Strength:

Much better than average picture quality dramatic improvement in sound quality made my system come alive.

Weakness:

no zoom but as of yet have not found a great need for it

Have used, reviewed & tested many other players with mixed results. My original dvd player a panasonic A-110 an entry level reference player at the time can't hold a candle to our sony dvp-c660.There are a few features almost all brands of players have that would be nice if included in a single player but overall the sony has the best combination of features at the price with the major improvement in picture and sound this player has exibited to me it's an outstanding value. My comments are not made as a new comer to home theather as we purchased our first pro logic system nearly 10 years ago and upgraded to digital in early 1998 with a complete system I feel I have a very good understanding of audio video components.

I've had no luck with Memorex or Imation CD-Rs but it can read Acer CD-RWs with no problem - so now I'm happy again...

Strength:

Good picture, good sound, convenient 5-disc changer

Weakness:

Noticable layer switching

The main reason I'm writing this review is to let everyone know that this player CAN play both CD-Rs and CD-RWs. When I first bought this DVD player, I had an old HP CD Writer (32x4x2x). To test the DVD player, I made both a CDRW audio disc and a CDR audio disc. I was able to play the CDRW without any problem (other than a slow startup time), but it would not recognize the CDR. However, I recently upgraded to a Yamaha 2100E (40x16x10x) CD Writer, and decided to do the test again. This time, The Sony DVD player was able to play both CDRW audio discs AND CDR audio discs.

I only have two complaints about this DVD player (now that I know it plays CDRs). The first is that from my experience thus far, layer switching has been VERY noticable. The picture and sound pause for about one second between layers. This is not a huge drawback, but it can be annoying. The other disappointment is that it will only read the first level of DVD/CD Text information (p. 32 in the manual). This means that if you have a CD which is encoded with CD-Text, this player will read the Title of the CD, but not the names of the individual tracks. Again, not a big deal.

As for the rest of the features of this DVD player, I am very happy with it. Sound and picture quality are both excellent. Spin-up times are good. Overall, I would definitely recommend this player to anyone who is in the market for one.

Just for reference, here is my setup: Sony 27V66 TV, Sony DE545 receiever, Sony C660 DVD player, Sony MF515 floor speakers (with upgraded crossover), and Sony CN290 surround speakers. (I am a college student, so I dont have the best equipment)

CD-R you know what

First off let me begin that it was very hard to find this product, since it is closing out. I heard about and read the reviews here, compared it to
what was out there, thought long and hard about it, and I choosed this DVD player
I like many of the people who bought this DVD player were looking into replacing there CD player with this guy. So did I. My old Sony
whatever-it-is had to be retired. This DVD player has been the beginning of my home theater updating.
First the bad
Does it play CD-R's and CD-RW's, no. At least none that I have seen. I heard that some kind of Memorex CD-RW's work, but I don't have
the time. This is the only reason that I almost bought the Pioneer (which costed less, can you say "quality"). This is the only thing that I just
don't understand why a pathetic GE player can play CD-R's, but not Sony.
Yes there is no zoom, boo freakin' hoo! I never would be using it, and the quality wouldn't be so hot.
The remote does not have glow in the dark buttons, and it does not illuminate. If this is important, than just go out and buy one. I personally
have no need for this.
Being nit picky, the opening mechanism is a little slow, or I am just to anxious.
Now the good news
The sound and picture are out of this world. For the price I paid, which I think my VCR costed more than, I have theater quality in my living
room.
The player is thin, and is built like a tank.
The new models that are coming out I was told by the salesman still wont play CD-R(W)'s or DVD-Audio, but Sony just found a way to make
them cheaper.
The player has some bells and whistles that you can use to impress your friends with, but I have never used them yet, and I probably wont.
All in all, if you have a lot of CD-R's and are looking for a DVD/CD player, do yourself a favor and read the reviews here before you buy this,
and post a complaint saying that it wont play CD-R's. This would not be the player for you. Here's a thought, buy a CD player! If you don't
even know what CD-R means than this is a fine DVD player. Shop around on the internet to get the cheapest price! Lets go digital had it for
$239.99 last time I looked at it.

Strength:

5 disc changer, good remote, sturdy construction

Weakness:

hissing

I'd have to say this changer has been somehwat of a let down for me. My wife originally bought me a JVC M567GD 3 disc changer for christmas, which i exchanged for the sony. the jvc was very sensative to fingerprints and scratches on discs and i had heard that sony's were much better in this respect. this is true, but the overall picture quality of the sony is (IMHO) inferior to the jvc.

the other thing that bugs me to no end about this changer is the high-pitched hissing sound it makes when playing dvds. the hissing doesn't come through the speakers, just from the console itself--but it's loud and very noticable, especially during quiet dialog scenes on dvds. thankfully, the noise disappears on regular cds.

speaking of which, this model WILL play cd-rw formatted cds. i've had the best luck with imation cd-rw, which seem to cost the same as most.

also on the plus side, the remote is well throught out, much better than the jvc. also, all features are accessible from both the remote and the console.

i've come to find that there really isn't much out there in the area of dvd changers. pioneer's got one, but it seemed cheaply made to me. toshiba's got one, but no one carries it. i guess if you absolutely have to have a dvd changer, you could do a lot worse than the sony. it plays cds and dvd's, so you can ditch your old cd player and have one componenet that plays both. convenient, but there are better players out there. better changers? not that i've seen.

on a side note, i bought this from outpost.com (CC and bestbuy were out of stock) and WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM OUTPOST AGAIN! yes, you get free shipping, but their return policy is for SH*T. I cut out the UPC code on the box it came in to send in for some free blockbuster rental coupons (which i still haven't gotten); later, when i started getting the hissing problem i wanted to exhange for a different model. outpost said that since the upc code was off teh box they wouldn't take it back--LAME!!!

Weakness:

Lack of media support

For the most part its a good player, although I dislike the power functionality, the remote could have been better. I have only been able to get Verbatim Datalife Plus CDRWs to work in it. I would like to know what other types of media (Brand and color) other people have been successful with.

Owner's Manual, Noisy Disc Exchanger

I am very happy with the performance of this DVD/CD player. The picture is "softer" than the Pioneer, which means that the adjustments on my TV using Video Essentials had to be adjusted.

The noisy transport is the only thing that I really do not like on the unit. However, the spinning disc is quieter than the Pioneer.

The manual does not explain the lights on the unit very well and I wish there was a setting to turn off the display.

Overall, very satisfied with the purchase.

Weakness:

Dosen't know what disks I put in it.

I bought this unit because I wanted to have a DVD player and a CD changer without having two separate devices. So far I have found very little that I dislike about the 660. one complaint I have is that occasionally there is a slight pause when switching between seems. I don't know if that is a problem with the player or the DVD because it only does in once in a while and not on every movie.

The other thing I wish it did is auto load disks. I don't always remember which disks I put into it and it would be nice if I didn't have to go into disk explorer and manually load the disk to find out if it is a CD or DVD. I don't think it's a deal breaker though

All in all this is a good unit. It has every feature that I would want and it has not given me any errors or problems yet. I don't even mind the remote. there are three different ways to ff or rewind and once you figure out how they work it is not so bad

There are very few other products that offer a 5 disk (or more) DVD player at this price range so if that is what you are looking for this is a good buy.

Great picture, good sound

Weakness:

cd-r, stupid remote, bad cd configurations, long pause between layers

I orinally purchased the 550. I encountered the lip sync problems and tried to tell good guys that I needed the firmware upgrade. They didn't get it, because they were not able to fix the problem in 3 tries, I got a new unit because of their lemon policy. I upgraded to the 660 in an effort to eliminate my 5 disc changer with an all encompassing unit.

Because half my collection are cd-r's, it was obvious this unit would not work. Also, the remote is idiodic and completely non-intuitive. You cannot see it in the dark (how else do you watch movies) and the slow and scan configuration make no sense.

I was was used to the universal remote of the 550 with the the jog dial, and the 660's remote is a huge step down.

There is an noticeble (and annoying) pause in switching between layers. And the unit cannot tell the difference between cd's and dvd's when doing random play.

In addition, trying to set up random play is not nearly and intuitive as the old sony cd-players, flipping between 1 and all, selecting which discs to choose from.

It seems as though they put in the cd player as an afterthought, which does not make sense -- why else would someone buy a 5 disc changer -- for a Porky's marathon!?

I just switched to a Toshiba sd4205 -- hope it works out.
