Strength:

Great features, DTS decoder built in, great remote, plenty of hook up options.

Weakness:

not many. see my comments below.

With some *RENTED* DVDs there is a noticeable high pitch "whine" coming from the machine during play. I do NOT know if this noise would exist in other players. The noise is NOT present with any of my own DVDs or CDs. I suspect rented discs to be damaged or warped, somehow causing the noise.

Other than that the player is perfect. I have not noticed any freezing or pausing during play, or any of the other problems noted in other reviews. The "white line" problem noted in another review may or may not be a function of the player - this needs to be verified on a display that is designed to operate in 16:9 mode. My Sony KV27V40 is not, and when I use the "anamorphic squeeze" trick I too see a white line at the upper edge.

The menus are very intuitive, access time is quick, video quality if superb. The remote is very easy to use and is great for Sony TVs.

Does anyone know how well the 670D compares to the 650D?? if so, please email me at jsterk1@yahoo.com.

Weakness:

None known (see below)

Ive had this player for a year now, and have postponed a review until now.Initially I was very dissapointed with this player. Out of the box, the remote was very insensitive and I had to get within a few feet of the player before it would respond. I sent the player to Sony for a fix, and when I got it back, it was in almost the same condition as when I sent it.(Sony sent a note stating "nothing wrong") Also the player skipped chapters, froze and pixilated on approx. every other rental dvd. When I purchased the player I also bought a 3 year warranty because of my last experience with the Panasonic A110. Anyway, I decided to keep the player a while this time around expecting it to go into complete failure at anytime. Just the opposite happened. The player kept getting better and better, and at this point in time it is what I would describe as "perfect". This episode with the Sony may be a perfect example of BREAK-IN, I would never have beleived it had someone suggested it to me. Do I love this Sony? you bet. The changer feature and the ability to change the audio on the fly is very addicting. There is also a myraid of other features too numerous to mention, and are of less importance to me. Do I recommend this player? Of Course. Would I buy this player again if I had a second chance? Absolutly.Audio and Video performance are flawless on this Sony and let me suggest to anyone buying a DVDP of any brand , If you have problems out-o- the box, give your player a little time before taking advantage of your warranty, it may need a few dvd's run through it. Because of the initial worries and the fact I've only had this player a year ,I'll give it 4 stars for now with an impending 5 stars in two more years if it is truly worthy.

Strength:

Tons of features, Dolby/DTS decode, excellent picture quality,

Weakness:

Typical SONY remote- big with a million tiny buttons.

At $200 I have a 5 disc DVD changer to drive my home theatre system. It performs flawlessly, provides a great pictures, has all the buzzers & bells you would expect or require these days.

My only complaint would be something that I've experienced with Sony products for years. The remotes are typically a 40lb box decked out with more buttons than the solar system has stars. Acknowledging that it is great to have the ability to perform many functions without leaving the butt-imprint on the couch- the presentation could be better. Either follow the approach of having more menus on screen or limit what can be done with a remote would be my vote.

Unless your level of tolerance for such things is less than mine, you probably will be very satisfied with this product. I certainly am.

Strength:

Good picture quality

Weakness:

Crappy front panel buttons sometimes require several presses to work, clunky when changing discs

NEWS FLASH! Just to let everyone know that you CAN play CD-R on this player - I am listening to one now. Someone way down the list mentioned that Princo brand CD-R's may work - they do.

Anyway, I've reviewed this before, so that's it.

Strength:

Excellent video quality, Excellent sound quality, Tons of features, Dolby Digital Decoder, DTS decoding, Remote control, Construction of product, Audio/Visual outputs.

Weakness:

The unit will not play CD-R's.

I have used this product for over a year and I have never had any problems with this DVD unit. It handles scratchy / rented DVD’s very well compared to other DVD players out on the market. The picture and sound quality is excellent. I am very glad I bought this unit.

Got this unit for Xmas and am very pleased with it. Coupled to my Denon AVR-4800 using optical cable it is STUNNING! I am a little pissed off that it won't play my CD-R disks, but placed an order for 100 Princo CD-Rs, which are REALLY cheap (.35 apiece) and will transfer everything to those so this unit will play them. Watching DVDs is so much better than before with my cheap Toshiba. Sound is incredible, picture is great and it takes the place of my old Sony CD changer and Toshiba single DVD player, so less clutter in my entertainment center. The only thing I wish it did is play MP3 cd-rs. That would make this machine even better than it is already.

Strength:

5 disc,DTS,excellent picture and menue display

Weakness:

noisy sometimes, does not function well when first turned on from cold. Tray does not always open first time.

Looked around for a DVD that would play several disc and this 5 disc machine suited me. Was only just released in New Zealand Aug 2000. Was dissapointed at first didn't play disc very well and was noisy. Put in new clean DVDs and kept comming up with C-13, which meant the disc was dirty.
Would do this espically when first turned on from cold. The player is fine after playing disc for several minutes.
Also had trouble reconising the difference between CDs and DVDs. You had to take the CDs out before I could get a DVD to play.
As I have read in other reviews this player improved over time. I have been using this machine for over a year now and everything is fine now with no major problems. Very happy with my purchase, reccomended buying.

Strength:

exellent host of features

Weakness:

not playing cd/r's

Ive notied that alot of the reviews on this site are complaining of a slight 2 second pause in the middle of a movie. Well let me just explain something to all people new to the world of dvd.Movies on dvd come are recorded on a single layer disc or a double layer disk.THis means that on the surface of a double layered disk there is a second layer of infomation burnt underneath the layer you can see on the surface of the disk. The pause you experiance is the change between these two layers and will only ocour on a double layered disk. As it happens it will also ocour on any dvd player. So my point being that this is an exelent player,( ive had mine for two years and have had no problems what so ever )for a two second pause that is caused by the way the disk is recored.
