Strength:

good while it lasted...

Weakness:

...but that wasn't long enough

This is an update to my review further down the page. A little after 18 months the thing just up-ed and died. One day working fine, and the next c:13's followed by "No Disc" error. Apparantly the laser assembly died, and the service agent wanted $$$ to fix. I managed to fix it myself in 15 minutes despite having no idea what i was doing. Still its acting a little dodgy. It was a nice little machine while it lasted, but now I've gone for something with a longer warranty. Its been hard trying to find something with the same range of features and usability tho. Not to mention a remote as nice.

Strength:

incredibly adjustable, not too difficult to master (for sony) set up and adjustment controls, terrific built in dd and dts proccessors, feature laden (for the dvd user, at least), reliable, low profile and cool look, plays all but the most badly damaged or filthy rented dvds without a hiccup. virtually no freeze up or obvious layer changes either. great picture!

Weakness:

no zoom, but that's just a toy feature anyway; does not seem to recognize powered sub connected to receiver when in stereo mode, but not a real problem as i have a sony es changer for cds, plus my main speakers are full range towers with plenty enough natural base.

extraordinary value and quality for price! tried both the toshiba 3205, dd only, and the 4205 cinima series, dd and dts, (a defective on dts setting, returned both), tried the sony, and thou the pix were comparable, sonically the sony was way out in front. more rear input/output flexibility than anything near its price at that time... my equipment: sony dvd c670 dvd changer. sony str ga8es receiver. sony tc-wr80es dual cassette deck. sony cdp 67es cd changer. panasonic lx 101 multi disc laser disc. onkyo cp 1130f turntable. technics sh-ac500d digital processor. (not using now, as i only have 1 digital source, the dvp 670, and dd an dts are built in, and the component rack is FULL) AR classic series 26 main towers. AR S-112ps powered sub. b&w 600IFS center. 2 Polk rm 1000 passive subs, connected to 2 Polk monitor 4.5 bookshelves as rear surrounds. 2 jvc hr-s3500 s-vhs vcrs. 1 proscan psvr87 vcr. 1 mitsubishi hs-u53 vcr. panasonic CTL -31858 direct view tv (panasonics 1st large screen tube set, 31", still with a flawless picture, 11 years after manufacture) Panamax 500 surge protector.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound. Titiling capability, Video Enhancement and 3-D virtual sound. Bit pricey

Weakness:

As CD player sound is adequate but get a good cd player for better sound.

As expected picture quality of the DVP-C670D is superb, it is DVD what would you expect. Sound is phenominal. I listen with headphones exclusively and if you want "in your face experience", try headphones. Feature laden, but miltichannel audio is lost on me. Video enhancement feature is questionable I see little difference and why 3 settings. Overall this a superb machine with stellar video performance and awesome sound. The quality is excellent with no audible sounds. Virtual 3D sound does work but each person will appreciate it differantly. Suggestion: Use mulitchannel setting for best results. Virtual headphone setting is a joke, it muddies the sound with a hollow blended sound, looses all directionality. For headphones, I use the multichannel and in this setting the sound will blow your socks off. All in all this machine rates a six but since there are only five stars I give it an unquestioning five. Two comments: to those that condem this player because it does not play cd-r disks, Get a cd player. I bought the sony DVP and intended to use for CD''s as well as DVD''s and the sound was adequate. Thought better and decided to invest in a cd player (Harmon/Kardon FL-8380 with HDCD) the H/K annialated the Sony DVP and it plays cd-r''s. You want to play CD''s, get a cd player. DVD playes are initially for DVD''s, CD are secondary, if not look at the back of the machine all those outputs ain''t for stereo. This player is flat out recommended as a DVD player and has Sony quality. System used: Harmon/Kardon HK 3370 Stereo Receiver Sony 32" WEGA TV Sennheiser HD 390 headphones

Strength:

Nice LED feedback. Good looking front panel with convenient buttons to control most functions.

Weakness:

It broke. Sound isn''t as nice as CD only Yahmaha 5-disc 585.

Really enjoyed it while it lasted. Unfortunately, I got the dreaded C13:00 error. My unit seems more in line with the great number of complaints filed under the DVP-S360 reviews. It failed right after the warranty expired, just like the vast majority of the S360s did. I''m glad to hear that this failure is not as pervasive in this model as the 360. Enjoy. I just bought a Yahmaha 585 for CD (only) play and I feel that the CD playback in the 585 is better than the Sony. (But that may be sour grapes since the Sony failed so abruptly. No, seriously, the Yamaha does sound appreciably better.)

Strength:

Sturdy, reliable, good quality all round unit - at a good price.

Weakness:

Needs to be 'broken in'.

I got this unit after reading all the reviews here and finding it on sale for a decent price. The majority of reviews on here are a clear indication of what the unit is like.... especially the 'breaking in' period. My unit used to give C:13 errors with brand new dvd's the first time I tried to play them pretty much everytime (rentals were perfect).

However the whole machine couldn't be more quiet. You can barely hear it with your head right next to it.

Great picture quality and great sound, better price.

Strength:

Quite a quiet carousel, impressive and functional remote, sleek kate moss design

Weakness:

A triffle expensive, unsightly stickers, slow loading disc info

When I began shopping for a DVD/CD player the Panasonic DVD-CV50 model was recommended to me. I tried it for 48hrs then took it back. Firstly, when I took it out of the box the remote and machine struck me as cheap looking.Connected it up and noticed the LOUD grating noise of the carousel. Had to push buttons twice to get a response. When I paused a CD it would restart at a slower speed. Furthermore I noticed some skipping.Maybe I got a lemon but read the reviews here on the C670D and bought it.
Rahtid!! What a difference. A nice sleek machine with a no nonsense remote. The sound of CDs and the quality of the DVD playback is excellent.Works well with my Sony TV. Even without reading the manual everything was intuitive.Tons of features (some I may never use).
Highly recommended

Strength:

Built in Dolby Digital and dts decoders.
Build quality is excellent.
No drive noise problems like other 2000 Sonys.

Weakness:

Unable to play CD-R and CD-RW.
"Clunking" noise made when changing discs.

This is an excellent DVD player for those looking for a 5 disc DVD changer and needing dts and/or Dolby Digital decoding built into it.

Build quality of the product is excellent. The drive is whisper quiet when playing a disc unlike other 2000 model Sonys. The GUI interface is well laid out and the remote is easy to use.

Replaced my two year old single disc DVD player (gave it to a family member) and almost 12 year old Sony 5 disc CD changer which was working fine with the DVP670.

Also ordered mine from Onecall.com. Received in two days and double boxed shipped via FedEx in great condition.

Strength:

DTS Decoder.
Dolby Digital Decoder.
Excellent picture.
5.1 Outputs.
Coazial and Optical audio outputs.
RCA, S-Video and compenent video outputs.
Both DTS and Dolby Digital suround sound effect from the on-board decoders is output through the 5.1 analog RCA connections to an AC-3 ready amplifier that does not have decoders.

Weakness:

Apparently does not play CD-R discs.

If you read the other review by Dave, you may be surprised to learn that I posted that. Well, I was wrong in what I said. Or perhaps premature. Anyhow, I was having trouble getting the DTS feature to work because the manual is not clear. A call to Sony's product Support people to clarify this told me that I could only get DTS through the coaxial or optical outputs, not through the RCA 5.1 connections. So I posted the other very critical review. The local Sony Store (bless'em!), however said "No way, Product Support is wrong - you CAN get DTS through the 5.1 connections" and they got it working for me!!

So I am here to say that my other review is dead wrong. Everyone else here loves this machine. You should believe them. I love it and feel like a heel for what I said!!! But at the same time I am delighted that I bought this machine and got it working. This machine is worth every penny. The picture and sound are simply spectacular and after a bit of playing with the unit, the menus become quite easy to follow.

Some folks reported a noisy whine from their 670D unit when playing discs - I am happy to report that mine is perfectly silent.

Some folks are concerned that this unit cannot play a CD-R. For me that is not a problem as I bought this unit primarily as a DVD player and my 10 year old Sony 5 Disc CD player is running just as well now as it did when I first took it out of the box. And that one will play my CD-Rs. If you are concerned about this you should also try a CD-RW. Some DVD players that won't play CD-Rs will play CD-RWs.

I still don't like the manual though!

Thanks Sony!
A Happy Hot Headed Customer

PS: Can the web site guys here remove my previous ratings from the overall score calculation? The comments should stand (when read in conjunction with these) but the low star ratings I previously gave are no longer appropriate. 5 Stars all the way for the 670D!

Strength:

compact size,

Weakness:

won't auto play DVDs, NO CDR's!!!!

Of course the DVD picture is great, the remote is like most,
hard until you're familiar.

I love and have a ton of Sony stuff from portables, car,
home, etc, but............

NO CDR CAPABILITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I make copies of music to have at work, in the cars, at home
etc. It sure is nice to have a clean backup when the 3 year old plays frisbee with the original. Now I guess I have to put my older carousel in my entertainment unit along
with this thing?
