I purchased this unit to replace a single CD piece-o-crap that I've had for 8 years. From a CD audio quality perspective, I can say that this unit is superior to the previous unit.

DVD quality is very good in my book, although I don't claim to be an expert. All I know is that is looks great for my personal taste. I am working on a comparison between the DD/DTS decoders built in to this unit versus the ones built into my Denon receiver.

I have not experienced either the high-pitched laser noise nor the carousel noise mentioned in other reviews. So far, so good! If you are looking for an inexpensive 5 CD/DVD changer and don't mind sacrificing that last 5 percent of possible quality, give this one a look. Happy shopping!

Strength:

Picture, sound, remote, and simply looks sharp.

Weakness:

Noisy when changing discs

Overall, I am very satisfied with this unit. The picture is great and the features are virtually endless. So far I haven't found a DVD it wouldn't play. (I don't use CDR/CDRW discs, so the fact that it won't play those is moot.)

The remote is almost perfect. The buttons glow very bright in low light situations, and seem to keep glowing forever. My only gripe about the remote is I wish the disc selection buttons were in a different location ... i.e. far away. More than often I seem to inadvertently change discs in the middle of a movie trying to access another button by feel in a dark room. Can really put a dent in flow of the movie.

Guess if I have to complain about anything else it's that titling the discs is a bit tedious, but that's very minor.

I'd have to recommend this unit to anyone looking for a feature-packed 5-disc player that has and does it all for a decent price.

Strength:

Loaded with ease of play features;DTS and Dolby Digital; illuminated remote: great sound and video quality

Weakness:

Lacks a zoom feature; apparently doesn't play CDR's; annoying noise from laser mechanism when playing DVD's

I have been looking for a 5-disc player to repace my single disc Hitachi. After having had the Toshiba and Panasonic models identified above in my home on trial, and being disappointed in both, this player has been a joy to use.
The Panasonic had very washed out sound and seemed clunky and slow when changing discs, particulary on random play - and what were they thinking with all those tacky lights on the front panel! The Toshiba had great sound(and is capable of HDCD as well) but I found the picture to be somewhat "pixelly".(By the way, I used component video and digital cable on all models).

The Sony seems to do everything well. It's a snap to set this player up and the menus flow logically. As mentioned, it has DTS and Dolby Digital built in as well as allowing you to set the sampling frequency to 96kHz/24bit(for what that's worth). DVD's sound crisp and clear, with great channel separation. CD's are clean and sharp. Sony has built in some neat video options - a video equalizer that adjusts the contrast and black levels and a digital video enhancer that allows you to adjust the crispness of the picture. And my favorite, you can set the Picture, Brightness, Color and Hue for each movie, through the player rather than having to mess with your TV settings. What a simple, great concept- this was new to me as I haven't seen this on other mid-priced players. And, of course, Sony is renowned for its play features - slow motion, fast forward, frame advance, etc. that is silky smooth. The remote, although somewhat bulky, is illuminated and gives you access to all the neat features that this player has(lots more that I haven't mentioned).

There was one disappointment with this player - when playing DVD's, the laser mechanism emitted quite a noticeable high pitch sound, even from 6-10 feet away. It bothered me a lot more than my kids, but they heard it too. I noticed in another review that someone else commented on this. Being stubborn, I took the unit back and had it replaced. With the second one, the noise is diminished quite a bit. I think there are so many positives with this player that if the problem had persisted I would have kept it anyways and probably purchased a stand with glass doors to mute the sound.

In terms of value, it probably is a little on the pricey side but, I think, well worth it. If you're looking for a well designed, mid-level product that has a long list of features, this seems to be an outstanding choice.

Strength:

I don't know

Weakness:

Does the DVP-c670d play cd-r and/or cd-rw disks?
I know the DVP-c650d does not and I was hoping that Sony's new player would but I cannot find any literature on this player that states that it would.

I chose to give the value rating a 5 because Sony usually manufactures good products, and I gave it an overall rating of three because if it doesn't play cd-r disks (my best of... disks) it doesn't deserve higher.

Strength:

5 disc exchange player. Dolby Digital and DTS decoders. Very quite. Slim & Sleek. Component Video Outputs, Coaxial & Optical outputs.

Weakness:

Does not send Coaxial and Optical digital signal simultaneously.

The Sony DVP-C670D DVD Changer is a great machine. It has DVD and CD labeling for up to 200 discs. Its easy to operate and best of all, its sleek like the rest of Sony's new line DVD players. Most impressive is the DTS decoder. With the DD/DTS decoders, you can connect them directly to a TV for those days you don't want to wake your neighbors. Both the DD/DTS decoders perform well. The change time between disc is about 3 to 5 seconds. It will display the remaining time of dvd's and cd's which is a great option. The setup menu is user friendly. The only flaw with this unit that I see is that is does not send a digital signal simultaneously to the coaxial and optical outputs. The importance of that is if you don't have a receiver with digital outputs. I would have liked to run a coaxial connection to the receiver and a optical connection to the minidisc player. Besides that small imperfection, I think this is an excellent choice for those entering the DVD market or looking to upgrade.

I just got this unit this weekend. I am extremely happy with this purchase. My Toshiba SD-3109 died about three weeks ago and I had to find a replacement unit. I purchased the Sears two year extended warranty and have never been happier that I did. Even though I was 1.5 years into the two year contract, Sears gave me complete credit for my purchase price on my Toshiba and I used those dollars to purchase this OUTSTANDING Sony unit.

Basically, The DVP-C670P Blows away the Toshiba in every way! The picture quality is much better. One of the bad traits on the Toshiba was, I guess, pixelization. I thought that the Toshiba picture was good, except that people's eyes always looked unnatural, very shimmery, especially during outside scene's. The Sony has none of this and a much more vibrant, but natural, looking picture.

The audio is also better on the Sony, (and it has a DTS decoder, HOO-RAH !!), I have noticed many audio nuances that just weren't processed by the Toshiba. It's the little things, like the bar scene in the Matrix, when we are looking at Neo and we know that Trinity is walking up behind him: You can hear her footsteps, as if she and Neo are Isolated from the greater noise in the room! I never heard this before, amybe I just noticed it for the first time, but I have watched this movie MANY times. I feel that Sony's Decoder is just better.

Please don't get me wrong I loved my Toshiba, it never let me down until fateful "Disc Loading" error day.

At this point three days into ownership, I give this unit 5 stars! (Five stars on Value if you can buy it for less than 370.00)

Looking for a 5 disk changer? This is a real good player for those who are not ready for progressive yet. I got this one for my second room mated with a 35" Sony TV. I sent it through some torture test before hooking it up to the 35" TV. I ran some test materials with my thrusty Sony 61HS10 (HD set) and I thought it passed the tests with flying colors. Initially I had bought the DVP-360, but I felt performance was not in par to what I have used to. I was using a DVP-S7000, and DVP-C850D for some time. So, I made some comparisons.

The 670D is sharper than the 7000, but not as sharp as 850D. In return, you get a truly silky image (it passes 480 lines of resolutioon with VE disk, also passes the Pluge test) that rivals the Toshiba 5109 which is a progressive player. Of course, it cannot removes the jaggies as well as the Toshiba, but it is real good for an interlaced player. The colors are the strength of this player. Reds are best I have seen, and green are unbelievable. The sound is, in my opinion as good as the 7000 and 850D. Compared to 360, it is by far better. I noticed the weakness of the 360 is a high degree of ringing it produces around edges that is absent in 670D. The 360 sounds brighter too. The 670 also passes the PCM 96 kHz/24 bit through its digital out which is absent in 360. So, it can serve as high quality CD as well. No, it cannot CD-R/CD-RW consistently. Along a very comprehensive menu system, there is a little feature that I found very interesting and make this player worthwhile considering along all the goodies it offers. This feature is called video enhancement. I know all the serious guys avoid enhancements, but this one is quite different in execution. It really gives you more detail without the expense of added deteriation like edge ringing or increased luminance noise. Playing the Bug's Life was a total revelations to me. I just loved this feature. So, at the end- Sony has offered another goooooood product with a reasonable price that is also nice to look at for its slim design.
