDs sounding a lot crispier. I don't have a TV that allows s-video or other form of digital connections but from what I have seen so far, the DVDs definitely look better. I have watched Saving Private Ryan, Pink Floyd's The Wall, and Gone with the Wind (OK, I have varried taste!) and they all played without any problems (that I could perceive). There were a few weird moments when playing Gone with the Wind, it almost looked like slight blurr when the camera panned in for a close-up of Scarlette in a few scenes, but I attributed that to the digital conversion of a rather old film.

All in all, I am happy. Maybe I should have waited a few months to write this review (and maybe I will :)

Strength:

Picture Quality, Shuffle Capability, Remote, Sound

Weakness:

Carousel initially a little sensitive. Ability to play CD-R's (limited, but not impossible)

I have limited space available for audio components, so I bought this player to view dvd movies without having to find a place for it and my cd changer. After 6 months with it I'm still extremely pleased with it, especially after having read reviews for some of the other dvd/changers on the market.

The picture and the sound are great. (I have a Sony strde-535 receiver with Sony surround speakers, center channel and subwoofer. I now find it very difficult to even watch any of the countless videotapes that I've been collecting for years. The menus are great once you understand what you're looking at and the more I play with it the more features of the player I uncover.

Playing audio CD's -- No problem at all with standard, store-bought CD's, but limited ability to play the audio CD-R's that I've made. After a lot of searching and testing I was able to find a brand that works. Mr. Platinum PCRS-80 or PCRS-74. They're blue coated with a silver label and are less translucent which enables the dvd player to read the information correctly. Every one I've made using this media has worked. (You'll need to search the web to get them!)

As for the price of the Sony DVD/Changer it's more expensive than the other brands, but in my opinion the money you save with the others is not worth it. The only other comparable player that I've seen is the Denon DVD/Changer, but its $900, and I'm not quite at that income level yet.

Strength:

Built in Dolby Digital Decoder, Great video, Great audio, Sony reliability, Intuitive Glow in the dark remote

Weakness:

None

I bought this unit after I returned my Toshiba. It was too buggy and didn't shuffle discs. I am very happy with this unit, the built in decoder is great. I cannot add much more that the previous reviewers haven't covered. This is a solid all around product. I was a bit overwhelmed by the many features at first, but after reading through the manual and trying out the different features, using this unit is a snap. One thing I really like is that when you are listening to 2 channel analog, it passes the sound to both the CD outputs as well as to the main Left/Right of the 5.1 channel outputs, so you don't have to change the source selector when you change soundtracks. The Toshiba didn't do this.

I have not experienced DTS yet, as this unit does not decode DTS, it passes a DTS bitstream. Unfortunately, my receiver does not have a DTS decoder either, but my next one will :D

Strength:

5 disc changer,CD sound quality,DD,dts, great picture and sound, remote works the volume on my Denon receiver

Weakness:

none that I can find

Can't compare the Sony to the RCA,bought it for $200 at Circuit City.Sony was a Christmas suprise from my wife.

Sony is great so far,no sinc problems at all.I was using a Denon DCM 460 5 disc CD,but had the wife do a blind sound comparision(I have pairs of some CDs).After about 45 min.she said the Sony was the better, but not by much. She was supprised because she loves Denon. Those of you that THINK the Sony has a loud disc change have never heard the Denon. At 10 feet in a glass door cabinet its hardly noticeable.Passes dts without having to go into the menu(RCA wouldn't do that).
Great picture and sound.I have listened to CDs thru audio out(pcm)and digital out.On board dac's do a great job.
My HT:Denon AVR 2800,Echo 4720 w/DD out(dishnetwork),JVC S-7600U,Klipsch:Forte L&R,Heresy C,KSP-S6,2 custom built 12"subs stacked,5 year old 52"RCA with 2 matching RCA oak cabinets.

Strength:

Solid build, easy remote, DD *and* DTS (!) decoder built-in, S-link to other Sony components, quickly reads discs, in-use disc exhange

Weakness:

You can hear the disc turning when you are within @ 4ft of player

This is an excellent player, even if it had cost $100 more. The many options and functions are outstanding, and this is an easily navigable player with an even easier to use remote.

Odd blue light lets you know that you are getting digital output, so there's no guessing as to whether you are getting optimum sound output.

Also plays CDs MUCH better than my current Sony CD changer, which the DVP-C650D now has replaed.

Look hard enough at online retailers, and you can get this player for at least $160 off current (1/00) MSRP, like I did! Couple it with the amazing new Sony STR-DB930 receiver, and you have yourself a high-end HT system for a fraction of the cost you would pay for other products of equal quality.

Strength:

Quiet, smooth operation, easy setup, easy navigation, very quick startup, glich-free operation.

Weakness:

No support for CD-R (typical)

I bought this DVD player after a few bad experiences with Toshiba's DVD-changer, the 4109X. I found this to be an extremely reliable, quiet, and quick player with none of the headaches I've seen with other DVD players. It seems to play just about any DVD, regardless of it's condition.

The shuttle-jog feature is a little hard at first to get used to, but I would have to say that most features are handy and intuitively placed.

The picture is outstanding and jitter-free. Although there may have been a layer shift delay it certainly wasn't noticeable.

I could go on with all the features this thing has, but there is pleny of literature to cover that aspect. As for my experience with this DVD player, I highly recommend it.

Strength:

Audio, video and useful features

Weakness:

I'm still not sure about the jog shuttle, but that's a very minor complaint

I am extremely please with this player, although the $599 I paid for it seems to be more than a lot of you paid. But I feel it was more than worth every penny. I have this plugged into my Denon AVR-3300 with home theater setup and it's fantastic. I love mixing and matching DVD's and CD's, or just lining up 5 DVD's to watch one after the other.

The video is beautiful. The surround sound on DD/DTS movies is fantastic. CD's play as clear as a bell. My only complaint is that I would like simple ff/rew buttons in addition the the jog shuttle, but it's no big deal. There are some great features that I've actually found useful. The switching of audio/subtitles formats without pausing the movie is nice. The extensive bookmarking for 200 DVD's is great. The angle viewer is fantastic for the few DVD's I own with multiple angles. For instance, the SuperBowl 32 DVD (Broncos vs. Packers) was kind of pain before when choosing the various angles. Now I can see all 4 angles at the same time in motion and then choose which one I want to watch full screen. Pretty handy. These are just a few I really enjoy.

If you don't feel the need to spend $1500 on a player just for prestige, then give this player strong consideration. It's top notch. (Not a single problem after about 50 DVD's and numerous CD's.)

Strength:

Great picture. DTS. Good CD player.

I exchanged my Sony DVPC600 carousel player when this unit came out because I wanted the ability to decode DTS DVD's. Although very similar to the 600, even my wife agrees that the picture seems to be better with this unit - the blacks are blacker. The menu setup screens are slightly easier to use. We also enjoy playing music CD's randomly with the 5-disk carousel.
I have it connected to a Sony STRDB930 receiver, Toshiba 32" TV, And Energy speakers.
