Strength:

Looks nice

Weakness:

Noisy rotator and stepper motor -- awkward VCD searching, and will only play Cyanine type 0 CD-R media

Overall, I like the player, except...

However, both the stepper and the rotator motor are noisier than they should be. Luckily I'm not a teenager and the player is more than 3 feet away from me when I use it.

I also knew that the manual said it didn't support CD-R's, but I assumed that it was just a legal disclaimer owing to the fact that CD-R's are of diverse quality. However, I bought a 50 pack spindle of no name brand 74 minute green CD-R's (manufactured by Friendly CD-Tek Co. with the name Mr. Write) -- they worked fine. I didn't notice until the spindle ran out that other CD-R's did not work.

I have done much adventuring and found that these no name CD-R's are identified by CDRID in my CD-ROM drive as having media made of Cyanine Type 0.

****** TWO THINGS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO THINK ABOUT: (a) regular aluminum stamped CD-R's are identified as Cyanine Type 0; (b) the cheap green CD-R is _NOT_ made from the same media as a regular alumnimum stamped CD.

Thus, I conclude that Sony intentionally disabled the playing of CD-R's in this unit whenever they can be identified. And for that, I will not forgive them. I will never buy another Sony product, song, or movie again.

CD-R users - Verbatim Datalife Plus CD-RWs will work reliably on this model. They MUST be RWs, I have found no CD-Rs that work on this player.

Strength:

Excellent sound quality

Weakness:

Noisy, slow, no CD-Rs

Since this is my first DVD player, I may be expecting too much. But if this is a high quality machine, I'm disappointed in the technology. It seems capable of things I may never use in the areas of video and sound (which is nice to have just in case), but simple things like construction were overlooked. The machine IS noisy, and the level of noise depends on the DVD... it goes from a light squeaking with most DVDs to a downright annoying hissing with rented DVDs. I can muffle it adequately by closing the door on my entertainment center, but that shouldn't be necessary. And SLOW, my god is this thing slow. Between power save (I assume) and autoplay, you have to hit the "open" button about 5 times to get the damn thing to open (and wait about 10 seconds). I intended this machine to replace my older CD changer, but it will not because it won't play CD-Rs (an obviously intended design flaw that I was unaware of when I bought it). And if you want to have your DVD player upgraded to play Region 2 discs (something I recently found the need for), then don't buy Sony. Also, I have noticed what many others have, a short 2 second pause during a movie. It happens with almost every movie I have, and has happened with enough of them that I am convinced it is the player, not the discs.
Anybody want to buy a cheap Sony C670D?

Strength:

Built-in Decoder, Picture Quality, Slim Profile for a DVD Changer.

Weakness:

None

I've been very happy with this unit since I bought it just over a month ago. I'm not an electronic engineer so I was a little concerned about the difficulty in hooking it up to my Nakamichi AV500 receiver (5.1 ready with inputs but no built-in decoder) - it was a snap (less than 15 minutes). I didn't have room for this and my Nakamichi CD changer so I sold the Nak and I'm using this for my audio cd's - it works and sounds as good or better than the Nak. The remote is excellent and easy to operate and the picture quality is outstanding. It has more features than I need (i.e. parental control, etc.) but who cares. Sears was asking $449 like everyone (Circuit City, Best Buy, et al) else but Sears matched Crazy Eddie's web price after I showed them a printout from them I brought with me. One thing I learned long ago - don't accept the tagged prices - most salespeople (or their supervisor) have haggling room.

Strength:

Built in DTS + Dolby Digital Decoder, tons of features and A/V outs, excellent remote

Weakness:

Cannot play CDR's

I haven't had a single problem with this player. I wanted a 5 disc changer to replace an old CD player. I bought it knowing it wouldn't play CDR's but I like the original CD's anyways.

There are so many things I can tweak on this thing that I'll probably never use some of them. Picture is very crisp and DTS surround sound is amazing. It takes some time to get optimum sound especially if you have a mix of speaker brands like me. Some DVD's have a short 2 second pause but I think it's the DVD and not the player. If you have a receiver with a Dolby Digital decoder then save yourself some money and go for a cheaper model.

It does autoplay DVD's, CD's, this feature should be turned on by default.

Strength:

Great Sound/Picture

Weakness:

Quality problem

The sound and picture quality that this player gives are excellent. The on-screen menu features are easy to use and very informative. I have this hooked up to a Sony 36FS16 Wega 36 inch TV, Sony STR-DE545 receiver, Sony VAE315 and SONY SS-MB215 speakers.
The Sony DVP-C670D I bought never worked with the remote and had tough time making it work from the unit with no remote. Got a replacement and within a week skips, freezes and most of the time fails to recognize the DVD/CD even with new DVD/CD. If it recognizes after about 10 tries, comes-up with C13:00 in the display - the manual instructs to clean the disk, even with new DVD/CD. Will settle for a refund and will buy other model.
I like Sony products and I still like my Sony 36FS16 Wega 36 inch TV, Sony STR-DE545 receiver, Sony VAE315 and SONY SS-MB215 speakers as they are excellent but I got Sony DVP-C670D POOR quality DVD player TWICE !!

Strength:

Great sound depth and Video picture compared to others I viewed.

Weakness:

The unit seems to stall or freeze momentarily during play, even with brand new discs. Won't play CD-R discs. Can't read the remote in the dark.

I have been through four of these players and each one stalls or freezes momentarily in the middle of movies. Interestingly enough, after watching these movies several times to determine why this happens, I discovered the stall never happens at the same place in the movie. I'm no Serlock Holmes but this clearly indicates to me that it is not flaws in the disc as Salespeople have suggested. To date, this unit has ruined every movie I watched. Not that the disc is ruined, but I love to get into movies and let them take me away. This stalling or freezing jerks me back into reality like the crys of an infant when sitting at the local theater. Bummed Out! Since this is my first DVD player it leads me to ask, does this momentary stall or freeze happen in all players or just the Sony players I buy?

Strength:

Great looker (and slimmer design than some single disk players) heaps of function, heaps of connections, great remote with night glowing buttons. Overall technically cool looking. Excellent picture and sound quality.

Weakness:

Very rare pause on some dvd disks when changing to next chapter while playing

Any weaknesses are too minor to devalue the player, like pause between chapters(very, very rare), somewhat slow loading in disk explorer. That's about it. If you say the mechanism is loud your're watching the movie with no sound.

The player looks great-technically cool with a quality feel to it. On the player are a number of LEDs' and even a blue one which i hear is quite expensive. The remote has a cool red light up buttom when runing frame by frame, is packed with all the buttons to keep you in the chair and can control volume on other receivers/amps.

If you take the time to label your disk for the disk explorer it is a very cool and usefull function.

On the back of the player the connections are suitable for all AV components featuring optical, coax and RGB outputs to your TV, so all you have is one cord to your receiver and 3 RGB plugs for supreme color and visual quality.

Excellent player

ps: if you complain because it doesn't play copied CD's, dont forget this is primarily a DVD player and I would be surprised if you dont have a standard CD player for that.

Strength:

great picture, holds 5 DVD's, Sony quality

Weakness:

Doesn't play CD-R's

This is a great unit. The only weakness is that it does not play CD-R's. It will however work with CD-RW's. Specifically I have recorded music to a Memorex Platinum CD-RW and it has worked perfectly. I have also seen several people who claim that Princo brand CD-R's will work with Sony DVD players that would normally not play any CD-R's.

Strength:

5 Disc, Dolby Digital decoder, picture quality.

Weakness:

DTS decoder only outputs through coaxial and optical connections. If your amplifier does not have these connections you CANNOT enjoy DTS surround sound even though this machine has a DTS decoder.

Manual is horribly over-complicated.

I read many glowing reviews of this machine before purchasing it. In fact, I purchased it largely on the strength of those reviews. My prime desire was to make use of the DTS decoder to hear the DTS surround sound that is becoming more and more prevalent on current DVDs. I discussed this at length with the staff at my local SONY Store. I advised them that I had a Sony STR-DE-515 amplifier which is AC-3 ready and has the appropriate 5.1 connections on the rear of the unit. It DOES NOT have optical or coaxial audio connections. When I purchased the amp 2 years earlier at the same local SONY Store, I was assured that I would be able to take advantage of whatever future audio decoders were on-board a future SONY DVD player. Recently last week, SONY Store staff advised me that I would be able to connect the DVD player to the amplifier using those 5.1 connections, and that I would be able to hear BOTH Dolby Digital AND DTS surround sound from the appropriately encoded DVDs. THAT IS INCORRECT. While the player will output Dolby Surround through the 5.1 connections, it WILL NOT output DTS surround through those connections. According to SONY Product Support, DTS surround sound is output ONLY through the coaxial and optical audio connection points. If you want to hear DTS surround sound, you MUST HAVE optical OR coaxial DVD audio connections on your amplifier. Otherwise, the unit defaults to the lower quality Dolby Digital while playing DTS DVDs.

Also, the manual is needlessly complicated. I can find no clear indication in the manual that DTS surround is only provided through optical or coaxial connections (This information comes to me first hand through a phone call today to SONY Product Support). Indeed, as inclusion of Dolby and DTS decoders are prime features of this unit, the manual should CLEARLY STATE the amplifier specifications needed to support those features properly. Having read other reviews on this page, it seems to me that there are many other users of this machine who are falsely under the impression that their 670D is outputting DTS through the 5.1 connections.

I will most likely be returning the unit, or as SONY has provided such bad advice, will insist that they upgrade my amplifier at no charge to one with the necessary coaxial and optical audio DVD connections.
