Strength:

Great Picture, Great Sound, Loaded with Features

Weakness:

Loud Motor, JOG Switch, Disc Explorer is Useless, Limited Disc Naming

I have been building a Home Theater for about a year. This is a great DVD/CD player. It had everything I wanted in a player, except for the shortcoming of not reading CD-R. It will read CD-RW though. I don't know what the difference is? I got the unit in June and it has worked flawlessly since then. I have the audio going through a Sony STR-DE945 receiver to Bose Accoustimas 15 speakers. The sound is unbelieveable. To sit and listen to the Eagles or Tina Turner in DTS is better than anything I have ever heard recorded and as close to being there as you can get. The video is through component to a Sony Wega 36" XBR TV. Once the set is properly adjusted the picture is best I have seen. (until I saw the new Wega XBR with digital input).
Great unit. 4 star for overall though because of the inability to read CD-R

This is a fantastic unit. Got mine at Best Buy before Christmas for $512. For a great review, read http://www.dvdfile.com/review/hardware/players/sony_c650d.htm. It says it all, plus it compares it to the Panasonic 5 disc model.

Strength:

Good video quality of anamorphic DVDs on 4x3 TV

Weakness:

Lip Sync issue

I was very disappointed to experience two samples of the DVPS-650D model which clearly exhibited the lip sync problem. Worse than that, there is an audio sync problem with the DVD analog output vs. the digital output through seperate DD5.1 processor. This means that the TV sound not sync'd with the stereo system sound.

The serial #'s of the the two player were in the
870000 - 870013 range.
Firmware rev: 2.400

Same problem happens with DVPS-550D

This problem just ruins the whole movie experience.

Strength:

Replaces my 5 disc CD changer; great picture and sound

Weakness:

When used as a CD player, it cuts off the first 1-2 seconds of the discs after changing from CD to CD

Great for the money. Feels solid. My only problem is this: Say I am listening to Disc 1. when Disc 1 ends, the tray spins to Disc 2. As Disc 2 begins to play, the first 1-2 seconds are snipped off! This problem recurs whenever the unit changes discs (e.g., random play). Has anyone else experienced this? I'm giving the unit 3 stars until this issue is resolved.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Jog shuttle remote, the ability to press disc number instead of "disc skip" button

Weakness:

This DVD player is phenominal! I have yet to have a problem from it.
I am mainly writing this review in response to the retards that are complaining about the machines inability to read CDR/W's. It is a DVD player. I understand how this could be problematic if you purchased this as a replacement for an old VCR and CD player; however, to complain that it does not read CDR/W like your old dedicated CD player, is like complaining that it won't record like your old VCR. Get real. This is one of the best DVD players you can buy for overall picture and sound quality.
The guy who was complaining about it the unit being region coded, what is that all about? It says it right in the box that it is for region 1 coded discs only. Just like 99 perecent of the DVD players sold in the U.S.
To all the people that complained: next time do a little bit of research before you buy the product. You only make yourself look like an idiot when you complain about stuff that the manual, or the outside of the box indicates the player is cable or incabable of.

Strength:

Picture quality

Weakness:

the enter botton in the remote can be a hellish experience

I love this player's picture quality, very sharp, beautiful color, and I love the depth in the picture. The sound is alright in the stereo mode, and fantastic in the digital AC3 and DTS modes, smooth scanning. The ability to program dvds and cds altogether is very nice (not all dvd changers do this). I have the Denon 3300 working together with the player, and I love the sound and picture. I give this player the highest mark, because I rate this product on its own merits, not the dealers' way of doing bussines, which makes this site worthless. this is a review site, not a dealers' complaint page.

Strength:

Good features, easy to program, great picture, crisp sound

Weakness:

None so far

Have experienced none of the problems with lip syn mentioned in other reviews. Very happy with this unit. I traded up from the 330 after about a month. Got a great deal from my local stereo shoppe. As for the CD-R problem, I agree with Charles...buy the originals.

Strength:

straight forward manual, on-screen displays, good sound

This is a great dvd player loaded with several features that other players do not have: cd text, on screen displays, a jog shuttle on the remote.

The set-up process was a breeze as the aforementioned on-screen display walked you through speaker and output setup.

In contrast to my previous DVD player-the Panasonic DVD A110, this one has no problems playing dual-layered discs. For anyone out there who is unsure of a dual-layered disc, check out Austin Powers II.
