Strength:

Excellent Picture & sound.

Weakness:

Still looking!

I just picked up this unit over the weekend. I'm extremely happy with this purchase, so far. This DVD player is feature packed and is very user friendly. Even thought the manual states that this unit cannot play CD-Rs, CD-RWs, CD-ROMs or Photo CDs this unit does play CD-RWs(thank god)...is this typical?

Strength:

Fabulous picture and sound quality. Quality construction and great looks. Ease of use. Virtually plug and play.

Weakness:

none that I have found yet.

Awesome. I have never owned a DVD player until this one so I don't really have anything to compare it. I do know that it kills VHS. Picture quality is fabulous and so is the sound. I don't even have it hooked up to my yamaha receiver yet and it makes my junk sony receiver sound good. I have been totally blown away by this DVD player. It is Awesome.

Strength:

The remote; the disc exchange feature; built-in decoders for bothe DD and DTS; being able to load your discs into memory.

Weakness:

If anything, it doesn't play CD-R discs. But I have a friend who swears that with the right burning software you can make it work. Most DVD/CD players don't say they take CD-R discs but to me this is no reason to deduct from my overall rating.

I use this hand in hand with the Sony 777ES and it performs like a dream. I have connected it via the digital coaxial connection from Monster Cable. I also use a Monster Cable component video cable to my Toshiba Cinema series TV. If you are interested in a new 5 disc CD player or a new DVD player, you owe it to yourself to look into this machine. I do not forsee any future problems and enjoy a multitude of new features that I did not have on my previous machine. Look to Onecall.com for a good price. I paid $360 plus $15 for shipping and I received from the west coast in less than 48 hours. Alot of companies ship UPS but Onecall uses FEDEX an both my Sony 777ES and my DVP-C670D came without even a dent in the box.

Strength:

Great Picture quality, ease of use, Superb sound quality, Remote

Weakness:

none

The setup for this player was easy enough, just plug the cables into the right rca outlet. I did, however, experience a greenish hew covering most of the screen, but it was not due to the DVD player, but instead to interference presented by a loose RCA plug next to my Component Video ins. The Dolby Digital sound is superb and the picture quality on component inputs is leaps and bounds above the competition. The built in DTS decoder doesn't hurt either... All and all, a great player with no annoying drive noise.

Strength:

Sturdy build, great remote, nice features, great pictuer and sound, plays all DVDs tried, wroks well with other Sony components.

Weakness:

Disk Explorer (to see what is in each of your 5 spaces) is a little slow, if you sit real close your can hear the motor spin, does not play CDR (I think)

Overall a great machine, I am glad I bought it. You can hear motor if yyou sit real close, but at normal viewing distance you can't hear a thing. I highly recommend.

Strength:

Everything is great except for one thing...

Weakness:

What the hell? No CD-R support!!! Are you kidding me?

I would have purchased another unit if I knew it didn't play CD-Rs. That's a big disappointment. Even the crappiest of the crap players can handle CD-Rs. You'd think this would be a no-brainer for Sony.

Strength:

All possible types of output connections , DD & DTS decoders built in, 5 disc carousel

Weakness:

Clunk-Clunk noise when changing discs, time taken to change discs, white line on top of picture when viewing in widescreen mode, won't open carousel all the time!

I brought this because I had a Pioneer single CD player and wanted a multi-disc DVD player which could let me play CDs in shuffle (random) mode as well. So far I've been reasonably happy with this unit except for the weaknesses mentioned above. First there is definitely the clunk-clunk when it's changing discs in shuffle mode - mind you, it doesn't do this everytime but does do it a lot of the time. I've also noticed that sometimes when it's playing in shuffle mode, it can be several seconds before the next track on another CD starts playing - it seems to take ages when changing disks. I've definitely seen faster changers around (when compared to some other muti-disc CD changers).
The white line on the top of the picture is quite annoying and I'm forced to watch some movies in full screen mode just to avoid it! The guy at the shop where I bought it said that it was because of the age of my TV...???
And lastly, the tray open button doesn't seem to work everytime either - it sometimes take two or three presses before the tray finally opens.
Despite all these issues, I'm still quite pleased with this player mainly because it has all the connections around the back that I'm ever likely to need to connect to connect to anything on the other end. Other brands that I compared against didn't have nearly as many types of connections.

The rest of my gear :

Sony STR-DB940 AV Receiver
Sony F29 29" TV
JBL MRV 308 Fronts
JBL MR Centre
JBL MR25 Rears
Sony SAWM40 Sub

Because of the above "weaknesses", I'm unable to give it 5*s but it definitely deserves at least 4s.

Strength:

Audio and video quality, DTS, ease of use, stream-lined look

Weakness:

doesn't play cd-r (apparently)

If you're looking for a dvd/cd changer, you could do much worse than the Sony C670D. It does a great job with cd's, and dvd's look terrific (and with DTS-encoded dvd's, it is an awesome experience). Disc changing happens pretty quickly, which is a plus. I am using this machine as a cd player as well as dvd's (replacing a first generation, 16-year-old Nakamichi OMS-7), so I was very interested in how it played cd's. It sounds as good, if not better, than the Nak that it is replacing. Apparently it does not play cd-r's, but that is not a big deal to me--I'm pretty interested in following copyright law.

As an aside, there are several other reviewers who have mentioned experiencing a momentary pause while watching a movie--I have also experienced this phenomenon, and it has only occured on dual layer dvd's which, strangely enough, warn you that a momentary pause may occur when switching layers. Because of this I would assume that most machines would respond that way, so don't dismiss the 670 because of that "problem."

In short, this is an excellent player of movies and music--and the "changer" aspect is a nice little bonus. I would highly recommend this player. I'd give it 4.5 stars, but I can't--so I'll round up.

My equipment:

Marantz AV-7000 receiver
Sony DVP-C670D dvd/cd changer
Paradigm Mini Monitors
CC-170 center
Atoms (surround)
PS-10 sub.
