Strength:
Two scart inputs. User interface
Weakness:
The different manuals (6 languages!) did not describe the same model in terms of output/input connections. The French manual did not match the model I had bought (in France). Lacking an English version, I had to settle with the Swedish manual...again feeling blessed with my girlfriend who is Swedish ;-) I'd like to hear about real malfunctions, not design issues like "does not do MP3". I have had this player for a few months now and haven't used it extensively but in general I am satisfied with it. True, switching layers takes about one and a half second or so, but doesn't upset me that much. Also, I haven't tried the 6 audio channel sound, so maybe I jumped the gun posting a review? Since this is my first player, I wanted an allround, flexible player at a reasonable price. I think I got this. The two scart inputs, digital outputs and built-in Dolby Decoder allow for various configurations. Similar Products Used: None. Any recommendations for a matching receiver? I have been looking at the SONY STR-DE685... |

CDR, CDRW, VCD, Modified SVCD, XVCD, modified XSVCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW
Weakness:
You gotta modify SVCD and XSVCD (did I mention that ;) ) - visit www.vcdhelp.com for info on how to do this. No MP3. No software mod for region free (bug surprise - brand name almost never have this). The one that's floating around is only for a version modified by a UK company selling them. People complain about this product. They musta got lemons. There appears to be a number of lemons in this production series or alot of people who are confused. I've owned this machine since november 2001 and have been quite please. It does not have Mp3 but it can support VCD, modifid SVCD, XVCD and modified XSVCD plus it'll read the new DVDR, DVD-RW AND DVD+RW. Beat That! You've got three of the 4 major option for the new recordable mediums so we should be set to continue to use this as a player after we all get our DVDR standalones. To get this type of selection you'll either have to go very expensive (top of the line Sony) or very cheap (Apex). I've never had a problem with scratched DVD's and I have played some VERY scrathed dscs. The menu's are VERY confusing. And that's coming from a guy who modified his apex to be region free. That was easier than seting this up with my DD ready reciever. It's a good machine though. One of the few reasonable priced brand name machines that'll do XVCD. If you don't need this (or a built in DD decoder) the get something else but this works fine just test it for yourself during the return policy. Similar Products Used: RCA 51000P with DD decoder built-in. Apex 600a 9/99LH w/o decoder + MP3 Apex 1500 2001 w/o decoder + MP3 + stuff |

when compared to other dvd players, none. it won''''t outperform anything else.
Weakness:
great stall for dvd playback. playing cds is less than ideal. i find that this product has been getting to may many 5s. there is some great flaws with this player and i don''''t know if it is only my player or everyones. first of all when watching dvds there is a great stall in every movie. i know that this stall is created when the player has to adjust itself from one layer to another but on my player the delay is ridiculous, i mean like almost 2 seconds. 2 seconds might not seem alot but when your watching a dvd and the picture and audio stall for two seconds it becomes really anoying. second is its cd playback. it is very slow and changing tracks is very noisy. also it always has a hard time finding the first track. third is the fact i bought it 449 cdn and three months later the same store had it for 249 cdn. the dd decoder is completely useless cause its pretty difficult to find a receiver without one. lastly i cannot say anything bad about picture quality or sound quality, but these things benefit more from a godd receiver and tv rather than anything else. Strength:
Solidly builded, ease of use, many if not all home-theatres sound and images features you want.
Weakness:
Don''''t play MP3s but I consider a DVDP as being made to watch films... I hook my computer to my system for MP3s anyway.. This is my first DVD player. I have watched more than 50 films with it and I''''m fully satified with this unit. It is solidly builded and easy to use. As someone who just made the transition from VHS to DVD, I''''m very please with this product. After many research before buying it, I find this DVDP as the best price /quality deal on the market. |

Strength:
very good when working
Weakness:
As above. Bad design. I wonder why Sony has refused to respond to the numerous DVD player complains. This is my second Sony DVP NS400D in a month. The first one developed the `No Disk` and `C13:00` error after only there days of purchase and I had it replaced. The second one has stared behaving the same but only on same disks, which apparently play ok on other players. I experience pauses, skips and sometimes the player goes to power standby mode. It’s frustrating. I am in Kenya. My investigations locally so far indicate I am the only one with this problem on this model. Similar Products Used: various sony VCD |

Strength:
Dolby digital, dts, and on board 5.1 hookup. lots of adjustments for sound of any rooms. Many other features
Weakness:
none. I replace my old Sony DVD with this one. It a great machine, with the dolby digital, dts, and the on board 5.1 decoder, the price for this dvd machine is very reasonable. I use an optical output to my reciever, and this machine can perform with a very clear picture and the sound output is great with the home theater setup. The dolby digital and the dts would perform well with this machine. |

Strength:
Excellent video. Excellent sound, especially in CD-ROM formats. Easy to follow basic set-up. 5.1 feature is very good.
Weakness:
The on-screen menu is a bit confusing. One needs to refer to the manual and follow through the steps outlined. Also be sure to look at the bottom of the screen for the file name as your scroll down on-screen. The NS400D will certainly meet most people''s needs. The video is outstanding (s-video connections will suffice). I have played plenty of movies, and if there were any differences, it distinctly comes from the quality of the DVD, both in video as well as sound. As noted in other reviews, the DVD may well control the format you view in, and few DVD''s have the tv conversion format. The set-up is simple and works fine. But if want to really fine tune the sound, be sure to go into the detail set up where you have about six digital effect settings, individual speaker settings and full system configurations to play with. I am connecting through an excellent Onkyo receiver, so there is some benefit there, but recently I played a CD-ROM that displayed outstanding sound clarity and separation. This DVD player is excellent. Some of the reviews posted here that are to the contrary likely come from those with inferior system components or a really cheap tv. One weakness:Sony customer services suck, so don''t expect much from them, as well as the sales and service people at BestBuy, who do not have a clue. If you plan on buying a DVD player, take time to research throught the web, review opinions and evaluations, then make your decision based upon your current system, needs and preferences.
