I finally plunged into the DVD world with this unit. I lucked out and got an open-box buy w/ a 4yr service warranty for $450. It didn't take long at all to install the player and in less than an hour I was watching the Matrix. There are tons of bells & whistles, which took some time to scour through. The jog dial on the remote was a bit annoying at first, but now I'm getting to like it. The CD controls aren't that great, but it's just a matter of time getting used to it. The unit also has a Dolby Digital/DTS encoder built-in, so you just need a reciever that can handle 5.1ch I/O. If you're looking for a DVD player that can also replace your CD changer, I'd looking into buying the Sony DVP-C650D.

Strength:

Excellent picture, great audio, DTS pass, passes the PLUNGE test

Weakness:

Noisy changer, but who the heck cares when you only play one disc at a time?
Doesn't fit in my component cabinet...

Had this baby a little over two weeks and have zero complaints. Top to bottom a solid performer.

No problems yet and I have run:
Austin Powers: TSWSM (layer change)
Matrix (always tough, no artifacts)
Saving Private Ryan DTS (all I can say is wow!)
The Mummy (no artifacts, great audio)

I have it connected to my Toshiba CN36Z71 through the component inputs and it is spectacular. It is one of the only Sony DVD players that is able to pass the PLUNGE test.

This is a perfect compliment to my system, except it doesn't fit in my component cabinet, it is way too deep.

Great unit for the money, paid $429 on the internet - great deal. Music quality is great and HT apppications are unbelievable, use the optical to receiver and you movie experiences come to life!

Can't figure out why Sony doesn't build a decent remote . . .how are you supposed to see these things in the dark?

This is in response to Luke. I to have experienced this cut off of 1-2 seconds of music on cd's. You must be using the optical output. It takes your receiver 1-2 seconds to recognize the optical output and translate it (at least thats what my receiver does-Onkyo 777-. You can solve this by using the analog output. Sure, you won't have "pure" digital sound, but when I compared the two outputs I was hard pressed to tell the difference (maybe it's my untrained ear?)

Strength:

5 discs, loads of outputs

Weakness:

loud

I have this player hooked up to my 36 XBR Trinitron via component video, and the picture is amazing, especially with the WEGA doing the anamorphic squeeze. The difference is noticable.

I've had it for approx. 6 months, and have never noticed any lip sync problems, something I'm usually very good at. I love the 5 disc capability, and though the rest of my system (receiver+speakers) was relatively cheap (sony low-end stuff), even CDs sound great. The built-in decoder is nice, though I don't utilize it.

Strength:

Excellent features and a great remote. The 5-disc carousel is a convenient feature. Shuffles individual tracks on audio CD's.

Weakness:

Locks-up and needs to be unplugged and replugged in in order to work again. Sony manual and service line are not very helpful.

I bought mine as an "open box" item at Circuit City, which knocked $100 off the price. As soon as I got it home and setup, it wouldn't play or do anything but flash and error code on the display (E2700). I called the Sony customer service number, which is a nightmare in itself, and was told that it needed to be serviced, no further explanation than that. I discovered that I could get it to work by unplugging and replugging in the power cord. After fighting with it for a week I broke down and took it back to Circuit City and exchanged it for a new model. After two weeks with no problems it has started "locking-up" again with other error codes. The same trick with the power cord fixes the problem, but I have decided to return it AGAIN and get another brand. Other than this, I was completely satisfied with the image quality and features. Seems to have a little trouble playing certain audio cd's (noise distortion). Needless to say, I expected much more from Sony and am sort of bummed that I have to return it.

My family has had the 650D for one week and have been giving it a work out to see if any problems would show up. I am running as many DVDs thru it as I can find to see if it has the famed lip sinc problem. After 8 plays of Lost in Space I am ready to kill the producers, but no lip sinc errors. In addition we have played Armagedon 3 times, The Truman Show 3 times, Blast From The Past 2 times and Twister once. So far so good. I have the Sony ES-50 receiver and the combo works well together. The Remote turns the DVD on automatically with one button and the system off button shuts it all down with one button. Very clear and dynamic home theater and music. The feeling of being there 'Theater Sound' is excellent. I had a hard time getting the same feel out of Prologic. It is great with CDs as well. I have the S-video going thru the receiver to a Toshiba 50" big screen and the component video going directly to the same TV. The component video is slightly sharper and slightly more colorful, but not very noticable. If you left the room and came back 2 minutes later you'ld never figure out which was on. If you freeze frame and go looking back and forth for fine detail it's there in the component signal. It can be programed to skip chapters (DVD) and tracts (CD) and will keep the programing if not unplugged. The remote is the same as on the 550D. I got mine at a discount durring a audio video show in Phoenix where Sony, Yamaha, etc. were running demo's of there equipment. The purchase was from Jerrys Audio @ $520 +Tax.

I will be be keeping this one.

Strength:

Incredible video/audio quality. Very nice menu system, remote, and extra features.

Weakness:

Loud disc changing, the universal Sony 'show how long the chapter is and not the movie' problem (or a problem to me, anyways), Does not play CD-R's

I've used this player for the past few months now and have ran quite a few discs from all different categories through the machine. Titles like Ghost in the Shell and Bugs Life (both transfer benchmarks imo) are incredible on this system without any of the problems I've seen with earlier units.
I definitely do not like the fact that Sony has removed the dual discrete pickup from all of its units except for the 7700. I don't believe it's something that added incredible amounts of cost to the unit, but rather something Sony omitted for personal reasons. Other than this I would say this is definitely the best all around unit on the market for anyone who is building a collection of DVD's. I can't tell you how many times I've slipped in several discs just out of pure laziness ;) 4 out of 5 because of the removal of dual discrete.

5 discs, great picture, sound, nice everything.

Weakness:

None that I can think of

Well I have had this thing for over a year now and I love it. I like the remote just fine the wheel is cool and I have no probs using remote what so ever. For all of those that are and are complaining about that, well thats they prob. The one thing I am not sure of that I can't seem to find out is if it is a progressive scan DVD player, I don't think it is but have not found anything to support either answer.
