Strength:

Can be sold as scrap metal.

Weakness:

You can''t get much for it as scrap metal.

COMPLETELY DISSAPOINTED. I have the exactly the same problem as the other reviewer mentioned. The player will play for awhile and then glitches and comes up with a "Disk is dirty" error and cuts off the movie.. THIS IS NOT THE DISK SKIPING ---BECAUSE---I have a $500 version of sonys GOOD DVD players and it plays and works fine with all the DVDs I have. This one is a dud. Pay for what you want!!!!

Strength:

Very good usability.

Weakness:

No backlit remote (But I knew that when I bought it).

I''d have to agree with all of the positive reviews of this player. I''ve had mine for about 3 months and had absolutely NO problems with it. Easy set up, easy play, no skipping, no problems. Only problem is that it doesn''t have a backlit remote, but I knew that when I bought it. With all of the connections this player offers (composite, S-video, and component), the price, and the ease of use, you cannot beat it!

This is a follow-up to my original review I posted in may 2001 (in fact a second review of this product on this site) The player still performs flawlessly and exactly as expected. After reading some of the reviews I got the impression that some people truly don''t know what they''re talking about. This is an entry level player. You can buy it at Costco, for crying out loud!!! If you want audiophile quality spend over $1000 and perhaps you will be satisfied. When I read reviews stating that this player has a "terrible picture" that is worse than any vcr or when people mention color bleading or chroma upsampling error I get to wonder - are you running it with an old zenith fake wood floor console tv through your antenna cable??? You must be. Besides- do you even know what chroma upsampling error really is??? This player will have a slight pause when plying dual-layer discs. Any player will! You can calibrate it from the service menu, but you are better off leaving it alone (specially the ones with a bleeding colors) The dvds from Blockbusters are generally scratched, dirty and covered with popcorn oil all the casual viewers like you have left on them, so don''t be surprised that your player skips. I have a collection of over 100 dvds and NONE of them causes this player to skip or freeze. Yet it does it on every single dvd that was abused, scratched, spit on, given to your dog as a toy etc. Agai, so did all the other players I had. It doesn''t play cdr-r but it was happy with cd-rw discs I tried. It doesn''t play mp3 or your pirated vcds, as they are cd-rs too! But all of this is clearly stated in its specs, on the box and on the Sony website, so what did you expect? Besides, all of those functions are readilly available with your garden variety apex POS -go get one and see how happy it will make you. This is an excellent player. The ones that quit working after a certain period of time were obviously defective and should be returned or fixed under warranty. But it is NOT a reason to make it sound like it is a bad player. First of all you have to have some comparison to judge it fairly and I did. I still recommend it 100%.

This unit stopped working all together after 8 months of use. I get no disk errors or dirty disk errors on every DVD I put in it. In checking the web, I found this is not an unusual problem for these units. I found one site where 50 people have complained about the exact same problem. After contacting Sony, I am left even more disatisfied. They will not stand by their product and resolve the issue. Bottom line. Do not buy Sony DVD products. Their quality is not up to the usual Sony standards you might expect.

Flawless. Lots of USFUL features and skips all the fluff. Great Picture and Great CD sound too. Don''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''t go with all the goofball comments the suggest you have to spend big bucks. It''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s all in their heads. I guess they have to justify their stupidity somehow! Buy this one and buy some dvd''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s and cd''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s with the money you saved!

Weakness:

WON''T PLAY CD_R!!!!!

I like this unit... at least I did at first. I would say that it''s a great buy for the average dick and jane who rent DVDs or own them but not for someone who burns their own cd''s or video cd''s. This unit is the only piece of equipment I have ever used that will play CD-RW''s but WILL NOT PLAY CD_R''s.. what''s up with that??? I burn my own video cd''s (except SVCD)and they work great as long as I burn them onto a CD_RW, same with audio cd''s. It''s very irritating but seen as how I recieved the unit as a gift I guess I can''t complain too much. Although they could have put VCR controls on the remote as i have a sony VCR and now I get the remotes confused as they are practically identical.

Strength:

Nice design, easy to operate, good setup menus

Weakness:

Lack of CD-R and CD-RW playback support; no optical digital output. Freezes on some titles. Doesn't play some discs.

Doesn't play some dvds, shows that there is no disc in; doesn't play some video cds. Sometimes freezes on layer change for DVD-9.
I got an impression it is a very sensitive unit that you can't trust that it would do the right job when you need it most. I am going to sell it.
Of course it is a low end machine, but come on, I don't blame it for not playing CD-Rs or RWs, just play my dvds!
I am looking now at Pioneer DV-444-K, will buy that as the next.

Strength:

great audio and picture, features, universal remote, coaxial & optical digital outputs

Weakness:

SKIPPS !!

I wanted a Sony DVD player because I purchased the HT-DDW830 home theater to go along with it. Figured it would probably work better with all components being from the same manufacturer.

I loved that it has both digital outputs and component video. Even though I was using regular rca cables, the picture and sound seemed good. The thing I was frustrated with was that it SKIPPED twice while watching Jurassic Park 3. I had rented this and it could have been that I didn't clean the disc.

I decided to try two other products after this one: Panasonic's DVD-RV31UK and Sony's 5 disc DVP-NC600B. The plus on Panasonic's is that it plays practically everything and doesn't skip. The negative is that there is no coaxial output, the remote is horrible, and I'm not sure if it is compatible with my Sony home theater system. As for the product I am currently using, DVP-NC600B, so far no problems. Features are great and once I buy a digital cable (probably monster coaxial), I'm gonna test out DTS and Dolby Digital. Hopefully, it won't skip!

Strength:

GREAT DESIGN, AFFORDABLE, SUPERB PICTURE QUALITY

Weakness:

NONE SO FAR,

At this price I wouldn't expect much but this player has exceptional quality. It doesn't surprise me though SONY is known for providing reference picture quality at even thier lowest levels.

This model looks sleek and goes perfectly with my WEGA, there's not really much to say except it's a no brainer.

everyone is selling this unit at 199.00 which is nuts!

my sales guy TODD at www.jandr.com 800 221 8180 ext 1039 gave me a even better deal I'm completley satisfied and would highly reccomend it!

Strength:

great picture quality (through composite), dts output great.

Weakness:

doesnt read cd-r, kinda light (physically)

picked this piece up at futureshop the other day 'cause i was tired of running dvds through the computer. I was using s-video, but i bought a set of good component and an optical cable with the set. At first i wasnt too sure about the purchase, but after fooling around with the settings/menus, i got it set up very nicely and couldnt be more pleased with the picture quality. Im using it in conjunction with a panasonic tau, and the image the set produces is near flawless. Color is sharp and there is very little noticable pixle crawl (and even then only if u look for it). Sound out put seems very good, but id need better speakers to say precisely how good the output is.
